Mods, please help

Look above.;)

Sorry. I must have been typing as they were posting!

Maybe I'm not understanding this. It sounds like someone could put a bunch of inappropriate words in a post, but as long as they are caught by the word filter, you're okay?:confused3

If you type in a word that is starred out, then that means that the filter did its job, and you're okay.

It's only when you put in letters of that word with * or $, etc., so others know what you would have put had there not been a filter that you are bypassing it.

So, for instance, crap & hell are allowed, therefore you see them here. (always kind of amusing when people type in cr*p or he!! - anyway, I digress) However, if those two words were in the filter they would appear as **** or **** if completely spelled out. If these two words were in the filter, and normally starred out, and someone typed in c*** or he!!, etc., then that would be considered bypassing the word filtere and would warrant a warning or violation points.

The best thing to do is always spell the word out, that way if the word is filtered you're okay, and if the word is not filtered it will be spelled out.

OK, that's what I thought, but figured that it wouldn't hurt to clarify. Everyone knows I'm all about clarification. :rotfl:

Right, because all you would see is ****, *******, *****, dick van ****, ****s, etc. (I spelled the words out)

A filter violation covers more than using filtered words. It also includes innuendo. I learned this from posting on a T&B thread. Now I avoid her like the plague. :teeth:

That really is your best option! :teeth: We should probably put that warning in the FAQ's for new members. ;)

 Lurve you Tig!

With friends like you...

And what does it say about you that you are my friend? :scared1:

And you know what, all the new people just read my first tag and are under the impression that I am a good girl. :rolleyes1

Hello, we're not blind. We see the Pinocchio underneath it.:rotfl:

I am always cautious to type in not so bood words because I am afraid the filter won't filter them out, and somebody will be offended and report me. So I guess that's all cleared up now.

You guys seriously crack me up. ;)

Yeah, on the DL boards a friend was writing expensive in her post but had a typo and she had accidentally switched the i with the s. It was all starred out and it took me a while to figure out why they would have a problem with the word expensive!!!

So maybe you typed something you didn't even know you did??

Andrea

I've messed up typing "Tag Fairy" before...couldn't figure out what I'd typed, but did a quck edit so people didn't think was doing it on purpose. :scared:

I tried to post a smilie of one smilie giving the other rabbit ears, but it turns out that there was a filtered word in the title of the smilie.

OOOHHHH you said expensive. I am gonna tell my mommy.

You know I still do not understand why anything gets edited out at all. This might be a little off topic, but I have no idea what other people will find acceptable or not. And things that I do not find acceptable as perfectly accepted? I just do not get it….and even if I did rack up a million points what’s to stop me from signing up with a new screen name? I just find it so juvenile.

I know, I know, it’s a family board, but doesn’t everyone know that? and can we not expect people to act in the same manner they do in life?:confused3

I have joked plenty about the word filtering and other DIS policies, however, I don't think that anything should fly. And they have ways of knowing if you sign up with a new screen name :3dglasses As far is acting the same that people do in real life, the other day I witnessed someone LOUDLY dropping the F bomb, in public, with a young toddler in tow. I can be as rude and crude as the next person, but quite frankly I can't trust that someone else will draw the line in a place that would even remotely be considered family friendly.

And it is true that it's hard to know what others will consider acceptable and I have certainly crossed the line before, but I'm pretty sure that most of us know what is ok and what isn't, at least for the most part. Thankfully there are mods who are doing their job, especially with the real bad stuff that I've seen on occasion. :scared:

I believe if they have a problem with someone continually logging in with different screen-names, they can block the IP subnet from accessing the website. The probem with that is that often blocks not only the offender, but also a few thousand of the offender's neighbors. Also, it doesn't preclude the offender from logging on somewhere else, say, their local library.

I do understand why they do it...I just do not think it necessary ,and in fact kind of insulting . What bothers me most is if this is what they want to do then they need to do it with everything offensive. That is nearly impossible.....To me a word I hear on television in the after noon on a soap is not offensive (but blocked here) but other words are extremely ignorant and used to personally attack and go through unnoticed. I know it cannot be a perfect system but really its just frustrating.

I just think it is silly. It is as if we are al 10 year old children, and clearly we are not.

And out of curiosity how would they know? I have many email account through many different source for home and business. I am not saying I would do this (because if I was kicked off for something I find so silly I would be pretty irked and never have the desire to come back) but how could they know all of these?

I think that they are trying to monitor other offensive behavior, but how impossible would it be to find every offensive post? And I don't know that that is their goal, anyway. I am no prude, but I have seen some stuff that has crossed so far over the line I am glad that this site is moderated, given the choice between what we have here and some other sites.

Between posting styles and ISP's, they can be pretty certain that they are dealing with the same person.
