Our plans have changed a little for our up coming trip in October. Now we want to leave after work on Thursday and drive from Atlanta. It's about an 8 hour drive so should put us checking in about 2:00 am on Friday. I think I remember last year when I made reservations that a CM told me we could check in any time after midnight and not be charged. But I'm not 100% about this though.
Anyone ever had a middle of the night check in??

You should be okay if you arrive at 2am.
Latest I've ever checked in was about then, 2 - 2:30.

As long as you get there before they roll the system over to the new day (typically, that happens at around 4 am), then you should be fine.

If you hit a problem on the way down and won't make it by then, try to keep the resort's direct phone number with you and call it to let the person who is taking messages know that you are still coming in. In most cases, you will be talking to an answering service/switchboard operator who isn't actually at the resort you are calling, but they can at least document your call.

If you check in at around 2:00am you WILL be charged for that night. The new day starts around 6:00am so anything before that is the previous day.

We checked in at 1am ( was now Saturday), and had to have a reservation for Friday night in order to check in. Is that what you wanted to know?

Yep. They will have saved a room for you since checkin time the calendar day before.

It seems like a waste of money while booking, but when you wake in the morning and you are in YOUR room without the need to move or be "homeless" until you get your real room, it is WELL worth it.

Don't understand what the CM would have been thinking to say midnight. Being in the hotel business, I can tell you that we don't sell days we actually sell nights. The night's sleep is really what people need rooms for. And because of that the hotel day really runs from about 6:00 am to 6:00 am (time depends on hotel). So you will need to have a reservation for the Thursday and you will be charged for that night.

To check in at 2 am you would need a reservation for Thursday night. We flew down on a Thursday night in February and arrived at CSR at 1am, so really Friday morning, but needed a reservation for Thursday night to check in. I believe 6am is the earliest you can check in.

I have checked in often as late as 3:30 am and been charged!! You have to check in very late (certainly after 5:00 and probably after 6:00 as PP have said) in order to not be charged. Likely, if you did check in at 6:00 am your room would NOT be ready for several hours. It is better to have the room and be charged and have the sleep, in my experience. (The one time that i didn't get charged because we arrived so late, we didn't sleep. We basically lost the whole day due to being so tired.)

As pp's have said, if your current reservation starts on Friday, you will need to add Thursday night if that's when you will be arriving. Arriving at 2 am is technically Friday, but is still Thursday night as far as a reservation is concerned. The computers don't roll over until 6 am, so at 2 am they are still on Thursday arrivals.

:thumbsup2 This is correct :thumbsup2
We regularly arrive after midnight and have to have a reservation for that night to be able to check-in.
