missing children

How come I keep reading about hundreds of children that are still without parents and yet there are only 13 kids listed on the missing kids website. There are others there that have been matched but where is everyone else? Just curious where all these kids are and if they are doing everything possible to locate their parents?

I know that at least 20-30 kids as of a few days ago have been sent here to Oklahoma to an undisclosed location. They won't show pictures or give names out and for what they called "security reasons". The only think I can think of is that they may be worried that people who aren't really their parents might try and claim them.

I suppose they'll try and match parents who have come forward with details about their missing children to the kids that they have...but it sure seems like a slow way to go.

At any rate, I don't think they're making everything they know public.

Also--sadly...some children are orphans now .

I did hear of some cases where parents did choose to give up their children b/c they didn't feel they could care for them anymore .

FYI--just saw on NBC nightly news..don't know which agency it is...but 2400 missing children listed on the site and 400 or 500 cases resolved.

This same site also lists adults and they have a few thousand on there as well.

The Excel spreadsheet has 1750 names on it. It is so heart breaking. I cannot imagine being separated from my kids for so long. Let alone not knowing whether they survivied.

Trying to make sense of the numbers involved in any aspect of this is maddening. I have no idea how many evacuees are in my city, how many are in the shelters, how many kids are separated from their families, etc. And the differences in the numbers are HUGE, it's not like they are off by a couple dozen. It is very confusing.

So many of the parents do not have photos... or birth certificates. Really scary.

I didn't notice the Excel spreadsheet until you pointed it out. I only saw the pictures of about 12 kids and couldn't figure out where all the other ones were. What a very sad situation.

wow that is so sad.

ds learned to open the front door today, and I didnt know where he was for about five seconds until i ran out and saw him sitting on the bottom step. my whole world came crashing down for those five seconds, i cant even begin to imagine two weeks. im not sure i would be able to handle that at all.

On a thread on the community board a mom with an autistic child was telling how when she takes her daughter to places like amusement parks, she writes her contact information with a permanent marker on her child's arm. I think if I was ever going to ride out something like Katrina I would try to do the same thing - my dh might even get labeled! I'm not trying to make light of the situation, but what if someone was injured & couldn't communicate? Seems like a good idea to me. I can't imagine not knowing where my child is for the length of time these poor people are suffering!

I wish I could help them. I can't imagine what would happen to my nephew in that kind of circumstance.

The cheers went up here, a mother and her daughers were reunited with her sons. They became separated and were reunited through the red cross. The look on her face made my heart sing.

I can't stand it when my daugher goes to visit Grandma in the summer (and she has been doing in every year since she was born!) This, this must be perfect terror. And the children. What can you say to them?

I've been following this, too,
and my heart is literally hurting.
I cry if I think too long about it...
All I can do is pray that each child
will be reunited with their family, and soon!
Even the orphans, that whomever is left will find them.
Oh, this upsets me so much...................................
