Are you doing anything to try to avoid mumps? My coworker leaves for Chicago today. He isn't sure if he had them or not. I told him to wash his hands like crazy and to NOT bring it here!

Ok, there have been about 1100 cases of mumps in the midwest and there are well over 20,000,000 people in the midwest, the chances of getting them are very slim. They are trying to link the cases either to a defective batch of vaccine or something along those lines. Chances are your friend has been vaccinated and is resistant. Have him do a titer test at the dr's office is he is really worried.

no, not a thing everyone in my house is vaccinated. If your friend is vaccinated he has nothing to worry about.

They may be saying on the news thats it's spreading like wildfire - but (knock on wood) I know no one who has it - or knows anyone who has it.

He'll be fine! :thumbsup2

Thanks. He leaves today. Thought I read that most who have been infected DID get the vaccine, but it's only effective in about 90% of people, I think. He's of the age that he probably DID have them. ALso read that people born in 1968/1969 could have gotten a "bad batch"...I was born in 68.

Every vaccine has it's limitations. Not all vaccines are effective for all people. My SIL found out while she was pregnant with her first that she wasn't immune to measles even though she had the shots (they did a titer test, she didn't get them). She was vaccinated again and a year later they did another titer and she had immunity. If you are worried your doctor will give you a booster.

Unfortunately, I cannot get live vaccines due to meds I'm on.

Well, now it's in PA apparently:

The Centers for Disease Control is calling it the worst outbreak in 20 years. Cases of mumps have been reported in at least 9 states and the list now includes Pennsylvania.

GOlfgal, did they give your SIL the vaccine WHILE she was pregnant? I thought you couldn't get live vaccines while preg.

No, she got it after she was pregnant and done nursing her DD. The tricky part was that she was a school teacher and this was about the time where a lot of college students were coming down with measles. She was fine though.

You can still have your dr test you for immunity, it is just a simple blood test, that way you will know if you are immune or not especially since you can't have a vaccine.

Oh, good.

Yes, I'd think about it if it spreads this far East. I commute to NYC and I think my bus is a large Petri dish! lol

Just an FYI: I read (but not sure if it's true) that you CAN get it more than once if not all the glands were infected the first time. I'll see if I can find more info on it.

Not doing anything differently. What can we do? Stay at home? We even traveled to the heart of it (Iowa) for my grandma's funeral a few weeks ago. We are all fine.

Not really. I am going to ask DS's Dr if he will be at high risk, he's only 2. I have had both shots and DH has too. There was a big outbreak when I was in high school and I got the booster then.
One of our student's mom has them. No one seems worried here.

We have 6 reported cases in our town so far. One is in their 20's. 2 others are in school, one at an elementary and one is at the high school. Our newspaper reported that all 6 have either had the mumps already, or had the vaccinations.
Our town even made the news since they were suspending, 12 days for each infected student, any kids who hadn't been vaccinated if someone in their school came down with the mumps. Some parents fought it and won last night.
The KU campus seems to be hit the hardest. We are getting ready to go to Lawrence this morning too. :worried:
