I recently received a refund due to a change of plans. Our tickets were immediately voided and removed from MDE. The refund was processed just as quickly.
Right. Officially, the don't have to do anything, but Disney is usually very willing to accommodate guests with legitimate needs. If you have a good reason, they will most likely help you out, but it's not a guarantee.
Just know if they see in your account that you are currently on property and just decided you don't want to do the party they probably won't refund. Now if you aren't on property and call and say oh goodness we have to cancel our whole trip they most likely will cancel these tickets as well. It can't really be an oops I just decided I don't want to go kind of situation.
I bought tickets a few years ago and was able to exchange them for a different date when our plans changed. Then I had to exchange one ticket again because it was for a completely different date.
