Mission: Space (or is it puke machine?)

i'd have to argue that you have to do the orange version at least once for the experience. i am prone to motion sickness, but it's an incredible experience. maybe try green first--as long as you dont have any health problems, the green version is no more jarring that star tours.

Mission Space is my favorite ride in all of WDW!

I usually get a headache from spinning rides like the Tea Cups or Tilt-A-Whirl, but Mission Space didn't give me any problem at all. The only time I rode Mission Space was back in 2003, just a few weeks after it opened, so I can't compare the orange and green versions.

Mission Space (the orange side) isn't a ride, it's an experience. It's really like no other. If you have any interest in what it might feel like to lift off in a rocket it's worth a ride.

Grandpa, in his 60's and hates spinning rides and the tea cups, rode this without any problems. Grandma rode it too. Both were very impressed.

Sorry but the Green side is just lame. It's fine for kids (I took DD on it as I don't think little kids should ride the orange side because I'm not convinced they can see well enough into the window). You can just tell by the looks on people's faces when they leave the green side versus the orange side. People leaving the green side just calmly walk out, nearly bored. People leaving the orange side are smiling and jazzed and wided eyed and talking excitedly about the experience.

I am afraid to ride either version. I get motion sickness with anything that spins, deep sea fishing, and rides like body wars and the Back to Future ride at Universal.... :scared: ......i'm feeling sick just thinking of being sick...----gag.

My dad and brother rode the ride when it was in soft openings and they were fine. Then, my mom, dad, brother, DH, and I rode it last year (the orange version) and three of us were sick! My dad said he thought it was rougher that time than when he first rode it. My mom and I don't have any problems with motion sickness -- we ride the teacups, star tours, etc. with no problems -- but this ride made both of us sick. We had to sit down on the bench for a while outside the ride and it took my mom a couple of hours to recoup. It's definitely an experience, but I have no plans to ever ride it again.

I suffer from mild motion sickness ( I wouldn't go on teacups) and found I felt very queasy for an hour or two after the orange version but felt fine after the green.

I suffer from motion sickness and stuff like Star Tours tends to make me really ill. I rode the green version a few times last year and loved it. I did not feel ill at all and the ride is very well done. Every time I wrote it, it seemed to be different from the experience of one of the posters above. I saw a few people who were in the ready room with me after getting off the ride and they all had big smiles and then we saw others (I assume coming off the orange version) who looked decidedly green and miserable.

Do you even move with the green version? Do they still sit you in the same bank of seats and you just watch, but don't move?

I did the orange version once and will never ever do it again. Even when keeping my head back and facing forward like you are supposed to, the screen you watch looked blurry to me and gave me very bad vertigo---blech.

If you can be prone to motion sickness, is the green version ok, or is this a ride to simply be avoided?

As a reference, DH and I went on Body Wars when it first came out and it ruined the next few hours for us- we dont want to have that happen again. But, if the green version is ok, we would love to try it.

Your thoughts?

The green version is soarin on steroids..

You still get tilted forwards, backwards, left and right to give you the feeling of 'falling' and 'climbing' and tilting. Kinda like star tours but a much smoother ride.. You are in the EXACT same 'capsules' that the orange are, they just arent spinning.

I suffer from motion sickness and have been on the original "Orange" Mission: SPACE ride a couple times. Both times I just felt a mild stomach ill-being, but nothing that's a big deal at all and can just be walked off. (I didn't have to stop to sit at all or anything.) It is an intense ride, but it is AWESOME!

Be sure you don't do it too close to eating, either after or before! :)

:scared: Never again! I didn't like the forward motion and sudden dips and drops and it got me really sick. And I don't get sick on any other ride anywhere! Including airplanes!

OK, I am going to be shot for this, but, albeit a very intense ride, unless you have a severe inner ear problem, physically, this isn't a puke inducing ride. Very many folks have talked themselves into sickness before they ever get on. There is no sensation of spinning at all. It feels like when you quickly accelerate your car, just more so. The action is very quick and the experience is totally unique.

I'm 60 and have ridden it many times. The G forces that you pull during liftoff are quite intense. I am overweight and I find it literally breathtaking. I have to remember to breath through my mouth during that time. That aside it is a great ride. I feel bad that people with pre-existing conditions (unknown to them) appeared to have had serious reactions to the ride, but, that was quite a while ago and might have happened on any "thrill ride".

I do understand the trepidation though because I had it before my first time on it. Up until that point I had never had a fear of any ride. Bad press kind of scared me, but, eventually I talked myself into it and am so glad I did. What a trip!

I've been warned by 3 different friends (all young, healthy people) to NOT do orange. My one friend in particular was very adamant about it - her entire day at EPCOT was ruined. She had never been sick from a ride before, and loves fast rides, etc. The others both said they got headaches and just didn't feel good for a few hours afterward.

As for me, since I have gotten sick a couple of times in the past on rides, I'm going green.

I suffer from terrible motion sickness-especially spinning. For the past several years I take Dramamine for this. I start the night before my visit to a theme park. Then another dose in the morning. I have even been able to handle the teacups.

Thanks to this drug I have been on the most intense roller coasters in the US. My question is this: If I can handle instense coasters like Kraken or Dark Knight, how would I handle Mission:Space? Opinions?

I don't agree with the person that said you have to have a "severe inner ear problem for this to be puking ride". I am very motion-sickness prone. The Carousel about does me in -- Dumbo and Aladdin's Magic Carpets I can handles once. I don't even go near the teacups - watching them makes me nauseous. I can't even ride in the backseat of a car. But I can ride all roller coasters without a problem. I rode the green side and it was fine -- it doesn't rotate but it does shake you around a bit. My oldest dd has a heart condition (blood pressure fluctuates and drops out - and she quickly follows) and braved the orange side one time - she didn't get sick but didn't feel well the rest of the day - she's gone green since.

If you're prone to get sick on rides, I'd stay with the non-rotating green side and I think you'll be fine.

That would be exactly what constitutes a "severe inner ear" problem and a pre-existing condtion.

I am prone to motion sickness but do not have any trouble with the intense version. But definately do NOT close your eyes or try to look at anything but the screen. If you do, you will feel the spinning.

I have heard many things about Mission: Space, mostly that it is awesome but has a history of making people sick. I even heard somewhere a person died after getting off?????

Is it really that intense?
The Orange Mission is, yes. I rode it once and was sick for three days afterward. Never again.

And yes, several guests who had preexisting medical conditions have died as a result of riding the attraction. Mind you, this was before they added the less intense Green Mission (which I quite enjoy). This is also why I shake my head sadly when I see posts here on the DIS saying "Oh, Disney just has the warning signs to cover themselves. The rides aren't really that intense." Glad they're not too intense for you... but the rides all affect different folks differently.

Oh, and if you did choose poorly, there are barf bags in the ride console itself. Unfortunately they're just plain white and not branded.
That's because back when they were branded they were disappearing by the truckload thanks to sticky-fingered Guests who wanted a free souvenir. Removing the branding not only solved the problem, it lowered the cost to the company.

If you can be prone to motion sickness, is the green version ok, or is this a ride to simply be avoided?
I quite enjoy the green version -- Besides, it's fun to regress to the age of 7 for a few minutes and have this amazingly cool console full of buttons and switches to play with during the flight! If you're really prone to motion sickness, take a dramamine and try the Green Mission.

It's Go-Time, Team! :thumbsup2

In February I rode on the green and I thought it was great. It is kindof like Star Tours. My hubby on the other hand, does not do well with that sort of thing, so he opted out completely. I am not brave enough to try the orange because I do get motion sick and just do not want to spoil the fun. I am going to try to get my two girls to ride the green with me when we go in September. ;)

My DD5 and I rode it for the first time a few weeks ago. When the CM asked which version we wanted to ride, my daughter said the faster one. The people in line with us were terrific. They kept telling her how brave she was and giving her all sorts of compliments. She charmed them all :goodvibes . When the ride was complete she was yelling through the exit halls how she loved the ride. A young woman approached us and offered us their fast passes should she want to ride again (thank you again:goodvibes ). Apparently she was in line behind us and had heard my daughter. So we rode the orange again:cool1: . If that is what space flight is like, sign us up. What a cool sensation. I too was a little worried (for me and DD). I do sometimes feel a bit woozy on the teacups. Although you have an odd sensation when leaving the ride, it is awsome :thumbsup2 .

NEVER AGAIN! My family talked me into it and I felt awful the rest of the day. They all loved it (including my 8 yr old neice who rode it twice in a row since we had baby swap passes. Haven't tried the green version.

Quoted for truth..

My wife gets VERY motion sick. She can't even ride the buses to the parks without Dramamine (no joke). She can ride the orange side with no problems with Dramamine..
