Missing School?

We do and did and continue to at the moment. My DS is going into year 4 this year and in year 3 last year we took him out for 2 weeks to go to WDW, but they were studying space so we went to the Space center and saw a launch so he did a talk about that and showed the video when he got back. But we have always taken him out of school for a week or two because often the school holiday dates don't fit with the best times for us to travel.

My parents took my sister and I out of school for 3 months when we were 10 and 11 to travel around the country. This vacation is one of my best childhood memories and neither me, nor my sister (who went on to be dux of our high school) were 'left behind'. We both went on to be successful in our studies and our chosen careers. Perhaps more importantly, today our family is a close knit unit and maybe some of these childhood travels helped cement lifelong bonds.

We took our son (now 18) out of school whenever it suited us, although from Grade 6 onwards our family decided to homeschool. My son has travelled the world and I believe is a better person for not spending the bulk of his education in a school classroom. He started University at 15 and today is a happy well adjusted young man. It certainly suited his learning style to spend time outside of a regular classroom.

We lived by the motto that 'Education is not the filling of a bucket, but the lighting of a fire'.
Take your family, spend time with them and light that fire.

Have a wonderful trip.

We didn't happen to go in K, but I did take DS out for a week in preschool, and that was definitely worth it.

Now that he's in public school, I do fewer days, and just select them carefully. - For instance, this year, he's going to miss the last 2 days before a vacation week. Less gets done then anyway, and his teacher always gives the week's assignment list on Monday anyway, so I will definitely have him do the make-up work.

Took my kindergartener out of school for a week (5 days) in December right before Winter Break so he was out 3 weeks for break. No questions asked. Got his 'report card' today and everything looks great - not behind in the least.

In Kindergarten and the younger grades alot of learning is hands on and when a child is not there they are not able to learn. If I didn't want rules of attendance for my child I would home school which is my option. Right now my dd is sick and is out of school the rest of this week.

In all actuality the schools do not have to allow a child to make up schoolwork if they are out of school for an unexcused absence and many places consider missing a week of school for Disney as unexcused. Our district gives many opportunities due to our breaks for trips and as such feel kids should be in school during the school year.

When my school district pays the peak season rates and arifare to travel during those times then they can dictate my vacation time.Until then I will take my DD out.I take responsibility for it, and so will she.DH and I are limited to times of year we can and can't travel.Besides ,There is more educational opportunites to be had in the world, other than sitting at a desk in school.
