My good buddy Dominick will be going to Disney in November. We were talking about Mission Space which I have been lucky enough to ride several times.

Each time was alot of fun and by keeping my head against the back of the chair and staring directly at the screen I had no adverse reaction whatsoever.

Dom is subject to motion sickness and is still undecided about trying the attraction.I explained that there really is no motion,to me it was more a feeling of pressure.

Would some of you guys who have ridden please weigh in with your opinions on whether or not Dom should try Mission Space. As a footnote he has done TOT and RNR. Maybe someone could explain how they compare.

THank you for all your help!

My DW who gets motion sickness was very nervous about going on the ride. The kids kept telling her to give it a try. A BIG MISTAKE. the only saving grace was that we had not yet eaten breakfast. She felt sick for most of the morning. Now, she has never been on TOT or RNR, and probably never will go now. It is certainly possible that her nervousness about the ride helped to make the experience a bad one, but she will never be egged on to get on a ride that she is not comfortable about. The few minute ride was not worth the half day discomfort.

I do not have motion sickness & was fine with this ride, however, my SIL does get motion sickness, tried the ride on mine & my families' recommendation & she was sick for most of the day. She will probably not do it ever again. I felt terrible. :(

I guess he has to decide for himself whether he should do it or not.

I get motion sickness and went on Mission Space. I was fine except for a little queasiness right after I got off. He may want to try some Dramamine or something.

My wife suffers from motion sickness, and the first time she rode, she didn't feel well for a couple hours. She did ride again on our next trip, however, and said that as long as she keeps hers eyes straight ahead, she's fine.

The last time we rode, we rode with a woman who ended up getting sick after leaving the ride. She said she felt absolutely fine while she was staring straight ahead at the screen. Towards the end of the ride, she started glancing around the cabin, and that's when she started feeling bad.

So, if your friend does try Mission Space, make sure he keeps eyes ahead.

Best of luck!

Doug

When I rode it the first time I felt kinda weird for an hour or so after. On the next trip I thought I would give it one more try, and it had hardly any effect on me. I think nerves made the difference the first time. I would only go on it with an empty stomach, and for goodness sake DON'T LOOK AROUND THE CABIN::yes::

I ride any thrill ride, the crazier, the better (I kind of think RnRC is a little mild - but I love it) and I love rollar coasters, BUT after I get off M:S, I do feel a little weird for a while. It's almost like the feeling you get when you indulge in a few too many and try to get into bed and the room starts to go...

I'm not a fan of spinning rides and I'm not prone to motion sickness at all, but this one has left me feeling a little loopy. I should add that every time I've ridden it, I've kept me eyes GLUED to the screen, almost obsessively. I still ride it, though.

Unfortunately, it's impossible to gauge how well your friend will handle MS based on the experiences of others. Some claim to have looked all around the cabin and had no ill effects and others say a simple glance around did them in. I would say to weigh the risk vs reward. If the "thrill" of riding MS is greater than the possibilitiy of being uncomfortable or downright sick for a while afterwards, then ride. If not, I would pass on this. I have ridden and didn't have any ill effects, but since many people do, I think a 5 minute ride isn't worth a few hours of not feeling well while on vacation.

What a wonderful description :)

You would never ever ever catch me on the tea cups. Never! But Mission Space wasn't bad at all. The end of the ride while landing I felt a slight funkyness but not bad.

After the ride was over I felt like the description above but it was short lived.

Dom should take Bonine about an hour before going on Mission Space. My daughter rode TOT and RNR both with Bonine and without. She said it made a world of difference with Bonine. No headache, feeling dizzy or sick, etc. She's already asking me if I'm packing it for this trip.:earseek:

Our family all went on MS last week. First DS16 and I went to test it out. I couldn't even tell it was spinning, just felt the pressure. But even when it starts to get bad it lets up real quick. The pressure lasts what, maybe 10-15 seconds at the most and I think it happens 2 times.

After DS and I came off fine and loving it then DD14 and DH went on it with us. DH does not like spinning rides and will not ride teacups, Dumbo, etc. Me, on the other hand, I can spin like crazy and be fine but will not do Splash, ToT, RnR, anything with drops. DD was fine on the ride but DH said he couldn't wait for it to end and won't ride it again. He didn't really feel sick afterward or get a headache, he just didn't like it. But I must add he wasn't feeling tip-top shape before riding it either.

I thought the whole experience was over really fast and I wish it would have gone on longer. It really seems like such an individual thing, you just won't know until you (your friend) tries it. I think the advice of taking the motion sickness meds first is a good idea. Also we went on it the first time with an empty stomach and the 2nd time right after eating lunch and we were fine with both (except DH).

My 7 yr old rode it twice in a row! no adverse affects at all. Me, on the other hand.... It was all I could do to keep from screaming ,"GET ME OFF THIS THING". I hated that ride! I felt sick for around an hour after getting off. Not motion sickness, just wierd, weak, like my brains had been scrambled!

The story and the premise are great. It is a very well done ride. I think the fact that I can't see out of one eye just did me in. I knew it might affect me more because of that so I was extra carefull with my posture and only looked straight ahead. I can't imagine what I would have felt like if I had glanced around!

By the way, my DH wants to put one of those rides in our backyard! So, either you love it or hate it!

Have fun:teeth:

and MS is the motion of the ride. TOT is a 'free fall' or drop. Roller coasters go fast/up & down/loop. MS is a fast spin like the carnival rides where they drop the floor out from under you after getting you going fast. Some people can take one kind of motion and not another. I rode it to test it out for DH who doesn't like spinning. I can handle spinning. I also figured I could close my eyes if it got bad----WRONG. They warn you NOT to close your eyes (as well as not to look side to side, etc.). I felt queasy for a couple hours even w/dramamine (which I probably didn't take early enough before the ride). DH decided not to ride it.

Interestingly, we had dinner one night at the Biergarten at Epcot and sat at a table with a retired couple. As we discussed which rides we had ridden, I was surprised to find out they had ridden MS. When we discussed the motion, the man was surprised and a little horrified to find out that SPINNING was how they made "that pressure feeling." He said he HATES spinning but didn't know that's what was going on, so it didn't bother him! Now that he knows, he said, he won't go back on...

I guess I spoiled someone's fun :(

If buddy Dominick can handle RnR then Mission Space is a piece of cake. I handled mission space with minimal side effects afterwards but RnR terrified me, my wife said I was white as a ghost when I came off!

Regards,
Vince

I was extremely nervous about riding MS as I can't take ANY spinning without getting sick. I find I can't even do steel coasters that have loops or corkscrews. Howver, I did get my doctor to prescribe the motion sickness patch which I put on about 12 hrs. before riding and had no problems whatsover. I kept it on and rode RnRC for the first time also without any trouble. I have a few patches left and I am definitely planning to use them on my next trip.

I had very few side effects from the patch other than dry mouth, but I was drinking a lot of water as it was in the 90s when we were there. He might want to give this a try.

I ride TOT and RNR and do fine but Star tours gets me queasy. We rode Mission to Space and I followed the directions about keeping head back and looking straight ahead and did fine. I had a little headache after the first time but the second it didn't bother me at all.

Tell "Dom" to "life his life 10 seconds at a time" and that its not nearly as bad as hitting the track in his rx7 and using his NAWZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZ.. And if he has any problems he can always call Brian ..

jk.. sorry couldnt resist:)

As I'm reading this thread, I'm actually laughing out loud - look at what we put ourselves through! Even though M:S made me feel shaky and woozy, I still go on it and so many people actually take motion sickness medication (great idea) before riding. We're all really sick! :rotfl:

Hey, anything for Disney!!

That is so funny - you are right. I HATE ToT, but I continue to ride it with my DD's whenever they want to. As I'm in line I reiterate how much I hate the ride. I scream & duck through the whole thing, holding on as tight as possible, but I'm back on again if they want to go again!

Maybe it's because my DH refuses to!
