Minimum points

Question for the group. I have 118 direct points. At the time of purchase, 75 pts was the min buy in. I have the “Y” in my Apple Wallet, stating I am a blue card holder. My question is, since I don’t currently own 150 pts, am I eligible for things like member cruise, MM, other blue card holder perks? Am I grandfathered in? TIA!

Yes you are eligible since you obtained the minimum or more at the time of purchase. Some people were able to buy a resale contract and then buy a 25 point add-on and became blue card members as the requirements were much lower then.

And Disney should be glad they did…. I actually think the minimum for membership extras, if they are going to separate it out at all, should be low In that situation. 25 might be too low, but 50 seems totally reasonable. I think Disney should also offer a point washing scheme - pay us $10-20 p/p and we will turn your “resale” points into “direct points” or at least points without restrictions…

Great thoughts but doesn’t quite fit with the current strategy of making direct and resale different products.

Maybe someday we will see some of that when there are more resorts on the “restricted” list.

It’s been 7 years since they began the direct point requirement for membership extras. That won’t go down..but I think it’s at a pretty safe level to stay at it is.

There actually is no direct nor resale deed. Everyone gets the same deed and registered with your name on it.

This is just Disney’s way of trying to discourage resale since they don’t make money on them and probably cost them money in terms of work to review for ROFR and transfer paperwork. They just want you to buy it and keep it. There is no official pitch of it holding value or resale and the Mouse is probably mad people made it an entire industry though ironically it had made DVC more valuable as there is an easy exit ramp.

The last Favorite/guaranteed week point chart eliminated all weeks that were worth below 150 points. With the minimum lowered, I wonder if they would offer up more Favorite/guaranteed weeks for sale...
That is a very interesting thought. Probably would have to have a guide ask his management. So for example, week 49 (I believe this is my FW) at CCV is 118 points. If they are available, technically one would qualify for this fixed week now, where as of a few days ago they could not sell them. If I were in the market, I would push for that.

Fixed weeks sounds so good. I wish I had the money to buy a GF fixed week around Christmas! How magical would be?! But alas (no) money lol

Absolutely! The entire model right now is to distinguish contracts purchased in the resale market vs direct.

FL timeshare law prohibits any differences in using your home resort based on how you purchase. So, resale or direct, rules for using home resort have to be the same.

Beyond that, DVD can be creative and that includes trades as well as membership extras, which are incidental benefits and why those extras can’t be something covered via dues. They have to be offered as a voluntary and can’t force anyone to be part of them.

So, trades to other resorts and perks are what they have control of if they want to have resale to be something that appears inferior.

But, they do make sure that the contracts are clear about resale value and why they play a big role in what happens.

This move is really a way to try and get buyers to help slagging sales, especially when the absence of ROFR has severely lowered the resale prices.

The minimum has just been reduced to 100 pts according to DVC fan. Why would they do that and still not make them eligible for membership magic (Is that what it's called)? Do you think that will stimulate sales?

Yes, it will spark sales because it now allows someone who can’t afford, and didn’t want 150 points but wants access to RIV, and potentially future resorts, as well as to be able to trade into all other current resorts, to buy direct.

Membership extras are perks and they don’t even need to exist…it is something they add to the product but the goal is to sell the points….I know my cousins will now be buying direct because she wanted to own RIV, but didn’t need 150, and to get RIV resale, it was only good there…even though she loves RIV and will stay there most often, since this would be her only contract, she wanted some flexibility.

She doesn’t go enough to worry about perks so doesn’t care that she is not eligible .

In reality, this isn’t really much different than a resale buyer who needs to get to 150 to be eligible…just that these new buyers have a head start by getting that first 100 without having to buy resale points first!

Yes. More owners of small contracts = more competition for studios
That and more membership costs when there are more members with smaller contracts. This is the way it all went in the late 2000's. Minimum was 160 but by the time they were done there we even a couple of new members who got in with 25 pt contracts. More at 50 pts though. It got them sales but there's a cost to the overall membership that isn't borne by DVD - it's borne by the members.
