Thanks LJ. Those are cool. I can’t find links for my bowls, even though they aren’t old. I know for a
fact they’re still available at
Walmart. But I took pix so I’ll attach them.
The saucer/bread plate is for scale (and is a 25+ y.o. pattern called Fiesta Chilis, iirc. It’s
long retired) The white bowl holds 12 oz filled to just below the rim— which ironically is only about 2 oz less than a standard Corelle ware bowl… but it *
looks* a lot smaller.
When I started thinking of handles— it made me think of my favorite soup mug (sometimes used for tea too). I haven’t checked, but I’m pretty sure its capacity is probably also ~12 oz. That’s the
shiny black mug.
The
red mug is larger, but it’s what *
I* would use for Cream of Wheat or Cream of Rice (my favorite, with butter and honey or cinnamon sugar like you have on toast— yum yum

) or even oatmeal, if I were making it in the microwave, because I make my hot cereals with milk, and if the sides of the dish are too low or not steep enough, then it WILL boil over. So I also put a plate underneath.)
I got both of these mugs at the dollar store. The red one from
DollarTree, and the black one from the
99¢ Only store.
[please forgive the background in my image, lol.]

And one last one with everything just for scale.
I should say, I always put a plate or saucer under things in the microwave, not only to protect from boil overs, but also because the plate underneath doesn’t usually get hot (unless there’s boil over that cooks there for a while).
Getting yourself a good heat resistant glove will really help you. (like OveGlove, except, I like the grill ones better…. the original OveGlove sucks, because once you wash it, it looses its functionality.

)
A glove makes it easier to grab things in the oven or microwave with a more natural grip, so I find it to be safer. (At least for me, because I have diminished fine motor control in my hands due to MS.) YMMV.
Now, I’m off to search new Corelle & Corningware that I haven’t seen before.

Down the rabbit hole I gooooo….
