neither. I prefer Joann Fabrics
I wish mine was not a trek to get to because that place is awesome. They have hands down the best selection of things I’m interested in. I could spend hours in there and never go near the fabric section. When my grandmother was alive (a quilter) that’s where I’d go to pick out her Christmas gifts.

Surprisingly, no. If anything, someone mentioning Chick Fil A got more of a reaction than people saying they don't go to Hobby Lobby for moral and ethnical reasons.
I don’t know, I think the craft male employee discussion already has that beat.

I don’t care if people opt to discuss their store preferences based on the businesses own craft merits or the politics. I haven’t even mentioned the cornucopia of materials that craft stores offer to assemble your own Ouija board!🔥👻

I’d say the ratio of male to female employees at my Michael’s is 50/50. Probably 2/3 women vs 1/3 men as far as shopping for craft supplies but I see plenty of guys picking up stuff. In my experience (I was customer service at Michael’s for about a year) guys tend to know what they’re after, grab it and go while women tend to linger.

Optically I can see where the remark came from but it’s not a true assessment overall. I can also see why it rankled some because it gives the impression that guys don’t craft or that it’s a “girly” thing. Neither of which is true.
The only one I’ve never seen a male employee working was Joanns. But he may have been in the restroom smoking.

I'm in these stores all the time. Many different locations around town. There are some male employees. But I'm sorry to say they are almost always managers.

As far as customers, I'd say at least 75 percent are women.

I went into a Joann's a few months ago. It was 1 of the most depressing stores I've seen in a long time. Never going back there again.

I asked DH about the “males in these stores” thing last night because he seems to know Michael’s better than I do when we do go in. He goes in to buy cake supplies (he taught cake decorating at one point) and fly fishing materials (though he prefers other places for quality but he’ll go there in a pinch). Michael’s is closest to us.

I think it depends on the location. If you put all three of them near me side by side I’m going to Joann every time. It’s huge, has any project you can think of, neat, unique supplies, variety and most importantly well stocked. Kind of how Michael’s by me used to be. I can’t tell you how many times I’ve walked out Michael’s in recent years with absolutely nothing.

Really? Plenty? The only one of these stores we have here is Michael's and I shop there fairly often for cake decorating goods. I can honestly say the only men I've ever seen in there are carrying stuff for the woman they're with. And I have never, ever seen a male staff member.

I haven't really been to many Michael's stores but at Joann there are typically men there alone or maybe with kids. My last trip there I was helping out my dad, who needed matching plain solid-colored T-shirts for an event. While I suppose they're sold at these crafts stores for custom printing or decoration, they are just T-shirts that aren't much different than one can find at other stores. Only they had a good price and I was able to apply an additional coupon. In addition to that, the majority of these were adult men's, although I guess they were theoretically unisex.

I found it offputting because it was incredibly sexist. I get that it was a joke, but not at all a funny one.
The face on my husband (who was sitting next to me at the time giving the cat treats) showed him and I are on the same page with that sort of comment. He cringed immediately and was like "wow". An off-handed comment intended to be sarcastic on the thread but none the less one that is telling, be it a true comment by a spouse or a made up one.

The only time I have bought one from a craft store was back in college when we had a highlighter party but that is something I see a lot when I go in there. It's actually a good spot to find plain colored tees. Walmart is another good spot and I would say sometimes cheaper but you usually don't have as much color choice mainly white and black whereas the craft stores tend to have more variety.

:confused3 My comment was specifically about what I've observed, and that I'll keep an eye out during future visits. I didn't make the "estrogen" comment or imply anything about who crafts or who doesn't. In fairness, I'm almost always there between about 10:00 am and 2:00 pm; maybe all the guy crafters shop after work?

**I** made the estrogen comment. Well, actually, my DH is the one who makes the estrogen comment. I was stupid enough to post it here. So that's on me.

:flower3: FWIW, I was fine with it. I'm surprised (although I guess I shouldn't be ;) ) at how little it takes to offend these days. Carry on!

I didn’t say you did. That’s why that observation was spaced down and separate from my response to your quote. Maybe I should have posted that part first? That part was a totally in general thing and wasn’t directed at you or anyone.

Who said crafting is for women. We guys totally craft. In fact here's my favorite craft store. It's so big it doesn't fit in the picture.
