If you believe that God hears our prayers for our pets, we could really use them about now. My 11yr old Standard Poodle, Minky, is not doing well at all. He's lethargic, weak, ataxic. He's vomiting everything he eats, not drinking well. DH is taking him to the vet now, in fact. Minky has liver disease, but he's been doing well on his new food and new medication. We left him with our groomer, who knows him well, for 10 days while we went on a cruise. He has stayed with her many times and they treat him well. This time was no different, as far as we can tell. The groomer reports that he was lively and ate well until Sunday. He vomited Sunday, but seemed to recover. They went ahead and groomed him--we let him grow out during winter to keep his joints warm, so he looked like a baby bear.
Holy Cow! when we picked him up Monday he was skin and bones
DH took him to the vet and she drew some blood. He has lost 10-lbs in the last month, that's 14% of his body weight. I can see his spine & hips and his skin is just draping from his chest. He seemed subdued, but happy to see us and interested in eating. But he vomited again. I went to work yesterday and DH reported that Minky was very clingy, trembling and off-balance most of the day, but he greeted me happily as always. Well, things have gone downhill from there. He vomited 3 times yesterday evening and he keeps falling. I had to carry him upstairs and carry him outside to the bush. I was finally able to get some cottage cheese & pumpkin into him and he kept it down.
Obviously, I am very concerned. I think he may be dying. He is definitely dehydrated. I'm at work, but I talked with the vet. I'm pretty sure she's going to want to keep him and give him some IV fluids. Probably do some more tests. I don't want to engage in any heroic measures--after all, he is very old for a big dog. I want him to be comfortable. But right now he is very anxious, shaking, depressed, lethargic, and very weak.
I think I'm losing my best buddy
