I am getting ready to rent either a mini van for standard SUV (Ford Edge or similar) for a road trip through Colorado. It will be myself and three elderly ladies. I would like input on which vehicle I should select. I am concerned about having enough room for luggage in the SUV. My aunt is concerned about being able to see well in the mini van.

Which one would you choose and why?

I would say you would be fine in either. We have a standard SUV and have never had an issue fitting luggage for 4 in it. We also used a minivan on vacation for 6 people and the lines of site were great. I think your experience would be very similar in either vehicle.

I'm not sure how old the elderly women you are referring too are, but I know a few elderly women who prefer minivans because they are a little easier to get in to due to the ground clearance so I would probably choose that. I drove a minivan for years and now I drive a standard SUV.
As far as room for luggage with only 4 people riding in either vehicle storage space shouldn't be an issue.

I would rent a mini van and try to get one that has captain chairs.

A mini van has way more room for luggage and if you get captains chairs they can recline if someone wants to take a nap.

I hate using my SUV for travel and can’t wait to buy another mini van.

My dad who has a little trouble getting around likes my Mini-Van. He can step in pretty easily without having to step up and over into a well type foot area like in an SUV or car.

When is the trip? If snow is not going to be an issue I would go with a Minivan, if it is a distinct possibility and you are not used to driving in snow I would get the SUV if it has all or 4 wheel drive.

We just rented a Ford Edge in Orlando last month. I also was deciding between that and a minivan. We had four women and we fit luggage fine. Three of us had large suitcases and one small suitcase.
It was comfortable and drove well.

If you have a Costco membership check out their rental cars page under Travel. They consistently give me the best rates. Once booked keep pricing out the same rental as prices can go down.

Sometimes the sliding doors for the second row of seats in a minivan are easier for an older person to open and close. Especially if they are power doors. If it is a standard swing door, it might be hard to get into the back seat and reach to close the door of the SUV.

I recently took my step father to and from the airport for a trip he took. I used an SUV for the trip there and he struggled a bit getting in and out of the vehicle. I used a minivan for the trip to pick him up and he was able to get in and out much, much easier. I'd go with the minivan just for ease of use.

You can also get SUVs with captains chairs in the second row. Mine has them :)

I have owned both and ridden around in both. The minivan (Dodge Grand Caravan at least) is easier to get in and out of, and the back lid is going to be easier to get stuff in and out of.

From an automotive standpoint, it's a no brainer. The minivan is far better at pretty much everything than the SUV. Don't even consider the SUV for your situation.

Mini Van for sure. Easier to get in and out of. More space than even the largest SUV's.

Another vote for the minivan! The lower deck and the automatic doors will make entering and exiting easier for everyone. We just rented one for a day to take guests up into the Colorado mountains. We had seven people and did not want to take two cars 'up the hill' as they say around here. Everyone could see very well no matter where they sat. If you are only putting four people in there then you will have plenty of room for luggage. We have no need for a minivan in regular life, but we love to rent them when we travel. Have a great trip!

I agree with PP that if snow or lots of driving through the mountains will be a factor, I'd go with the SUV. Otherwise, I'd go with the minivan.
