Mobile Ordering

I have a couple of questions about mobile ordering and was wondering if you could help me out. I tried finding answers on the website but it’s very vague.

My DD 13 is going on a class trip Saturday and I was thinking Mobile Ordering would help her maximize her time. My question is: Can kids use it? The closest answer I could find was, “If you’re under 18 ask your parents permission.” Seems that would mean ‘yes’ but I assume the order would be in my name so do they ask for ID? Sure would be a lot simpler if you could add a gift card as payment. Any insight would be appreciated.

I would suspect that you would have to link a credit card on her app. Then she can just order and pick up. However if she is going to have to stay with a group of other people it might not be a benefit to her. Will she be allowed to go off on her own? Will she want to? You don't have to show id. Just show them your order in the app and she should be good.

We are in Vegas so most in her group are experienced DLR travelers. I just want her to have the option if that’s what the group decides. We’ve discussed budget so I feel confident she wouldn’t abuse my card. My concern was the card being in my name they might turn her away. It’s good to know she just has to show the order. Thank you for your response. I suspect she’ll live off of Churros and Mickey Bars so probably not an issue. :rotfl2:

Not sure how this will be received but thought I'd mention it... have you thought about getting her a credit card?

When I was 14 (decades ago!) and started taking overnight trips for school (band, choir, camps, etc) we got a credit card in my name. Parents had to co-sign and the limit was relatively low ($400). At first it was just for emergencies and unexpected expenses, but as time went on it became the main source of payment for certain things in lieu of carrying as much cash.

Obviously need to set budget expectations, and understand the importance of paying off the card at the end of the month before it accrues interest. But one advantage is when I turned 18 I had great credit, which was helpful especially since you hear stories of people into their 20s who have no established credit.

Just a thought!

Not yet. This one needs small doses of responsibility as we go, haha. When my oldest (now 22) started with school trips we added a checking account to her savings account where I kept an “emergency” $100. Of course I gave her some cash but I would just put what she needed in the account and she used the debit card. I did encourage her to start with a secured credit card from our CU at 18 and her credit now is outstanding. Like better than mine, lol. I will probably go the same route with this one and her twin brother. Not against it, just not there yet.

I took my twins a few weeks ago. They just turned 16. One of them tried to order a Dole Whip through the app and it wouldn't let her due to her age. She has her own debit card but that didn't seem to matter. It wasn't a huge thing so I didn't look into why it couldn't be done.

ETA: I don't know that you'd want to do this or if you CAN do this, but maybe she could log into the app in your name and make a purchase?

You would have to install the app and sign in under YOUR name. Then, load a credit card as a payment method. Then, she can place orders, but she will need your password because it asks for it every time you place a mobile order. Then, she will have to give them YOUR name or listen for them to call your name, as they go by what is on the app. If she is asked "what's the name on the order?" she will have to give your name.

All that to say, yes, you can do it, but based on how complicated this is for minors to do, I suspect most kids will simply be carrying cash or a giftcard to buy their food. So, not sure I'd bother.

You could also give her Disney Gift Cards and use those for payment. She won't be able to use Mobile ordering but this is an alternate method.

Yes, she’d be using it as me. The app does have the option for Touch ID but you’re right it does sound like it would be more trouble than it’s worth. I plan on sending her with a gift card and some cash no matter what. Thanks for your insight, I appreciate it.

I remember someone else asking about this a few months ago. She wanted to do this exact same thing for her son, I think. And, if I'm remembering this correctly, the outcome was the same as what you're being told here. He would have had to use her account in the app and it wasn't worth the trouble in the end. I hope your DD has a fun trip!
