I was just reading DVC Mike's trip report/updates and he was at DHS and taking pictures. Does anyone else wish that they would dump that hat like they did the wand above the Epcot ball. I remember in the early days of DHS and when you walked in the gates, there was the Great Movie ride building to greet you in all its glory. Then at Christmas time, they would put the Christmas tree where the hat is instead of outside the park where it goes now. Just pondering!

Personally I love the hat!!!

I like it as well, my problem is how it is used. As my DD said upon first learning that it was a hat store underneath, "That's kinda lame Dad, I thought it would be something cool."

Yes, yes, yes. I wish they would do away with the hat (BAH).

I remember how lovely it was with the Chinese Theater as the focal point as you strolled along Hollywood Blvd. Sooo much nicer than having the Mickey's Sorcerer hat as a focal point! (IMO) :)

The problem arose with some type of copyright issues with the Chinese Theater. I can't remember all the specifics but they way I understood it was that Disney HAD to build the hat to "cover up" the theater. The Photopass photographers are strategically placed so that you cannot see the theater facade in any of the pictures......all you see is the hat. There is also some speculation that DHS (MGM) did not have a "weenie" or an icon so the hat fulfilled that role, but the real root of the issue was the whole copyright thing.

I love the hat, because to me, it represents movies in a way, and in a sense, one of Mickey's "biggest roles". When I see the hat, I think of Mickey Mouse. However, I agree that I'm not fond of how it's used.

I love the hat too! It definitely gave me some nice pictures.

I like that hat, however I wish they would put it elsewhere, so that it isn't in the way of the Great Movie Ride.

It's a BIG hat. Who knows the approximate size?

I find it odd that something like this wasn't ironed out PRIOR to building the Chinese Theater. Disney, if anyone else, should have their finger on issues like this.

According to "Yesterland.com", the whole "they had to hide it due to copyright" is just an urban legend. But they don't have a definitive answer either as to why it was erected there in the first place.

I am just guessing but the water tower with mickey ears just wasnt the calling card like the tree of life, the castle, spaceship earth....I think they needed something to standout...I know my kids grew up saying are we going back to the park with the hat, the golf ball, the tree, the castle....I'm just guessing but I think that may have played a part....the water tower just didnt stand out and its still not impressive on the back lot tour
