Microsoft Surface Pro 3 for Photographers

I've been drooling over this new laptop replacement since it came out and wanted to see if anyone is currently using it for their photography needs and if so how's its working out? Really intrigued that it can run PS and LR and had the touch capabilities. Its a little on the pricey side but hopefully in a few months the prices drops down a little so I can snag one.

Well the people have spoken . . . .

This just makes me want one even that much more. My wife is the only road block that I have now. She just doesn't see the value of spending that much money.

I'm considering going that route. I'm teaching now and getting an interactive whiteboard for my room. That sounds like as good a reason as any to get one, right?

So can it run PS and LR at the same time? And have you tried it with any plugins? Does it get sluggish processing RAW? I'm looking for a real world performance evaluation, not the controlled professional reviews I see online.

My biggest issues is the screen size is still pretty small.

Remember, it's a PC. The one I have is a Core 5 simulating 4 cores with 8G. It'll hang with any desktop similarly equipped and IMO, maybe even a little faster. It's a helluva machine but you have to recognize it for exactly what it is: a tablet that can function for short periods as a laptop.

It's not a desktop with a 23" screen (unless you add the docking station) and it's not intended to be.

In the interest of full disclosure, it's not my primary or even my secondary. It's my "go to" on the job/on the road machine. I do network security and data center management for a living. I have a lot of machines. Could I use it for anything I do? Absolutely. Do I? Absolutely not.

The size is part of the attraction for me. I got tired of hauling the 17" laptop around and passed it on to my son. Right now I'm using an iPad with a bluetooth keyboard and while that's great for word processing, checking email and running presentations it's just not doing everything I would like. What I really want at this point in time is laptop power in a tablet format. Something I can plug into the projector and use the same software my students are using on the desktops in my room so I can demo that way. But something that's still small enough to tuck into my bag when I go home at night and not feel like I'm hauling around a full tower computer with me.

I have multiple desktops at home and in my class room so this would be an auxiliary device for me as well.

Having read that, I find it hard to believe that you would be disappointed in a Surface 3. It is taylor-made for exactly the situation you have described. With a "type" keyboard, your future awaits you.
