mischief night neighbor horror- need advice

I agree with you completely. I was never raised in an area like this. If my parents had caught me doing that as a kid I would have been in BIG trouble. Like I've said earlier, it's one thing to your children to do something to your own property, your backyard etc. It's a completely different story to do it to someone else's property.

I agree with you as well. I would have been in very big trouble as a kid if my parents ever caught me tp'ing someones yard or spraying shaving cream all over the street or in peoples yards. Last night I saw something that at first appeared innocent but then really started to bother me. A Mom was trick or treating with her daughter and friends (the kids were about 13yo) and they were spraying silly string all over each other. Fine, whatever. But then, I saw them attacking each other with it in someone's driveway, leaving a mess. The mother said nothing. If my daughter ever did that, I'd make her pick up the mess and carry it to the nearest garbage pail. Why should the homeowner have to come out to this mess and pick it up? Some parents are just clueless.

Soap or your car ? oh the horror, whats next... you might have to wash it? TP all over, quick call 911 .

Calling the PD cause someone put shaving cream on your car on mischief night is how you end up with slow responses if there is a real emergency.

Soap and TP doesn't cause damage.

Wana get them back? Get a big ol bottle of Karo syrup and put a blob on their car / house door handles (bike handle bar grips or seats of the kids) that will show them you got game

shaving cream takes off the first lacquer of paint on your car. I know this because my brother had his car shaving creamed in high school and it left a permanent impression for the duration that he kept the car. I just bought a new car- not a chance I'm willing to take.

Hi. I just wanted to say that I sympathize with you. Three years ago I "had " to sell my house or rather I felt I had to because of my neighbors. I don't know who was more of the problem, the kids or the parents. I could tell stories to fill up pages of this thread. The boy took a sharp rock and carved his name among other things into my husbands expensive water skiing boat. The other kids watched him(we weren't home) and told us. When we went next door to talk to dad in front of the kid dad says " Levi did you do that to their boat?' Levi, says"no dad" dad then looks at my husband and says"Levi says he didn't do it so I guess it wasn't him". He smeared cheese all over the siding on our garage, threw rocks at the siding and put holes in it, threw watermelon rhinds in the boat, empty soda cans, threw apples at the garage doors and dented them, threw rocks at my dogs while they were in my yard tied up. Then theirs the bullying that my son who is the same age had to put up with. It was HORRIBLE. I don't condone violance and I am not one of those parents who says "not my kid". If another parent has cause to come tell me thay saw my child do something wrong then I believe them. I am ashamed to admit that I offered my son rewards if he would fight back and kick this kids butt. This kid is very small for his age and my son is bigger. He could flatten this brat in a heartbeat but Fortunately my son isn't an agressive kid and his feelngs are hurt very easy, he is not a fighter. This is terrible but I can't tell you that I feel bad about what I wanted my kid to do. Sorry for the rant. Long story short I sympathize with you soooooooooo much. Hangin their May will be here soon. It took me 10 monthes to sell my house and I don't miss it one bit. All because of a kid or should I say adult/parent.

I used to live in northern NJ, but it's been years. We used to have Mischief Night, though - some harmless pranks, some not. I didn't participate, mostly because I was shy (OK, and my parents would have killed us ). I'm curious - what town are you in?

I think the main point is that there are a lot of adults who do not teach their children to respect other people's property. I don't care if it is harmless, it is still being disrespectful. I can see by the behavior of adults regarding their children's antics in my neighborhood, where the kids get it from.

As for taking away valuable time from the police that's what they are there for.

that's really terrible. I'm so sorry that that happened to you! It's unbelievable how people can let things get so out of hand with their children...really, though, their just a representation of their parents. Again I'm so sorry for you and thank you so much for your sympathy.

Yeah, out here in the suburbs they wait till you are asleep before they vandalize your car/house.

I moved in with my DH when he lived in Lancaster City. Almost on a weekly basis someone would vandalize or try to break into our vehicles. After a year of this we retreated to the suburbs thinking that we would be safer. And let me tell you, we were dead wrong. I have had as much vandalism occur at my suburban home as we did at our city home. Last year, a few weeks before halloween, we suffered through a full week of vandalism and mayhem. Decorations were ripped out of our yard and thrown on the street, or stolen for 5 nights straight. The final night, they took a pumpkin from our neighbors porch and threw it through the back window of DH pickup truck. And this happened throughout the neighborhood always in the dead of night, so we were not targeted.

I don't think any type of vandalism is harmless. If they want to do this to their own property or to their friends, then fine. But, when it involves complete strangers, its just wrong.

Someday you and your husband will have fond memories of this period in your life. You'll have a lot of "Remember that crappy apartment" stories. Like one of the previous posters said, the cold weather should keep them quiet for awhile. In the mean time do a little research on breaking leases, usually there is always a way. It looks like you are going to be doing some traveling in the next six months (Wedding, vacation). Make sure you have adequate renters insurance and anything that you really treasure, consider storing it someplace safe. Good Luck!

My neighborhood is so wonderful that I find it hard to understand what this must be like. We watch out for one another. Are there ever problems -- few and far between. The last when a teenage girl had a big party when Dad was away (YEARS AGO!). I don't know who called the police but they called all the parents to the scene and that was the last party!

There is nothing going on the night before Halloween ... and yes we have many teenagers around! On Halloween, the neighbor kids come by ... get candy ... and my pumpkins are left untouched and my car is left untouched and no TP to be found!

When pranks are condoned by adults ... it is a terrible thing. And just plain wrong. I hope the OP can do her time and GET OUT!

Good for you calling the Police. That was UNACCEPTABLE behavior of the kids and parents. If you let it slide, then the next time it might not be 'harmless'. It'll be a bat or rocks etc. You needed to nip that action in the bud.

To the OP, I live in a great neighborhood, smack on the edge of Rego Park and Forest Hills, Queens. You get a little suburb and a whole lotta city, very, very close to the subway into midtown Manhattan. Move here! There's a two bedroom a couple of doors down that's available. The landlord is a little wacked in the head but the neighborhood is really nice!
