I just got a warning for a filter violation I know I didn't commit on a thread I don't even think I posted on. The link in the pm that I assume was supposed to take me to the offending post does not work. I am sorry to do this on the board but I could not send a pm back to the mod who pm'd me. How can I find out what happened?

What is a filter violation?:confused3
I'm not up with all these new rules, just asking

I think a filter violation is where you try to get around the language filters.

Say television is a bad word. The DIS will filter it as *********, but you try to get around it by typing t*levision so that everyone will know what word you mean.

There is a Posting Guidelines sub-section(http://www.disboards.com/faq.php?faq=vb_faq#faq_new_faq_item) in the FAQ(http://www.disboards.com/faq.php). If you want to see where it is on this page, look up towards the top...the FAQ is between "Chat" and "Members List".

Maybe when DIS'ers get a posting-violation (meaning any of the violations that incur points), could the offending word or offending post be perhaps included in the warning?...that way the offender would know exactly what violation he or she had committed and learn from the experience.

Just my 2 cents :),

They included the offending word in my warning but I know I didn't post that. The link that I think was supposed to go to the post that contained the word didn't work.

Was the post deleted? Then the link wouldn't work...

I got a filter violation for starting a thread that was not DISappropriate. I didn't bypass any word filters by starring out a word, etc, and was surprised that it came through as a filter violation. Yes, I deserved the warning, but I was surprised for the reason given. So maybe it wasn't the actual word, but the subject matter that really gave you the infraction. Hmmm, now I'm curious what you posted. :rotfl:

A filter violation covers more than using filtered words. It also includes innuendo. I learned this from posting on a T&B thread. Now I avoid her like the plague. :teeth:

Now that we're all confessing:

Hi, I'm Luvflorida, and I got a filter violation warning last week.:sad2:

The thing is, I thought I was doing things correctly. I purposely typed a word, using just the first letter and then I used asteriks in place of the other letters. I knew the word wasn't allowed on Disboards, but I thought if I typed the actual word, then the system would automatically delete the letters and put in asteriks. I just thought I was saving the boards an extra step.:confused3

No, babydoll, you stalk me...like a moth to a flame. :rotfl:

luvflorida's situation reminds me of a question. I try not to use words on the DIS that I know aren't allowed, however, yesterday I was having a really crappy day and I almost typed something. I wouldn't have bypassed the word filter and knew that my word would have been starred out, but would I have gotten a violation for typing a word that would have been starred? I took a deep breath and typed a different word (crap, more than likely ;) ), but I was curious about exactly the situations that warrant the warning.

You don't get points for using filtered words as long as you don't alter them and just let the filter do it's job. I'm sure they don't expect us to know all the words, so it would be unfair to hand out points based on that. I think their concern is that they don't want those words to be viewed and if you attempt to type the word in a way that makes it obvious, then you have defeated the purpose of the filter.

I purposely didn't type the entire word because I figured that would get me in trouble. I didn't realize that typing the first letter and putting in asteriks would also get me in trouble, although now that I think about it, it makes sense.

I was also told to go back and replace the word with something more appropriate or my entire post would be deleted.:o

If you type in a word that is starred out, then that means that the filter did its job, and you're okay.

It's only when you put in letters of that word with * or $, etc., so others know what you would have put had there not been a filter that you are bypassing it.

So, for instance, crap & hell are allowed, therefore you see them here. (always kind of amusing when people type in cr*p or he!! - anyway, I digress) However, if those two words were in the filter they would appear as **** or **** if completely spelled out. If these two words were in the filter, and normally starred out, and someone typed in c*** or he!!, etc., then that would be considered bypassing the word filter and would warrant a warning or violation points.

The best thing to do is always spell the word out, that way if the word is filtered you're okay, and if the word is not filtered it will be spelled out.

So, are you saying that if I had typed the word, I wouldn't have gotten a warning? Or would it have been something worse than a warning?:scared1:
