Looking for disers who have tried Mirena birth control. What was/is your experience with it? Still undecided and wanted opinions.

TIA!

I haven't tried it but my cousin uses it. She loves it. She got it to stop heavy menstrual bleeding. It worked for her and she no longer has any bleeding although she can "feel" when she's on her period.

That is one reason I am leaning towards doing it. Anyone have any bad side affects from using it?

I have had it for 4 1/2 years. I will have it removed on my next visit to the doctor. I have LOVED, LOVED, LOVED it!!! DH had a vasectomy last year, so I won't need it again.

It is uncomfortable to have it inserted, but nothing dramatic. For the first year or so I had very short periods, than about year 2 it turned to only spotting and has remained so to this day. I would recommend the Mirena to anyone!

I've had one in for almost 4 years now. I barely bleed. I am normally a fairly heavy bleeder, so I love that part!

I can't really remember life without it anymore (I have a short memory :lmao: ), so I'm not sure if anything else is different.

Thanks you so much for the post! I really think I will end up doing it. Did insurance pay for it? I need to call and verify with my insurance. My Dr. did say she would give me a narcotic before to lessen the discomfort. I think the insertion is what's holding me back..

I've had one for three years and love it. The first day I had really bad cramps, then I was fine. I haven't had a period since. My insurance covered it.

Don't let the insertion bother you. It was quick and easy. A couple of seconds of discomfort, a little cramping and that's it. Normal activity (I drove myself)...I have had more uncomfortable periods! Many! Though on Mirena, I barely have anything at all! I would recommend it. :thumbsup2

My advice have someone drive you home. After asking my girlfriend if she would change anything about doing it that is what she responded. The doctor said it would be harder to insert if you have never had children (which she has not) but it was not so severe that she would not do it again.
Now that she did it I keep kicking myself for not doing it. She has absolutely nothing while I still have to got through all this crap. However we paid 100% of hers and its not really a cheap thing, especially when you are only doing it so you can plan vacations more effectively.:rolleyes1

Love mine. after the first 6 months I've had very light to no period. I get a little freeked when I have one of those no period months, but when you've had one for 15 years change is different. :)

I've had one for about 3 years now & I love it. No periods except for light (and I mean light) bleeding every 6 months or so. My insurance paid for it. As far as insertion, if you have given birth, the discomfort is NOTHING!:rotfl: Sbella

I have 3 kiddos, all by C-section though and I thought having the Mirena put in was a piece of cake. Just think, it will be in there for 5 years and you'll probably stop having periods all-together. That's worth a few minutes of "uncomfortable" in my book.:thumbsup2
I have no regrets at all. I looked on a number of forums on the net before choosing to have mine put in and got kind of tired of hearing "oh, it made me gain weight so I had it removed" statements. I kinda think that's a crock. LOTS of circumstances can be responsible for women gaining weight. If your doctor recommends it for you then I would go for it.

She was in bed for days. Not kidding, but then again her usual periods were horrible for her too. But she stands by it was absolutly 100% worth it.

Sorry, didn't mean to minimize what your friend went through. I'm sure some people do have problems with the insertion. Having someone accompany you for support/driving after any procedure is probably a good idea. :)

Not a problem at all! I just felt so bad that I had let her drive herself. It I had heard that one person had needed a ride I would have taken her. I know she is the type that cannot deal with any type of pain.

I plan to get this once this baby is born. They have a demo of it in my doctors office and I've heard that the 2 little strings hang out of the cervix. I'm the sort that doesn't like ANYTHING in there, I can feel anything and it bugs me. Would I feel these strings? I know that sounds silly, but i'm so worried about it.

I was thinking of doing this too. I really need to make and appointment soon.

I have had the Mirena for almost 6 months. I am the type who can feel everything too and can't even wear tampons but I do not feel the strings. I got Mirena to help with heavy periiods and irregular bleeding. After 6 months my periods still last about 7 days but are light instead of heavy and the spotting I have the rest of the month is getting less and less. All in all I am pretty happy with it. Oh, and the insertion was not as painful as I expected. I just took some ibuprofen about an hour before. I had cramps for the first couple of days but nothing an ibuprofen couldn't take care of.
