Mission: Space (or is it puke machine?)

If this ride had gone on 5 seconds longer, I would have been toast! I had the bag in my hand. DH even said he had problems. It didn't ruin our day but we were green around the gills for about another hour. I had even taken 1 dramamine. Next time, I will take 2!! And ride the tamer version!

From what I've read, there's a lot of "stuff" to do in the capsule as you're riding...pushing buttons, flipping switches, etc. For those of you that got sick, are you doing all those things? Or are you sitting back and staring at the screen?

My experience with motion rides is that I do a LOT better if I can find a focal point on the screen that, relative to me (and the other things on the screen) is fairly stationary. That, or if I can anticipate the direction of motion and look as it's changing in that direction, I do OK. Not great, but OK.

Think about it this way...some people get sick RIDING in a car, but not driving. Why? Because they are in control of the car, and they know which direction the car is (and will soon be) moving. Even through a turn, 'cause your vision pans right anticipating the direction you're steering the car. You're in control of the car, and you anticipate that movement, and you (and your brain and ear) have no surprises.

In a motion simulator, if you're looking down while moving, participating in the ride experience, and yet still moving, your brain gets messed up because the stuff you're seeing is NOT moving, yet your ear tells a different story.

So in this ride, my understanding is that you're seated at a console, with a screen in front of you. When the ride starts, I assume the centrifuge starts spinning, and the cab in which you're seated rotates 90 degrees placing you on your back. With the centrifuge spinning, and you lying on your back, you are forced down into your seat thus simulating take-off.

But what's on the screen during this? Is is like you're looking out the side window of the capsule, or are you looking out the top of the capsule? If looking out the :side: window, I can see where it may be a vomit comet! So I doubt if it's that.... Sure sounds like a lot of the problems can be alleviated but simply ignoring the switches and stuff and just focus on the screen, and continually looking for something on the screen that isn't moving, relative to you.

I'll be giving the Green a go first...and hope to be able to do the Orange!

Pushing buttons as instructed and closed my eyes too. Did not help!

Mission Space is the only ride that I have ever been on and afterwards said, "That is a ride you only need to ride once during a lifetime." I have a rather strong stomach, but I was about 2 seconds from tossing my cookies on this one when it stopped.

And a child did die after riding it, but I believe it was because he had a heart condition that the parents were unaware of prior to riding??

I think there is now a more mild version. I haven't been on it though. My experience with Mission Space was before they offered that version. But I was so put off by the ride, I doubt I will ever go near the mild version.

We just got back -- did the less intense version and had no problem. But I can see where adding spinning to the mix would be very unpleasant.

I rode orange ONE TIME. For me, it was a one time only experience. When I rode, orange was the only option. I am in the 35 and up age group and felt bad for the rest of the day. I have since rode the green version twice and think it is just as good an experince and I dont have to feel bad all day. I'm usually not one that gets sick or even dizzy on rides at all but MISSION SPACE did me in.

Go GREEN first and then decide if you can handle being in a centrifuge, if so GO ORANGE.... even though my orange experiance left me woozy.... The ride design is AMAZING.

Age 49 and rode for the first time in May! Do it! :thumbsup2

Grabbed the green card when I went in but then changed to orange. Glad I did. The G-force got me in the neck mostly. Never felt a bit unsettled or nautious. Tried to get the wife to go green but she wanted no part of it. So I rode orange twice more.

Love that ride. :goodvibes

In my experience closing my eyes is a guarantee of losing my cookies! I guess it's due to the fact that now the brain has no visual cues to correlate with the cues the inner ear is telling it.

It's no different than the Gravitron (you know, that fair ride that spins you around). If you can handle that, you are fine! It is not like the Tea Cups where you can see the world spinning. That will make any person sick!

I went two times back to back. the first time i was fine after the second time i felt dizzy for the rest of the day.

I'm a total ride junkie and have never had a problem with motion sickness or anything.....until this. While I didn't vomit, I sure felt like I could at any second. I doubt I'll ever do it again, because I really don't want to risk that happening. It's VERY intense.

I don't know what fairs you go to, but Mission:Space is about as far removed from that as it's possible to get. It's even a completely different ride system -- no comparison at all.

Yes this is exactly how I felt -- I don't think I could have handled it for much longer! I don't think it was necessarily the spinning that got to me -- it was just the intense pressure (of course, that's caused by the spinning). I didn't feel dizzy or anything -- until I got up, that is.

I am an absolute coaster junkie and will ride just about anything. With that in mind this ride did not bother me at all until my 6th consectutive ride. There were no lines so I was able to get off and walk around and get back on. My dad has not ridden it since the first time and vows to never ride it again. For me it is a can not miss!!!

+1

As I have posted before...I can withstand a lot from extreme rides and this one is right up there in ride design.

For me the orange ride was not enough! Had to go drink some hot Sake and ride it again! :faint:

Well, I still felt fine and met my Dad for RnRC. I don't think anything can make me sick.

I'm not prone to motion sickness, I love most rides. But I felt absolutely horrid immediately upon riding Mission Space. It took several days for the vertigo to subside. I would never ride it again.

I didn't get dizzy at all, that I noticed. My stomach just did flip flops and I was really naucious. I had no problem standing or walking off the ride. I just really noticed the upset stomach. I did have to skip Soarin' though. Just didn't want to risk it; I was still that iffy. BTW, I have never had a ride make me this sick.

Sorry, don't agree. They both make you feel like you are heavy and stuck to your seat. It's difficult to turn from side to side, which is not a good idea to do anyway! MS is definitely stronger, but it's a similar feeling.
