Mexico is "Enraged" with the proposed U.S wall.

$8 billion for a wall? How about rebuilding NO first? Or upgrading our interstate system, our power grids, and the rest of our infrastructure. Mostly it seems to be people from the North, not those living in border states, that support this wall.

"Illegal" Mexican workers milk the cows, and harvest our crops...I guess it will be fine for the price of those crops to double or tripple to pay Americans enough to do those jobs? Or how about the service industry, hotel employees, etc? Maybe $200 night average for motel/hotel stays will be more your cup of tea?

In truth, most "illegal" Mexican immigrants serve our society, they perform jobs that most Americans will not, or would not, at the wages they currently receive.

And guess what, employers are currently required to verify someone legal status and eligibility to work in the US...it is called an I-9 form. Hasn't stopped anyone, including Wal-mart, from hiring undocumented workers.

The government has no responsibility to rebuild N.O.
after they leave and we stop spending our money to give them free healthcare, we will have more to spend on other things. look at unemployment rates, do you honestly think no one will fill these jobs?

Would you milk cows and pick strawberries for $5 (or less) per hour? Again, to pay Americans to perform those tasks the cost of food will have to increase substantially.

Ummm...the Gov't has no responsibility to rebuild NO? The Government CERTAINLY has an obligation to provide for the common welfare of our people, whether it physically rebuilds the city or not. The government has an obligation to bolster our failing infrastructures nationwide.

The government has no responsibilty to rebuild homes or businesses. infrastructure, yes, but private things? no. And if i needed a job, yes i would pick strawberries for 5 bucks an hour.

I think it's a GREAT idea!! I cannot think of a better way to keep the illegal immigrants out of this country. I think the expense of the wall would pay for itself within weeks!

Please don't flame me, but the illegal immigration issue is truly at a climax!! When the majority of my son's school is spanish speaking (79%), I cannot go anywhere without seeing signs in both spanish and english (spanish sometimes 1st!!) and no one speaking english, it drives me insane!!!

Why should I have to learn how to speak spanish??? I should not! LEGAL immigrants should be forced to speak english, just MHO.

The lawmakers in our state are actually trying to propose a bill to offer medicaid and federal aid to illegal immigrant WTH??????

Do you think we can help AMERICAN citizens first before illegals??

Just had to vent, it makes me want to scream!! Flame away :firefight

No flaming here........I completely agree with you! I was just discussing this topic with my hubby yesterday telling him how Stupid it is that we may become a country with English as a 2nd language! Give me a break!!!!!!!!

This quote from the article astounds me:

"We learned to believe in the United States. We have a binational life," he said of Zacatecas, a state that has been sending migrants north for more than a century. "It isn't just a feeling of rejection. It's against what we see as part of our life, our culture, our territory."

Mexicans see the U.S. as their territory? Their culture? It's our territory. We make the rules, and we can no longer support an unchecked flow of poor people coming to the U.S. Anyone who has given to the Giving Trees this Christmas knows we have enough poor people of our own.

And this sentence from the article:

"Fernando Robledo, 42, of the western state of Zacatecas, says the proposals could stem migration and disrupt families by breaking cross-border ties."

That's the point. We want to stem migration, or illegal immigration, as we call it.

As for funding, can't they use the money for that Alaskan bridge to nowhere? That should fund a few hundred miles of fence.

Why should I have to learn how to speak spanish??? I should not! LEGAL immigrants should be forced to speak english, just MHO.

The US has no official language, and if you think all immigrants should speak only the language of the country they immigrate into, perhaps we should all be speaking Native American dialects. Hmmm...then again, Spanish WAS spoken by many folks along the border BEFORE English ever was. No one is "forcing" you to speak Spanish, are they?

In our area 55% of the people are of Hispanic/Mexican decent. I only hope they'll treat the new "minority" better than they were treated.

All for a wall - it would be a real step towards securing our boarders against terrorism. A wall with secure boarders is more important than any other "law" making it difficult for illegals to get health care, education, or jobs once they are already here.

This country should also offer to work with the Latin countries to encourage econonomic growth in Latin America . If the latinos have a reason to stay in their own countries, they won't be so desparate to come here. It would be a win win situation.

Do you think you could LIVE on $5 an hour? Especially when it is only seasonal work? And no health insurance or retirement benefits?

I have NO problem with LEGAL immigrants...but this wall is to prevent ILLEGAL immigrants........... Do NOT force me to accept someone breaking the law...I have a right as a Legal American to believe that you should go about acquiring citizenship the PROPER ways.
sorry, just MHO.

We have discussed this before. Hiring someone to pick strawberries for $5 an hour is ILLEGAL. Paying someone $7.50 to pick say 25 quarts of strawberries in one hour would spread an increase of $2.50 in cost over 25 quarts, or 10 cents per quart. Since a quart of strawberries now costs me $4 to $5, I don't mind paying an extra 10 cents to know a U.S. citizen picked the strawberries. Plus, there will be a tax savings because I won't have to pay to educate that illegal immigrant's children, for example.

Nobody's forcing you Lionqueen, but if you and your offspring refuse to adapt to a global culture you will be at a disadvantage in the market place and the work world. It's not a question of "they should/we should" - it's a fact of survival.

I doubt many Americans would pick strawberries, milk cows or do other farm related work in the Texas summer temperatures, even at $10.

BTW, if you think you can hand pick 25 Quarts of strawberries in an hour, you've never picked strawberries. That's 50 pounds, on your knees or bent over in the heat.

BTW, Why do you think $5 (OK $5.15) isn't a legal wage? It may not be where you live, but it is minimum wage under Federal law, and is the minimum wage here in TX.

You honestly think they couldn't find someone who needed a job, that would starve or survive on very little if they did not get a job?

Didn't CAFTA do that?

Basic survival isn't what most Americans consider living, is it? Could you pay rent/housing on $5.15 an hour. Would you be able to pay utilities? Would you be able to own a car, even a beat up jalopy? You may be amazed at some of the conditions these people live in. Most Americans would not be willing to live this way.

No one should have to live that way, not even food pickers. I just read an article about the need for migrant workers decreasing in recent years. Many farms have moved away from labor intensive crops or have increased their mechanisation. You know what's very popular around here and the midwest in the summer? The pick-your-own farm; blueberries, strawberries, you name it.

How many jobs have you worked?
