I've heard such good things about Bare Escentuals here on the dis. I saw my neice over Thanksgiving weekend and she is using it and says she loves it.

I ordered a sample kit from Everyday Minerals and have used it twice. It's so messy!!!!!! Both times, it got all over my shirt. I dipped my brush, tap tap tapped, swirled. What am I doing wrong?

Is it messy for everyone? Is the makeup worth the mess?:confused3

I've love this stuff and have never had a problem with the mess. You need very little in the cap. Are you using too much?

Just a thought.
:goodvibes

Sounds like you may be using too much. I tip the conainer over a time or two then unscrew the top and swirl. tap tap swirl. The BE website has a short video you can watch for technique. Hang in there-once you get it, you'll love it.

Thanks! I watched the video. I am using too much. I'll try again tomorrow!

The problem may be that you are using everyday minerals and not bare minerals but I am unsure as I never used everyday minerals. I have had no problems with mess. You put a tiny amount in the lid of the jar and swirl it into the brush then tap it off. I usually don't even bother tapping and have never gotten it on myself. What kind of brush are you using? That may also be the issue but it really sounds like you are using way too much if it is getting all over.

I also use Bare Minerals, and started my 12 YO DD on it too. Very little mess, mostly just from opening the jars if there is any on the rim, but none whatsoever on the clothing. I agree, it may be the brand that you have. If you have an ULTA around they will do a free makeover with the products and there are started kits available if it's price prohibitive for you. The starter kits can be found for under $50 here.

I had purchased the everyday minerals and had a horrible time with the "mess" . I decided to try Bare Essentials after seeing a QVC special and I LOVE it! The canister is different so it is very difficult to make a mess. I think the brushes are nicer also.

LOVE my Bare Escentuals, too! Once you see how little you really need, you'll get the hang of it. I get very little mess.

BTW, I get most of mine on QVC. They often have package deals and you get more for the money!

I got the sample kit from Everyday Minerals and my peeve is the jars are so tiny! Hard to get a decent amount on the brush to apply it.

That is also kinda the case with the Bare Escentuals (Bare Minerals) starter kit. It (BE) also comes with two shades ofr foundation, either in the fair, medium or dark family. Well, I'm fair, strawberry blonde hair, green eyes, and the two shades in the starter kit aren't perfect for me, but the shade that I bought individually is great, plus the jar is larger. I do have trouble with the fulffy brush fitting into the starter jars, but the other brush that comes with the BE starter kit provides more coverage and is easier to fit into the jar lids.

Those little EM trial jars are hard to work with. The full-size containers aren't nearly as messy. But even with the trial jars, I never had such a mess that it got on my clothing - try picking up less on the brush, so there is less to tap off!

What brushes are you using? The right brush makes all the difference. I wasn't overly impressed with the EM brushes. Get the starter kit from BE just for the brushes:$60 minus 20% off. It will last you a year plus.

I used Bare Escentuals for years and thought I loved it. I then found out there were other brands of mineral makeup out there and found others I preferred. Bare Escentauls contains Bismuth which can make you itch (especially if you get hot) and also makes your face shiny. I prefer brands without the Bismuth. Currently I am using Pure Luxe and absolutely love it. If you try several of her samples and find that you have to mix shades to find your perfect match, she will custom mix shades for you at no extra charge (I personally wear a mix of 20% Buff and 80% Fawn Beige and she just sent me a 5 gr jar of Buff to lighten my big jar for the winter). She's great! I have also ordered samples from Meow and The She Space. Both are very good, but Meow is a little too drying for my dry skin. I'm also getting ready to order some samples from Fyrinnae. Usually samples are very inexpensive and a good way to try mineral makeup, until you find the brand that works for you. I know Pure Luxe samples are only like $1.00 and have quite a bit in those little jars. Meow samples are $1.00 and The She Space samples are only fifty cents, but come in baggies, which I don't particularly like. You might want to read reviews about them on Makeupalley.com or makeuptalk.com. There are a lot of other brands out there too. I know Milan, Lumiere, Monave, Cory, Taylormade, and Silk Naturals also get good reviews, but haven't tried them, yet. I will never go back to liquid makeup, not will I ever use BE foundation again. There are too many other good mineral makeup companies out there that are better and cheaper. Unfortunately Everyday Minerals is one that also frequently gets bad reviews.

As someone else mentioned make sure you have good brushes designed for mineral makeup. They, along with a very light application are the keys to your mineral makeup looking good and staying on all day. The other thing to make sure your mineral makeup stays put, is to always use a primer (both a face primer and an eyeshadow primer) and then use a finishing powder on your face. I use Pure Luxe's powder eraser as a face primer and then apply another coat of powder eraser on top of my foundation, along with a very light coat of their Translucent Matte and April's Mix over that. I also use Urban Decay's eye primer potion for an eyeshadow primer. There are alot of eye gel drops out there that you mix with a minute amount of mineral eyeshadow and they make an eyeliner that won't come off. I currently use BE Weathereverything drops, but also have a sample of Pure Luxe's eyeliner drops too, that I haven't had a chance to use yet. My makeup looks natural (but better) and stays on until I take it off. Mineral makeup take a little practice getting used to and because it's loose minerals can be a little messy, if using jars with small lids. If using a small jar you might want to place a handtowel on your vanity and then use a small square of waxed paper to sprinkle just a little of your minerals onto. Remember, with minerals though to use just a very, very small amount. If you use any more than that you will have a mess and your face will look very powdery.

Anyway, my long winded point is to make sure you have good brushes desighed for mineral makeup and then to sample, sample, sample from alot of different companies until you find what works for you. Mineral makeup feels so much better on your skin and is sooo much better for your skin, but it may take awhile to find what works for you. Again avoid products with Bismuth in them.

I am trying the Pure Luxe as well- the only problem I have is looking at the mineral "particles" floating in the air around my face and wondering if I'm damaging my lungs by inhaling all those particles. I am also having a problem getting the right color of blush. I am very fair skinned but the blush seems to just blend in and not really add much color. The Pure Luxe samples are very inexpensive though so I'm just going to keep trying til I find the right color choice. For anyone who likes BE, QVC is having several 2 hour presentations this Thurs. Dec. 6th which makes me think BE will probably be their "Today's Special Value". You can order on their website too if you don't have time to watch the presentations...and don't forget to go through Ebates for a 3% rebate on anything purchased at QVC.---Kathy

My guess is that it's making such a mess because you are using the samples, the lids are just too small to have enough room to swirl and tap. I had the same problem until I got the full sized (or you can get an empty container) and also until I got the hang of it. I tend to get a few sprinkles when I open a jar that's been dumped upside down, but I put makeup on over the sink and it's easy to rinse out. I used to put my makeup on before my shirt, but don't really have the problem anymore. Oh and I use everyday minerals, and love it! They have great products, great prices adn wonderful customer service. I can't see myself ever switching makeup brands!

If your using the Everyday minerals samples you may find it easier to pour a small amount into something else. Those tiny containers are way to small to use properly. I have a tiny glass bowl I used with mine and it made it much easier.

I've had to stop using my mineral make up though for the winter. I was loving it all summer long (never felt melty or cakey on my skin), but as soon as the dry cold weather started it was looking horrible on me. I've switched back to my Laura Mercier liquid for the winter and my skin looks much better. I'll just have to wait for the nice weather to start again to use it.

I'm not sure why Everyday Minerals gets a bad review. I have it and love it. Been using it for about 6 months--I started with the sampler set, liked it and ordered a few things. It IS messy--those sample jars are too small for a brush and they don't have a 'shaker' like the big jars do. I just placed an order because I needed some new stuff (DD13 likes it too!) and got the mixing jar for $2 (and another free sampler pack--you can order one each time you order) so I will pour those samplers in there and then can shake a small amt. into the lid. Also, I got a kabuki brush that I just love. It is very good quality and doesn't shed like some brushes do. I don't really wear much make-up and don't like to spend a lot on it. The EM is great for me. You can't beat the price either. I got the set for $32 and you can get whatever you want--brushes, powders, etc. It's a good deal.

Those little EM trial jars are hard to work with. The full-size containers aren't nearly as messy. But even with the trial jars, I never had such a mess that it got on my clothing - try picking up less on the brush, so there is less to tap off!

Same here - I have a bunch of the sample containers. I ordered them so that I could find the perfect shade. Once I found the right shades/formulations I ordered the full size with the sifter lid. I have also just recently tried Pure Luxe mineral makeup. Wow - another great find thanks to the DIS! You do have to pay for the samples, around $1 each. For the difference in price between BE and Everyday Minerals/Pure Luxe, I am addicted to Everyday Minerals foundations, and the Pure Luxe "eraser", blushes, and eyeshadows.

Like the other posters have said, just try a lighter hand. You knock most of the product off by tapping the brush onto the container and it will fall back down into the jar. Otherwise, choose a lid from a different container just to use for "swirling", pick up the product on the brush from the product container, tap off, and swirl in the separate lid. Make sense? Also, you might want to use a little bit of extra moisturizer so that the minerals will have something to stick to. Good luck!

Oh - just remembered - if you order from EM again, get one of those flocked sponges. I much prefer to use those instead of a brush for applying foundations - makes your pores disappear! And I notice less mess with the sponges versus brushes.

I was at Target today and noticed that most of the regular brands- Almay, Sonia Kashuk ( which I like), etc. have mineral makeup choices. Some came in a dispenser and some were presented in jars. Has anyone tried an "off the shelf" product and liked it? Of course it was much less costly. Sonia Kashuk, which also had a 10% off this week came with a jar of mineral foundation and a jar of mineral blush, plus concealer for $13.99. I'm not sure how many ounces, but they are quite large. I have a feeling it's going to be difficult to discern which products are best ( other than trying them) as mineral makeup becomes more popular and moves to more common vs. specialty brands.---Kathy
