Booked with Southwest and just realized that my fiance's middle initial is on his driver's license but not on the reservation I made  I haven't had a chance to call the airline yet, but wanted to find out if anyone knew what the airline would do or if anything would need to be done at all? Thanks!

Relax. They won't care about the middle initial. I think Southwest drops it off their tickets/boarding passes.

You don't fly much do you.

I'm sorry to sound patronizing. I had all those same types of concerns at one stage of this game.

Then I lost my wallet and not only did Delta let me onto the plane without ID, the TSA let me through security. I think I even got a free alcoholic bevrage on the plane. All the while my wallet, drivers license, passport and even my tickets were in the back seat of a NY cab.

They don't care. They got paid to put a body in that seat and you give them a body to put there.

Caveats:
Do you look Muslim-y; Or have a Muslim-y name? (This includes anything Turkic, Persian, Arabic, Indus, Native American, African... I'll just say etc.)

I have it on good authority from my friend Rajish that such a condition can have a limiting effect. That's sad really. I'm a globalist and appreciate a cosmopolitan world.

In any event, if you have an anglo last name and a winning complexion that extra letter on the passport won't make a bit of difference.

What airport is this? I wouldn't want to fly using that airport!

Actually, I fly frequently for work but always make sure my name is correct so I've never run into this issue. FWIW, I am Native American and my fiance has full sleeves of tattoos. So much for that ;)

I'm betting you have. It's a little out of the way airfield called o'hare. This specific flight would have been 2006 maybe. A few years before the body scanners went up.

That said, I have been waved through with just my ticket looked at probably dozens of times at o'hare, Detroit, Dulles. Not at security of course. But at security they look at your ID real close and make a quick look at your boarding pass if at all. At the gate I would say its almost the exception to have my ID looked at more than a passing glimpse, if at all.

Nope, Have not been through any of those 3 airports and now I will make sure my plans never go through them either. Thanks for the info.:thumbsup2

I don't understand what you are reacting to. ALL airports domestically have a way of dealing with people who have forgotten their IDs. You can read about it on the TSA website.

Ad I've never had anyone peer at my ID; they look at face and name and my face and that's it. What else do you want them to do?

Only time I've had more interaction is when DS had a brand new passport and wanted to brig it ad show it (though it was a domestic flight and he's definitely a minor) and they notice I hadn't signed it for him. Most helpful of them.

Op the middle initial thing should be OK. DH's travel agency for work had him listed in a very weird way for two years so his boarding passes were very odd but it has always been fine even internationally.

Here's the info from the annoying TSA site (so you don't have to torture yourself with it):

"We understand passengers occasionally arrive at the airport without an ID, due to lost items or inadvertently leaving them at home. Not having an ID, does not necessarily mean a passenger won't be allowed to fly. If passengers are willing to provide additional information, we have other means of substantiating someone's identity, like using publicly available databases.

"Passengers who are cleared through this process may be subject to additional screening. Passengers whose identity cannot be verified by TSA may not be allowed to enter the screening checkpoint or onto an airplane."

I have flown at least 20 times and have a middle initial on my ID but never on my plane ticket. I never even thought about it. You should be fine. Enjoy

Same here except it was my passport I forgot to sign. The guy with the black light looking at my passport gave me a pin, I signed it and went on. This was at DTW.

I have to vouch for cobright here. I had my wallet stolen (with my passport and my ids) and flew out of O'Hare to Jackson, MS with nothing but a photocopy of the ID page of my passport. cobright was at home keeping our children at the time.

Why not? Do you really believe that ID matches with boarding passes make you safer?

The problem is the TSA letting him into an airport past security with no ID.

I mean what are they there for, If it's not important, lets let everyone walk up to the gates and board?

I once packed my drivers license in my suitcase. (I know--not smart!). They accepted my health insurance card as ID.

It doesnt matter that the middle initial is not on his ticket. Your friend will be fine.

Why the heck is that a problem? The purpose of Airport Security Screeners is not to see whether people have ID. It is to screen them and assure that they do not board a commercial aircraft with weapons, explosives, or incendiaries. If the Airport Security Screeners perform that task well, what does ID matter? :confused3

Does a nut case on the no fly list have to have a weapon on a plane to over take it? and cause alot of trouble on a plane for passengers and the crew?

The answer is simple.....NO.

When a crew member comes out of the **** pit for a problem in the back of the plane. Anything can happen, think about it?

Debate all you want, but passengers should have the proper ID before boarding a plane or even to be allowed past secruity at a airport for that matter.

ID requirements aside.... did the DISboard filter just blank out the word for the front of the airplane?

Did you read my post? The one with the info from the TSA on what is needed if you have lost your id before a flight? They don't just wave you through; there is a procedure involved.

My comment or reaction is from cobright post, and the experience at the airports he traveled through.

I'm not disagreeing what the correct procedure is that you are posting.

Did you not read my posts and who they were directed to?

There is not a more stringent process. They looked at me, looked at my copy paper copy, looked at me and said thank you. The guy initialed my boarding pass and waived me on.
