Minimum add on points

Hello,
We have been waiting for our daughter to turn 18 before buying additional points and/or an additional resort to our membership. I have a few questions though. If you "add-on", do you have to add on at a currently owned resort? We have 160 points at OKW, do we have to add on at OKW or can we add a small number of points at AKL. And if it is an "add-on", what are the minimum of points we need to buy? Lastly, will there be an issue adding our daughter's name to the "add-on" points since she is not on the original set of points that we bought?

You may add-on to any resort, min of 25 points, could be 27, 33... but at least 25. Only points owned at each resort will be available at 11 months. You can add 25 to the Poly, but can not use your OKW points at the poly until 7 months. You will need to add your daughter to you current contract, OKW, if you want both contracts to be on the same master. All name must be exactly the same on all contracts, or add-ons.

Do you want to eventually gift your daughter your dvc contract, including or specifically the Okw resort?

Or, are you specifically interested in more points, and want to add your daughter to a new point contract?

If the former, you can change the title to your contract yourself (plus a lot of legwork) for under $100/200, or pay someone to change the title for you for appx $500.

If the latter, you can buy at any resort with a 25pt minimum. Poly has the longest life, so it is ultimately the best choice of buying direct. Direct prices range from $135-170pp or thereabouts. However, your daughter would not be an owner to your original contract.

If you're looking to add on bc you want more point at Okw or akv, you can look for a resale contract (about $75-85pp right now) and put it in your daughters name, or however you want to title the new contract.

There are risks and benefits. It really depends on what you're trying to do. If you're trying to get her a card so she'll have perks, just buying 25 or so resale and dealing with the separate contract might be a great option. Adding her to yours creates risk if she has any financial issues, get's married, divorce or even just for FAFSA for college. If you decide to go just for the 25 point resale contract alone you might see if there are other family members you want to generate the same benefits for. For the right situation it might be worth the headache and hassle of doing so, for others not so much.

I just returned from a cruise today so no time to go through the entire thread but I did read through the letter and Guidebook information and didn't see a restriction based on number of points, just the purchase date. Did I miss something? IMO grandfathering was a nice touch, they certainly didn't have to. Certainly it won't get you a cruise or much for other cash type exchanges using points at that level. They could change it later, they could change it ALL later for all of us if they wanted no matter what.

I was thinking that the daughter, being a new member under the resale purchase suggestion, would not qualify for the grandfathering. Or at least not qualify for benefits once they moved out of the parents residence. The parents would be grandfathered and retain their benefits with their previous contract.

Who knows but I doubt they and/will track it by member but rather by membership. It might be that that contract won't qualify at all. An interesting option would be to buy 25 points resale do an add on of 25 retail then possibly sell the resale points. Quite a hassle for the trinkets but it should work if important.

I agree. I cannot see them doing anything other than by membership. Makes no sense at all to do it otherwise IMO.

that seems to be most people's understanding as well. I have not personally confirmed it though.

That is our assumption based on the current landscape. I suspect it'll change in the future. If that's the plan, I'd go ahead and plan the future. Maybe it's best for you to just add 25 points now to make sure you get the option or maybe it's better to wait and add a newer higher end option but more points retail. Or maybe the benefits don't justify the cost in your situation. It just depends on your plans and needs. If you decide just adding 25 is best to make sure you get the benefit, I'd go ahead and do so fairly quickly once you're a member with resale to lock in the option just in case. For those still planning or for the future, they may want to buy less points resale to take any retail purchase into account so they end up where they need to be.
