Does anyone know if you can get a military discount at one of the regular resorts if you haven't tried to get Shades of Green first? My in-laws are military and during our next trip we'd all like to stay at the Contemporary. They don't want to stay at Shades of Green.

I don't think normally. There is the military discount offer mentioned on mousesavers.com but I'm not sure if that extends to more than active duty.

Otherwise SOG will give you an overflow rate if they are booked for the dates you are looking for. I will tell you that last time I checked the AP rate was cheaper than the overflow rates for SOG.

If you don't mind me being nosy, why wouldn't they want to stay at Sog? If your in-laws are active duty then they can get the 40% off at disney resorts if retired there not entitled.

First let me say thank you to Landmark for the info.

Now on to Caseywirth's question. We all went to Disney about 1 1/2 years ago. That was when the SOG was temporarily in the North Wing and my in-laws were lucky enough to get a room there through SOG. It was a wonderful trip and they fell in love with the Contemporary. So now they don't have the desire to stay anywhere else. Plus the transportation at the Contemporary is much better than SoG. Unfortunately my father-in-law is retired military so looks like they either shell out big bucks or they just have to settle for the SOG.

When are you going? If it's during a normally sold-out time for SOG, you could play Reservation Russian Roulette....

Don't make any reservations yet. Keep calling on availability at SOG. When they don't have your dates available, ask for overflow at CR :)

Worst case....SOG won't fill and you'll stay there....but at least doing it like I say above, you'll have a shot at overflow. They won't give you overflow if you have rooms reserved already at SOG.

FYI...many dates in October and most of December are sold out for this year.....

Not sure if this is useful to you or not.

As of right now there is a active duty military dicount code on www.mousesavers.com good through 29 September 2004. I just booked 3 nights at Pop Century for $51.20 per night, tax included.

The code is EVU and you can book by calling your Disney TA or calling 407-WDisney.

Thank you again everyone for the information. I think we will try playing Reservation Russian Roulette :teeth: . I think the biggest fear we have is that we'll get shut out of the Contemporary altogether. It usually books up early. But maybe we'll make reservations now for the Contemp and then we can always cancel them later if everything works out. If worse comes to worse we'll end up paying a higher rate. Thanks.

We have stayed at SOG in the past, before the renovations & we would definitely stay there again. I had thought that once the renovations were done that they would not do overflow rates. If they were booked, you were out of luck.

We currently have reservations at Pop Century in November at a $61.60 rate. Does anyone know the overflow rate for Pop, or does it depend on your rank?

Thanks.

Overflow does not depend on rank. It is a pre-negotiated rate with Disney that SOG can only offer when they are completely sold out for your dates. They only get so many rooms per resort, so they may not be able to offer you your choice of resort. For instance, our dates in October are sold out at SOG. We wanted overflow at AKL, but they weren't available. So we're at POFQ for now, because I think the AP/FL res rate (when/if it comes out) will beat the overflow rate I was quoted at WL.

I don't know the rate for POP, but I *do* know that the overflow rate isn't always better. For instance, when we went in December, the FL res and AP rates were better than the SOG overflow rate. So be sure to check all discounts you're eligible for ::yes::

Just FYI -- You can book SOG rooms online at their site now (Or check for availability). You can't book overflow rates online, but you can e-mail them for overflow rates IF there is no availability for the dates you want. I e-mailed them a week ago for overflow rates for October (SOG was sold-out), and I have yet to hear from them - so you may be better-off calling them for Overflow rates. Jill

They must be inconsistant. I emailed my request Sunday night and got a call-back Monday afternoon. I was IMPRESSED since the hold times on the phone can be so long. I was actually hoping for an email, but a call works, too, I guess.

I understand how your inlaws feel. DH and I went over to the SOG about two years ago to check the place out and to us it just felt military. I'm in the Air Force so I'm around "military" all day (I'm very proud to be in the Air Force) but, the last thing we want to be on vacation is militant :) I too would opt to play Reservation Russian Roulette. The prices at the SOG are great but, I think the Disney atmosphere sucks you in good.

On a side note we are doing the Dream Maker Silver 7 for 5 deal in August. We added two nights in front of our package and one night after our package ends just to take in one last breath of Disney until January, and was able to get the EVU discount at the Caribbean Beach for $86.40 per night. It beat out the AAA discount of $136 per night we had orginally booked.

I requested an overflow rate online (after my dates in Oct were unavailable) and got one just a few days later. $89 a night at POFQ. Not bad!

Please don't take this the wrong way, but what do you mean SOG felt military? It's not like there are military people in uniform hanging around and the hotel is a deluxe resort. Maybe I'm just partial to SOG, but I think it's a beautiful resort especially now. There is nothing to make you even think this is a MWR resort except it being tax free. If you have never stayed there maybe you should I think you would be very pleasantly surprised!

I stayed at SoG a few years ago, and while I didn't necessarily feel that it felt "military", it didn't give me that Disney "feel" that I get from a WDW resort. It is a beautiful resort, no doubt about it, but when I can get a mod for the same price or less, as we're doing this year, I'll take the WDW resort every time.

JMO.

In response to the two above post. I'm not offended at all.

To us the SOG reminds DH and I of lodging on every military installation we've ever been on. When DH was in the military, he worked at lodging and knows what they look like, smell like & feel like the whole kitten caboodle. I'm still in the AF and travel quite a bit and sometimes have to stay at a military installation. The rooms have no frills even thought they are very nice rooms, they just don't excite us. To us rooms at the SOG mirror what military installation rooms look like. Not saying it a bad thing. It's just our preference not to stay at the SOG because of that. That's what I mean by it feels military to us. Again yes the price is great but we would prefer to stay at one of the Disney resorts that has a more Disney feel to it while we are on vacation there.
