I am looking to purchase a new (2004) minivan. My favorites so far, in rank order are:
Toyota Sienna
Nissan Quest
Honda Odyssey
For anyone who has any of these, what do you like or not about them? Or, for anyone who recently purchased one, what made you choose one over another?
TIA!

I vote for the Ford Freestar, because it is the best safety rating on the market for minis.

I love my Honda Odyssey. I had two Caravans before that and was happy with them, but the Odyssey's seats are much easier to remove and it is a more comfortable drive.

The fold down back seat is awesome. I use it constantly.

A friend of ours has an Oddysey and hates it the tranny has been repaired 2 times in the last 8 months and the fold down seats no longer fold down properly. The toyota is nice but to much money for what you get same with the MPV.
Look at the Pontiac Montanna best fuel mileage of the lot and a better price out the door. Very reliable and a nice ride and good storage capacity and towing capacity if you need to.

check out the storage room behind the back seat. Some have the 3rd seat so far back there's very little room for grocery's, strollers, etc. Other's, like the Ford Windstar, have much more room back there.

I love my Honda Odyssey. We've had it 3 years and have not had any problems with it (knock on wood). I love the fold down seat in the back and love the automatic doors. The back trunk area is very deep so easy to put stuff in and take it out.

I bought a Toyota Sienna in Dec, the safety and other ratings made it something I wanted to look at. I do like it really more than I expected too.

There is lots of room in the back, the seats fold into the floor so if they are up you have a deep pocket and if they are down you have a large storage space. When I made a trip this summer I was able to put much more in the space behind the seat than would fit in my old Saturn trunk.

Really the only van I was interested in, I would have probably bought a SUV or something else instead before a different van.

::yes::

Info on the redesigned 05 Odyssey is due out any day now.
Might be worth waiting for.

I don't personally have a minivan, but BF's mom got a Sienna a couple years ago and LOVES it. I have several friends who really like their Honda Odyssey's, mainly because of the looks, the fold down seats (but the Sienna's now have that too), and the auto doors. BUT, one of my friends with the Odyssey said she kinda wishes she didn't get the auto doors. While it's convenient, she said once it starts going, you can't stop it, and her little boy's fingers almost got caught in them! She also rode with us in BF's mom's Sienna once and said she thought the ride in the Sienna was smoother.

The reason BF's mom got the Sienna was because she had a Dodge Grand Caravan that died after only 5-6 years!!! And she is someone who takes excellent car of her cars. It was constantly in the shop, and when it was on it's deathbed, she asked the mechanic what she should do, and he told her to get a Toyota, so she did!

My 98 Sienna has over 100,000 miles on it and has been the most reliable vehicle we've ever had. I will buy another when it comes time but that doesn't look like anytime soon. It also had the highest crash ratings the year we bought it according to the insurance institute.

We bought a Sienna this summer and we love it. It is so comfortable and drives really well. We were told that Toyota sent an engineer around the country to talk to people at town hall meetings and things to find out what they wanted in a van and changes that needed to be made. The results are 7 cup holders in the front seat, the center consol, the little drop down mirror that lets you look in the back seat, screens for the back windows and the middle windows roll down. check them out. I think you will be very happy. I'm not sure where you live but here you have to talk to the dealership and they can tell you how many and what kinds that they have coming in on their shipments because they can't keep them in stock.

The lease on my Honda Odyssey (a 2002) ended last month, and I replaced it with the Toyota Sienna (2004). I looked at all 3 that you are considering (plus the GMC Yukon). The Toyota was the clearly the best. Have you been to test drive them?

In addition to some of the comparisons in an earlier post, the Toyota has much better acceleration, the remote entry rear hatch, safer automatic doors (they operate more like an elevator does), the navigation system, nicer interior, the split 3rd seat, etc.

I understand that Honda is updating the next Odyssey (2005) to compete better with the Toyota. Honda told us that it would be out in the next few months. Honda may well produce the superior van in a few months but my lease was up, and I couldn't wait.

Love, love, love my Odyssey. I have never owned any non Honda vehicle and probably never will (looking for the day I can get the S2000...). I am anxiously awaiting the 2005. It may be time for an upgrade.

Wow, thanks for all of the replies! Keep 'em coming!

FIL & MIL have the Odessy. It is ok but REALLY uncomfortable in the back seats. DH rides with them frequently. We just yesterday purchased 05 Camry but came close to buying the Sienna. It is really really nice. We just don't have the need for a mini van anymore as kids are grown and we don't tote grandkids every day. If we were going van we would have gone Sienna. Great consumer report ratings too.

so I am copying my reply here, after updating the mileage and making a few other points:

I drive a 98 toyota sienna LE van. I have 140,736 miles on it.
This is a vehicle that I would highly reccommend. I would like another just like it! We bought it because of the excellent safety performance.

The new car price of the 2004/2005 Sienna IS steep though. I would not have a problem with buying one that was used (under 60,000 miles and in very good condition).

The thing I like most about it is the way it handles. It never feels top-heavy. It responds like a sedan. The reason for that is that it is built on a Camry's extended wheelbase. You always feel that you are gripping the road securely. I like the visibility factor too. The seats are in an upright position which is great for my back.

As far as repairs, It did get a new tranny last year compliments of toyota and I HAVE been very good about routine maintenance although I go to a foreign car specialist in my area rather than the dealer now. Great service, great prices, never makes a woman feel stupid.

Other than the normal things wearing just because it has hauled 4 kids around for the past 5 1/2 years, it has been a great car. The carpets are dirty but the upholstery is still perfect, not showing any wear at all. I'm gonna just keep it till it falls apart. I'm going for 200,000 miles now and my Mechanic Mark says that will be no sweat. He has always said that when I'm finished with it he will buy it!

It handles like a dream, is very comfortable to drive long distances, has a 6 cylinder engine that really kicks butt on the highway and still gets 21 MPG fully loaded with the whole family and all our luggage when we make the trek to WDW a few times a year which is 308 miles from my driveway!

I used to go through a set of tires every year until I finally put the Bridgestone Torenza LST's on it. They were much better suited to the type of driving conditions we have here in the south. The tire store I went to kept selling me these crummy other tires and told me that it was the way I was driving that was wearing them out so fast. Consequently they would sell me a new set after 14 mos. or so at a prorated price.

Finally I got smart and did a little internet research. I live in a hot climate. The tires I USED to have were rated very poorly for hot roads. They were literally MELTING off the car. It had nothing to do with me or how I drove.

The torenza LST's are rated better for a hot road surface and even though they are all season radials, they are specifically engineered for driving in the rain. These tires are now one year old and are showing absolutely NO wear whatsoever. They still look and perform like they are brand new. My gas mileage went down 1-2 MPG after we put them on but I'll gladly exchange that for a better grip on the road when it rains, which is often here, in the winter or when the road is hot, which is usually!

We've been looking into getting a minivan too, and DH likes Sienna the best. Apparently, it is the only minivan model with 4-wheel (or is it all-wheel?) drive. If this winter in the Island is going to be anything like the last one, it could be be a handy thing to have.

I had a 2000 Honda Odyssey that was a lemon. Worst car I ever had, but I realize I'm in the minority. Most people love theirs, ours just happened to be the one lemon in the bunch.

SOOOOOO glad to be rid of it! :) The poor person who bought it from the dealer I traded it to wrote me a letter to tell me what a clunker it was and asking what sort of experience I had with it. I had to be honest and tell her the truth, even though the dealer didn't! :(
