Mistake in buying BCV last May?

I feel like I made a terrible mistake buying BCV last May. Now with SSR about to begin sales and it having the longer contract date I think I made a huge mistake! We haven't even used any points since we sold back our first years points for MB credit. If something were to happen and we had to sale our DVC we wouldn't get anything like what they are selling for now on the resale market with SSR about to be available with the longer contract date. I would think the resale value of the DVc resorts would plummet hugely any time now? Surely the BCV points we just bought are worth much less even now, just a couple months ago. If I would have just been patient and waited a few darn months. Can anyone make me feel any better? Please? :(

I would not worry at all. After all, there is still 39 years left on your contract, and ROFR is in full swing, keeping prices high.
I still am an advocate of 'buy where you want to stay most', regardless of the ending date.
I will be 78 years old when my contracts end.... Perhaps then I will rent some SSR points! :teeth:

What did you pay for your BCV points? Was it $74 after MB? Resales at OKW are currently going for $72, BWV around $70, and I haven't seen any resales recently at BCV, but I'd bet you could get $74 for them. Have you stayed at BCV? It's a wonderful resort, wonderful location, wonderful pool, just a great place to stay. I know you kind of wish you had bought at WLV, which I'm not sure was even available when you purchased, but I don't think you've made a mistake at all. The popularity of SSR remains to be seen, but BCV's popularity is very well established. I don't think any timeshare resort anywhere has sold as quickly. Diana

Don't worry.

I think that BCV will probably be very, very popular - certainly much more popular than SS

think about BCV is in the middle of the action - a short walk to EPcot, BW and Studio

SS is a short walk (could be long - depending upon big this place gets) to DD.

what do you think that most WDW guest would rather stay?

SS got more years added because DVC realized that it won't sell unless they do something to make it more appealing.

BCV has SALB - that is a great feature.....DVC did not have to sell BCV - it did itself.

BCV has a view of Epcot, a very nice swimming pool or parking lot - a wonderful view in my opinion. (you get to see things that WDW does not allow most people to see). SS will have a view of DD, the golf course or the hotels across the street. No exactly a great view in my opinon.

DD has a bunch of hotels - the Marriott Courtyard currently (I think) is having a sale $20.33 per room for Sun-Thursday night - see why DVC needs to made SS more saleability.

if you ever want to stay at VWL in a popular time (like the first part of December) - I am certain that you will find a VWL owner to trade points with you - BCV will be popular. I would not be surprise in a few years - that BCV will be the most popular of all the DVC resorts. Any other time VWL will probably be easy to get - much easier than BCV.

If you ever need to rent or sell your points - I don't think you will have a problem.

I didn't do an add on at BCV - but it wasn't because I didn't want too - the budget just couldn't afford it. It is a wonderful resort and I have no doubt it will prove - very, very popular in the years to come.

I don't think people will be running to SSR because of the fact that there will be 12 extra years on the contract almost 40 years from now. BC was a very popular resort before DVC built the villas and that's why BCV sold out so fast. I think that popularity will carry over to resales for BCV especially since there is no pool hopping to Stormalong Bay.

Just wait until you stay ONE time at Beach Club and then see if you still have these same feelings. My situation is very similar to yours; bought last spring, haven't gone yet. Actually, I'm more worried about wanting more points after our first visit in October and NOT being able to purchase them because Beach Club is so popular!! :) I have kids and I want to be at SAB. My wife loves being close to Epcot and MGM. I think once all the dust settles(literally), a lot (if not all) of your doubts will disappear. Good Luck to you.

Whether the extra years is meaningful is largely dependent on your age. We will be in our 80s when 2042 rolls around, another 12 years at SSR is not likely to be appealing then. Like Maistre, if we can go, we will rent points.

These contracts are not investments. They are prepaid vacations. The value is locking in a significant portion of your Disney lodging costs at current rates and converting the dollars you would have spent for a moderate hotel room to a 1 bedroom villa.

Folks have done so well in resale value so far largely because of a combination of the ROFR price support Disney exercises as well as its ability to build more resorts and raise the retail price per point as well as their ability to raise the rates on their cash reservation resorts. What will happen in the future - who knows? After five to ten years you will likely breakeven (range based on what posters have indicated). After that you are getting DVC accommodations for the price of maintenance fees.

Relax, enjoy BCV, enjoy 39 years of prepaid vacation and don't worry about things you can not change.

We bought BCV in May 2002... traded in our 1st years points for MB.... Used current year's points in Apr. 2003 with 31 pts borrowed for a wonderful week's stay... now I am planning a 15 day trip in August 2005... Being from NY, I can't get down more than every other year.. flights are too expensive, and driving was tough....

I am very glad I did it!!!

Looking at the current value... If I did my math right, including annual dues (going up 6% a year) I figured we pay about $100 or less a night... so next time you check in, glance at the guy next to you... let it sink in that he is paying around $400+ a night for a regular room, that will make you feel warm and fuzzy all over!

And by the time my 40 years are up, and i'm 80... I guess I can make my kids pay for my room...

You did the right thing!

We bought into BCV last year and stayed there this past March and LOVE IT! You can actually walk to Epcot very easily from the resort. We thought that was really cool. Then the pool was better than we had expected! It was SO much fun that we took off a day for the kids to just enjoy the pool.

I love the location of BCV. We even walked over the BW and pool hopped there in the circus pool.

The SSR doesn't appeal to me, and to be honest, I don't want a longer contract. I like the idea that my DH and I will have used it up and my kids won't have to deal with it. If they decide they want to buy into DVC it can be thier choice, but this way DH and I should (hopefully) be around long enough to take care of the life of our contract.

When we bought BCVs I had NO idea how much we would love it. It is a great resort! Really!

Hi,

You did the right thing! Do you love MGM & Epcot???? You are practially right there!! SSR is out of the way. Just start planning your trip, you'll feel better. I borrowed from next year's points to go to HH in October. I couldn't wait to go somewhere on my points. Don't worry & have fun!

My 2 cents.

We bought BCV 225 pts Feb 02, had our first stay Jun 03 - just sent the overnight for our 100 pt add on - yes BCV.

We love the area and the pool, and have no interest in SSR, I agree with Maistre Gracey - buy where you want to stay.

I own at both BCV and VWL. I like the fact that I can alternate between both locations but honestly I prefer the BCV for the EPCOT/MGM/SAB/BW closeness.

SSR might be for some but not for me. Hey I just thought of something maybe the SSR owners will be given the 180 day priority seating in addition to the extra years.

I think you're right. Your BCV points have lost alot of value. I feel really bad for you and I'd like to try and help you out. Please contact me privately and I'll buy your points so you can buy another contract at SS. :smooth:

Shan...when you and your family purchased BCV in May, I was at the lurking stage on the DIS - check my registration date:D So, to be honest, I watched and actively read all your posts, "lenshanen" was the first post I'd check for (I really don't mean to sound creepy!!) anyway, you always seemed to have the questions posted that my DH and I had "just" thought of. We were so pleased that you guys made the decision to "go for it", and you have certainly helped us in our decision to purchase...so, if you're interested in selling your BCV... :bounce: :Pinkbounc Kidding - you are going to LOVE it there, and know that you made a wonderful decision for you and yours...we're so jealous!!

Wow, first off you didn't make a mistake, we decided to buy BCV on the day we were checking out of the Beach Club last sept. It was a great vacation, the pool, the location. AWESOME. I don't care what SSR has to offer, there is nothing like going to a park in the am, coming home to a late lunch at Beaches and Cream and swimming at SAB. Then we would rest, clean up and walk over to the International Gateway and choose a country to have dinner. (Our favorite MExico) YOu can't beat that in my book!!! I will be 72 when our points expire at DVC, that is long enough for me. Even today if I added on, I would still choose BCV, I just think for my kids (DS 2, DD 4) we chose the right place.

If you feel bad, then I guess I should feel bad also since we bought into VWL in June. We also sold back our first years points, so our situation is very similar to yours. But the thing is we didn't buy into DVC as a financial investment nor are we concerned about recooping what it cost us if we had to sell. And frankly I could care less what happens after 2042 - I'll be either dead or too senile to even know what is going on. What I do know is it sure felt great last week when I called MS and made ressies for our first trip home and I didn't have to give them a credit card number for any deposit. All of a sudden taking vacations to WDW became a whole lot cheaper; because I've paid for my vacations ahead of time and as time goes by I will recover more and more of my initial cost by taking many wonderfull WDW vacations (not to mention vacations at other places thru trades, etc.). That's the way I look at it.

At this point, the response is overwhelming, the consensus is that you didn't make a mistake. I would like to associate myself with the overwhelming response.

Hello all. I do feel a little better now. Thanks. :) I'll have to show this thread to my husband cause just yesterday I was telling him I think we screwed up by not waiting and buying at SSR. I'll be 71 and he'll be 69 when the contract ends. My thinking was by that time we'd hopefully have grandkids to enjoy DVC even when we can't or might not want to. The SSR contract would just give them even longer to use it before it ran out. It just seems like you would get more for the money.
I did pay $74 per point with the MB offer. And I have stayed at BCV once before, last November. We rented points and had a fab time. It was a little cold swimming in SAB, but we had a studio with an IllumiNations view and the kids just thought that was the coolest thing in the world. I also got a kick out of looking out the window from the bed and seeing the ball all lit up. I loved the location, too. Beaches and Cream not a reason for us, one of my daughters has a severe peanut and tree nut allergy and any place with ice cream scares me to death. We stick with soft serve.
When we bought our guide also offered us VWL. My husband wanted to buy there, but BCV was still fresh in my mind and I thought SAB would make it a better purchase. We hadn't stayed at WL for 10 years so when we went to eat last week at Whispering Canyon Cafe I about had a fit. I had forgotten just how cool WL was!
Get back from our trip to AKL, start reading the posts about SSR and start panicking. Before the longer contract date was just speculation, but now it seems a definite. I was so excited to join I just didn't think hard enough about SSR's possibilities. Of course, had I waited I wouldn't have gotten December use year at BCV with the option to finance through Disney. It was all quite simple and too easy.
One thing I don't understand is so many people saying to buy where you want to stay at most. Is this a problem? Not getting into other DVC resorts other than your home, with maybe the exception of HHI during the summer? It seems most people have no problems at the 7 month window, correct? I myself booked a studio during this time frame for VWL for Christmas week. So my husband tells me not to worry about choosing BCV over VWL. We can still stay at VWL so why worry about it? But in this same thinking, if you bought at SSR you get the longer contract date, plus still get to stay at the other resorts. Any thoughts here?
Thanks everyone! I really appreciate the views. I guess I'm just wanting that definite it is all OK. LOL ;) We still want to add on, but are waiting for some extra money we are expecting, hopefully in the next few months. The question there will be add on at VWL, BCV or SSR? How long would we have to wait for VWL or BCV for points to come available or opt for SSR with longer contract date? It seems like all a mute point as we have decided on a 50 point add on. Doesn't make much of a difference does it? Can't do much with 50 points at the 11th month window. Would they keep add ones at VWL and BCV at $84 per point with the old contact ending date?
This is getting too long...anyone still out there?
By the way, JohnNJ - Very funny! Nope, our contract is not for sale, but nice try! ;)

Shan,
I wouldn't buy SSRS if they added 50 more years. The pool will be nowhere close to SAB. The location is out in the boonies. We rarely go to DD or PI. I think it will be a tough sell compared to BCV and VWL. OKW has size and space going for it. But SSRS has always appeared to be an afterthought to me- a way to make money at an otherwise unsuccessful property. They should have skipped it and proceeded with the classier Eagle Pines project. JMHO

* we must have been typing t the same time
No it is not easy at the 7 month window to get in, especially in Dec and Christmas and other holidays. Only guarantee is the 11 month home priority- esp VWL as it is the smalllest resort and BCV next. Last year when BCV was new you could get in but this year i tried to use BW points for BCV at 7 mos and it was completely booked.

Don't feel bad about your decision.

If you put your name on a waitlist for an add on at BCV and VWL-VWL is sold out and BCV may be soon-you said you were waiting so I assume you would have to go on a waitlist. They would sell you the pts for whatever the asking price was at that time, I believe and you can't use any incentive, I believe. I could be wrong.

Don't feel bad about where you bought.

Be glad you have BCV. What if a lot of the SSR people buy into SSR and want to stay at BCV-you will have the advantage by having the 11 month booking window!! I think it will only become harder to book BCV for people with other home resorts.

I will turn 71 in Dec. 2042 and 80 something in 2054. I hope by the time I'm 70 that we will be living in Florida. Will I wish that we had bought SSR if we don't? I don't know.

I'm a little concerned about the location and transportation at SSR. I guess we will have to wait and see.

You already know you didn't have any trouble booking at VWL in the 7 month window and that resort is sold out. You should continue to have good luck as long as you call at the 7 month window. I'm sure there will be more competition with SSR owners.

Don't worry:D
