Count me in on the drinking...death just brings out the best in a family, doesn't it?
My cousin Dana called me last night. She's annoyed beyond belief that our cousin Jennifer is getting Gram's porcelain birds. Dana is "settling" for the Norman Rockwell plates. In our conversation, she asked if were clearing out the entire house. Uh, no...but I did tell her that we'd gone through her clothes and donated the medical equipment and some of the books. She cut me off to shout, "Are you giving everything away?" I said no, of course not, we're still going to live there. Then she said, "So what about Gram's bedroom furniture?" I said, "I get that when I move back; I'm getting Gram's room." "What about your bedroom?" she asked (we still have my childhood bedroom furniture). I said that my mother hadn't yet decided as to what to do with that room. I wanted to say, you know, none of this stuff is mine to give away, so why are you asking me? I swear, if she came out here, she'd probably loot the place. I spent the day in a foul mood, thinking about her attitude. She never even asked me once, how was I or anything. Just immediately jumped into "what are you giving me"...
I popped open the Sam Adams tonight. No wonder Gram was an alcoholic for so many years - you need to be to deal with this family.
