Can someone explain this ride to me. I've been to epcot 3 time & I'm always scared to do it. I'm not a fan of simulators though, is it a simulator?

It uses centripetal force to mimic g-forces. It is essentially a simulator but you are spinning like in a rotor

In a way yes.

There are 4 people per vehicle. You will have a monitor before you and a joystick (does not do anything) and several buttons and switches to tinker with, again, do nothing other than light up or make a noise.

The kicker is that you are in a large centrifuge and it simulates the G force of a rocket launch. It is quite a great ride. To be honest, I have never noticed any spinning motion. If you watch your screen it will feel you are on your back and looking at the sky and then the rocket launches and you really feel the G force then. When you get into space the G force lets up and you feel like you could possibly be weightless for just a second then you get another shot of force as you head towards mars.

It is the best attraction at Epcot. On a thrill meter I give it a 6/10 for the Orange side and a 2/10 for Green side.

Lots of people make it out to be a worse ride than it is. My son was 6 when he rode it first time and just LOVED it.

My whole family enjoys this ride. I don't find anything scary about it ( unless you are claustrophobic since you are tightly enclosed in a small space. We had an adult friend with us once who had a panic attack for this reason. )
On another note, I don't do the orange side anymore because- well it makes me turn "green" :lmao:
Meaning I feel very motion sick for a long time after riding. So now I do the green side & I am completely fine. Aside from that initial amazing "weightless " feeling launch I don't find much of a difference between the two. My family is evenly split now between the orange (those who can ride without getting sick) & the green.
I would suggest you do the mild side first if you' re worried & then if you feel the more intense side won't bother you go for it - it is cool if you can stomach it.

WHAT you talking about Willis if it wasn't for my expert piloting we would have crashed.

To now add some real content. The sim spins as people have said, but it also has 2 degrees of freedom, that capsule can pitch (rotate you forward and back) and roll (rotate you left and right.)

It is a simulator ride, but not like Star Tours, Body Wars, etc. It is a centrifuge, so there is definite spinning, but with your view locked straight forward, the sensation is of acceleration (blast off) not of pure spinning. I love all kinds of rides, coasters, the 'mountains' test track, soarin, Star Tours. But spinning is not my thing. I can do Tea Cups as long as we don't spin the heck out of the cup. 6 years ago visit I did Mission Space both green and orange. Liked it and did fine, although I had a residual queasiness for the rest of the day. Last week, I did orange again. Yup, queasiness lasted all day. Sad to say, that's the last Mission Space ride for me.

Orange uses the centrifuge. Green is the same ride without the centrifuge, achieving similar, less intense affects using traditional simulator technology.

Green and Orange are the same physical ride. In fact they only had M:S orange when it opened. After having to "Dial it back" several times as people where getting sick, and at least one boy died from an undetected heart condition which was aggravated by the attraction. Disney split the simulators in to Green and Orange. Green side is the Orange experience without spinning.

I've heard there are some SLIGHT differences but having ridden both multiple times, I can not tell you what they are.

I would recommend giving Green a try, and see if you like it. Then if you do, try Orange. I normally love thrill rides, but the G forces on Orange made it so I couldn't breath! I'm not sure if it was a panic attack (I've never had one before or since), or if it was the pressure or what, but it was quite disconcerting. But I went back after and did the Green and had no trouble. And obviously it wasn't bad enough to keep me from going back! So give the easy one a try, and if you like it, go up to Orange. It seems like Orange generally has a shorter wait, so it's easy to re-ride.

I guess I'll be the first to say that I was disappointed in the ride. I rode it for the first time a couple of weeks ago. I rode the orange side because I figured it must be better because the wait was almost 3 times as long as the green side. When I got off of the ride, I remarked to my husband that I couldn't believe that people actually waited over an hour to ride that. If my family wants to ride it again, then I will, but otherwise I would be content to never ride it again. Just didn't find it that thrilling.

I actually really like this ride!

I am a little nervous about taking my 7yr old daughter on it this September. She is a thrill junkie and cries when she isn't tall enough for bigger coasters, at age four her favorite ride at wdw was TOT (we rode five times in a row!)

This is just different. I am worried she will freak out at the sensation or try to hold her breath. I'm probably worried for no reason, just unsure how she will fare on this one!

Take her on the green side then. My son loved the green side when he was that age and really got into playing his role on the team.

I would say they make it out to be a lot more intense than it actually is, every time we go we go orange and because they keep saying are you sure you want to ride orange you start to doubt yourself and I get scared I'll panic and want to get off! But when you get on it it's a little claustrophobic and when it gets going to feels like someone is sitting on you as it sucks you into your seat.
But it doesn't last long it's great I'm always glad I did it after!
Try it it's fun :)

I'm a thrill ride junkie. LOVE LOVE LOVE them. I'll even risk getting sick to ride most of them. With that said I will NEVER EVER EVER ride Mission Space: orange again. I rode it on Friday at about 1pm. I had to leave straight from the ride and go back to POR to lay down. I didn't start to feel "ok" to move around a bit until about 8pm. We headed back to Epcot for dinner and I couldn't even eat :-( I didn't completely recover until Saturday honestly

RE 7 Year old thrill junkee: she will love it green or orange. Just tell her what to expect. Like being on a roller coaster but inside a space capsule.

RE Orange side: If you are prone to motion sickness stay with Green. If you love roller coasters and G-forces then the motion won't likely bother you. An astronaut who rode it shortly after it opened said this ride is the closest thing on earth to experiencing a launch into space.

RE Green side: Go for it! The only reservation is if you are claustrophobic. The capsule is enclosed and the control panel folds down toward you making it even smaller. Think about those pictures of Mercury and Apollo capsules and you will get the idea.

I'm right the opposite of this. The green side makes me queasy and the orange side does not. However, Star Tours makes me queasy too so it must be the simulators.

I too am a thrill ride junkie who got his rear end kicked by this ride. Rode it around noon and ended up canceling an ADR for 7pm that night because of the hangover. I can do Star Tours 10x in a row and not feel this effect.

We opted out of this ride on our last trip due to sickness fear. Anyone ever take motion sickness meds before riding? Do they work for you?

I'm not particularly prone to motion sickness but broke out in a cold sweat when riding orange. When we got off, I had to lay down on the bench out front. I was woozy for a good two hours afterwards. Last trip, I tried green and still didn't care for the ride. I don't think the spinning is present with green, but there's still movement and the enclosed space that, evidently when combined, still made me uneasy.

I am highly prone to motion sickness. Green doesn't bother me. You couldn't pay me to ride orange!
