Hi you Yoopers!

My Dh and I LOVE to come up north...yes, to that state up North of Ohio!

We are taking the kids back up to Mackinac this year and have a question.
We have done the forts, Castle Rock, Lighthouses, even Whitefish Point.
Been to Tahquamenon (sp) Falls, too.

Is there anything else you can suggest?
We will be there during Lilac Festival, so we are headed to the Island, staying at Grand View Resort--Mackinac City.

Can you think of anything else we can do?
Thanks...
Lisa

Hey! We'll be on the Island for the Lilac Festival, too!

How far would you like to go into the UP? I have lots of ideas if you're going up near Copper Harbor, but I think you may have done most everything around the Mackinaw City area.

Have you tried Scalawags or Darrow's in Mackinaw City for whitefish yet?

I just had another thought...

Munising is about two hours from Mackinaw City. If you have time, a Pictured Rocks tour might be nice and relaxing, not to mention beautiful. Lots of waterfalls around the area, too.

Lisa: I know as a lil Troll (lived under bridge in MI ) I always loved my trips to U.P. I loved watching sunset over island and indulging in way to much fudge. I also have fnd memories of eating at local bar/pizza place that has a bridge museum upstairs. Maybe stop at some other cities on way up or way home and take in their local interests.

YES I'M homesick.

I would definitely drive up to Sault Ste. Marie and check out the Soo Locks if you haven't done that already. You are about 45 minutes from there and it is right up I-75. The locks are an awesome site.

There is the Seney Wildlife Refuge about 1-1/2 hours west. North of Seney is Grand Marais which has some great trails & falls and a tall sand dune down to Lake Superior. It is also the end of the Pictured Rocks area which starts in Munising. Munising has a bunch of waterfalls, a glass bottom boat tour to see a shipwreck, and a boat tour to see the Pictured Rocks. All of these are beautiful areas.

If you want more specific info on any of these, pm me and I can get some stuff for you on my way down state in a couple of weeks.

Scutapipig, where are you from in Michigan? Lower Peninsula or Upper Peninsula? I posted a while back looking for anyone else from the UP and didn't get any responses. I was hoping maybe you were a fellow Yooper.

There's a DISer that lives in St Ignace and used to work at one of the restaurants there in town but I haven't seen her post in awhile and off the top of my head, I can't remember her name.

To Lisa.....first of all we go up to Makinaw City every summer and do the same things over and over. Definetly go to the Soo Locks, tho and do the boat thru them. That's awesome.

West of Mackinaw City there's the state park with beautiful sand dunes and remote beaches. My boys love climbing the dunes.

Have you done the bikes around Mackinac Island? That's a lot of fun with things to see and do on the way around.

We always stay at Chippewa Lodge (not the Chippewa on the island) which is a wonderful family owned motel with a great pool and all day coffee....big plus for me! :cheer2:

Feel free to PM if you have more questions. :)

UP Disney...I'm in West Michigan, but absolutely LOVE the UP. In my younger days, I would head up with friends twice a year and spend long weekends in the Keweenaw Peninsula.

Do I qualify as a Yooper if I'm a Yooper in my heart? I'd much rather be a Yooper than a Troll, but for now, I have to settle for living under the Bridge.

Well, I was born a troll but have lived in the UP more than half my life. I went to Michigan Tech and loved the Keweenaw. Luckily, I have a job that gets me up there a couple of times a year. Plus, my family go up camping at least once a year at McLain or Fort Wilkins State Park.

I guess someone who loves it as much as you should be considered at least an honorary Yooper!!!

What part of West Michigan? :)

If you're willing to take a drive farther north, copper country is beautiful. The Soo Locks are also interesting.

Hi Yoopers!! We have a summer place on Sugar Island in the Soo. I would definately go there. There is lots to do. Do the boat tour through the Soo locks...shop on "fudgie row"...there is a Tower of history that you can go to the top and see for miles...there is also a museum that is an actual ship you can tour called the Valley camp that is right on the water. Lots of artifact from the Edmund Fitzgerald..Have fun... :)

Yep! I think we have done everything around that area. Have not tried Darrows...maybe this time.

Have not been that far up north to Copper Harbor. My kids love to see the Moose Crossing signs when we go to Whitefish point. That wakes my boys right up!
When will you be going?

BTW, we lived near E Grand Rapids for about a year(Calvin S.E.) Then we moved out to the Caledonia area, Dutton to be exact. I really miss that place.

Ok...here is a place I have not heard of yet! Is this on the Michigan side?
Where exactly and how far?
Thanks

we did a vacay up there a few years ago, did many of those same things you mentioned. we also explored and hiked at pictured rocks, great giant dune to play on in the park.

if we get to go back someday we'll go see more lighthouses, as well as about 10 nor 11 more waterfalls, (according to the throw we bought). and maybe more of the lake michigan side.
