Mexican Riviera 2/27 - 3/6 - DisneyZell TR new 3/31: FINISHED!!!

DisneyZell – I'm so glad you're continuing with your TR – keep up the good work! You do look like something of a SuperHero in that wet suit. I was so excited to read and to see the beautiful photos of your dolphin swim excursion as I've booked it for myself as well. I have so many questions (I know I'm using my full allotment of questions for the day and I'm warning you in advance some questions may be stupid which I'm known for asking!). (1) Did your family take those photos with you and the dolphin or were they professional pictures? I thought you couldn't bring a camera into the facility. (2) Did they provide everyone with wetsuits? What happens if they run out of your size? (3) You mentioned that the dolphins were slippery – would your hands slip off the dolphin if it was propelling you in the water very fast? I'm really scared about that. (4) I noticed that your hair didn't get wet – do they not require you to shower first before entering the water? (5) I've never worn a wet suit before, would you wear your bathing suit underneath the wet suit? (6) I'm not a good swimmer (not good at treading water either), will I be okay? (7) Does the facility have women/men change rooms so that you can shower and change after the swim? (8) Is the pool fresh water or salt water? (9) Is there anything I should bring along that was not provided? THANK YOU so much in advance for your help!!

I can jump in and answer these questions since I just did this a couple of days ago :)

1) They do not allow cameras in there at all. They are professional photos. We bought the CD, which I believe was right around $200. You get 4 prints with that package. I think the individual photos were $20, and our CD has 122 photos.
2) Yes, wetsuits are provided but they don't require them. They have LOTS.
3) You hold onto the dolphin's fins when it is propelling you around the water. You won't slip off, it's not that slippery. Think of it like smooth rubber. They aren't traveling really fast, and you're wearing a life jacket.
4) Nope, no showering. It's salt water, don't forget. They do ask that you wear no sunscreen, deodorant, hair gel, etc.
5) Yes, you wear your bathing suit underneath. If you get too small a size at first, you can easily switch for a larger size (many people did this) Sizes go up to 4XL I believe. In our group there was a very large woman and she fit into a wetsuit fine. I am not super small, and I fit into a L.
6) You'll be fine. Even young kids are there. you have a life jacket on, so you really just float there.
7) Yes, there are changing/locker rooms. They don't have showers, the shower is by the poolside. You really won't have much time or desire to take a full shower there. You'll just want to rinse off and then go back to the ship and take a real shower.
8) Salt
9) We brought our own towels and we're glad we did. They do provide you with one or more towels, but we wanted one to wrap around us when we left too. Bring your credit card if you think you will want photos (and you will. The photos are amazingly good)

Hi Lissame - thanks for jumping in and answering all my questions. At the end you mentioned that you brought your own towels, where they the ship towels? or your very own towels? If the Disney towels, do we advise someone that we will return them later? How old were your children when your family did the dolphin swim? Is a 6 year old too young still? I'm the only one doing this excursion right now. Thanks again.

They have stacks of ship towels sitting on the benches on the pier, as well as in all of the gathering rooms on the ship and right where you swipe your card to get off the ship they have a huge cart filled with towels. you don't need to check them out or anything, just take them.

No, 6 is not too young. My kids are 10 and 12, but the other two little girls in our session were 5 and 7. The 5 year old was pretty scared of the dolphin at first, but she warmed up after a few minutes, esp when they let her mom ride the dolphin with her.

I'm married and we all know our wives are laughing AT us!

Can't wait to Jump on the Wonder Sunday....

I beg to differ, being a DW, we are laughing with you.....at least in the beginning...... :littleangel:

Maybe we'll meet up. We head out Sunday too.

Now :wizard: for DZ to finish this up before then! I know he's busy packing for his upcoming job on Sunday, but there should be time in between packing and magnet making to get this TR done.

yea, what she said :)

Thanks Lissame. on the shower...I actually took my wetsuit off while everyone was just showering over their wetsuits..then I was able to rinse off completely (not my hair...gotta keep that looking beautiful!). that worked for me.

Disney doesn't even blink at the towels...so just grab a few.

And don't worry about swimming...you just float...no effort involved at all. the only uncomfortable part is the cold...but that only lasts a few seconds and then it goes away.

And I'll officially make the rest of the week a no question limit week. How nice am I? :thumbsup2

I also have to limber up for my time in the trunk. I'm a tall guy...that will take some folding. Maybe I need some ambien and I can sleep until the trunk thumps into your cabin. :cool1:

Well, quite frankly, we didn't want to subject you to being tossed and dropped (can't risk our door not being properly decorated), so we purchased some wheels which DH will affix to the one end of the trunk (thus giving you some much needed air holes that would go unnoticed) and we are planning on rolling you onboard with us. We figured they will just think we are big drinkers if we are bringing that large a "rolling cooler". :rotfl:

Also, by doing this, it will enable you to remain mostly upright while in the confines of the trunk.

So Saturday was a bit of a strange day from my perspective. Even though this was our 4th Disney Cruise, it was the first that didn't go out of Florida...and when you go out of Florida you have Castaway Cay...and then you steam back to port the very next day.

So it was a bit surreal and I kept having to remind myself that when we left Cabo we weren't in port the next day. But even when I woke up I expected to have that feeling...you know what I mean if you have been on a cruise...the feeling that you are back...and the dread of having to leave the ship.

But Alas! It was one more day at sea. Woohoo! (ok, so just to tell you, I typed woohoo 6 times to get it right. Clearly I didn't get enough sleep last night). Unfortunately we were unable to visit Beach Blanket Bingo Buffet....as we had our character breakfast. I know, I know...that's exciting. And the pictures are pretty cool.

To be honest this breakfast was the only place our server fell down a bit. Most of the servers make hats out of the napkins for the kids. While Terry made a few it paled on comparison. However...after having read Cruise Confidential...this may be an area that the servers find degrading and frankly stupid...so maybe that's why? :confused3 But the kids do enjoy that.

DSC_0595.jpg

Connor's semi-hat. I guess that is Goofy?

DSC_0606.jpg

Nick and Chris got theirs. No idea.

DSC_0608.jpg

And then Kathryn was princess lea...and Connor ended up with a bandana. Again...not much effort on this one.

And Minnie

DSC_0600.jpg

And Pluto

DSC_0601.jpg

And the Big Cheese. *gasp* who is steering the ship. OH, so I was wondering...is Mickey Mouse a Admiral now that he has more than 2 ships?

DSC_0604.jpg

Goofy of course

DSC_0611.jpg

And Chip. At least I think this one is chip. the one with the black nose because he eats chocolate chip cookies. That never made sense to me...but it does to the kids which I guess is what matters.

After breakfast we hit the stores. I had decided I wanted a DCL shirt...and the kids needed shirts as well. So we went there...and had a surprise when we hit the Treasure Ketch. Be vewwy, vewwy quiet about this one. As usual our kids had pins to trade and asked to see the CM's pins. This time a box was taken out with a whole bunch of loose pins in it. The CM said "take 4-5 each...but don't tell Mickey". It was one of those little moments of magic :wizard: as pixie dust was spread on us. Given that we had the Curse of the Gemstone Seminar following us all week long maybe we earned it? :rolleyes1

anyway, the kids were beyond themselves thanking the CM who shall remain nameless so they don't get in trouble. :cool1:

We got our shirts and then headed down for Disney Movie Trivia. This time it was time for us to rock and roll...and we ended up tied with another family from the DIS Boards (Andromeda9mm). DW and Andromeda9mm went up to do the tiebreaker. Obviously at this point DW was an expert at tiebreakers and ended up winning. However, they were going to give us more key chains...so we gave them up to the other family.

We ended up chatting with them for a while and eventually took them up to see the suite. The funny thing is, and I'm still wondering this, how much is bragging, and how much is truly that we want to show others how cool the cabin is. Honestly we weren't trying to brag (although if you read my last installment...how good do I look as a superhero?? but I digress), we really wanted to show people since most likely we would never see a cabin like that again! So if you’re out there Andromeda9mm, please don't think we were bragging. :) now that I have protested too much...let's move on, shall we?

Today was a day for Mega Jackpot Bingo. I don't know about you, but I'm a fan of winning cash. Apparently enough to give up $60 for cards. :scared1:

As a hook to get you into the bingo they gave you a free card on Saturday for any purchase in the stores. So naturally we had to go. And surely we couldn't just play that one tiny card, right? So in we went.

Did you know that they have electronic cards for bingo now? You don't have to punch out the numbers...in fact you don't even have to plug the number in the machine, it will do it for you. So essentially I could have paid for it and left and let it do it's thing. As it turned out the end result would have been the same! We bought the family pack which was an electronic scorer with 24 cards (I think) and another 2 packs of paper cards.

DSC_0615.jpg

DW and Connor posing with the electronic scorer

DSC_0616.jpg

And here I am after I took it back. It was mine! Mine I tell you!

So play we did. We were hot and heavy and came within two numbers several times. We didn't win squat. DW has now banned me from all future Bingo playing endeavors. Don't tell her this, but I agree. What a waste of money. I know a lot of folks go every day and play...and maybe they win. An interesting tidbit...not a single paper card won on any of the games we played. I thought that was kind of interesting. where are the conspiracy theororists on that one?

As we missed BBBB for breakfast...we had to hit it for lunch. Large shrimp cocktail.. mmmmmm. Ever wonder if the food starts to go bad toward the end of the cruise? as I chowing on my shrimp this thought crosses my mind and as shrimp is one of the things you can frequently get food poisoning from I thought about this. Then I popped another shrimp in my mouth. Nothing happened to me...and I suppose it will stay fresh in your fridge for a week no problem. but what about the 15 day cruises? is everything in deep freeze? Cruise Confidential did not share that with me. I need a detailed behind the scenes tour. :thumbsup2

But alas it was time to start the not so fun stuff...we had to start packing. We didn't want to scramble that night so we started in the afternoon. I hate packing.

At 2:00 it was time to go listen to the Imagineer (Bob something) talk specifically about the Dream. His talk in general about Imagineering was cool...and we were going to be on the Dream so we wanted to do this...and we did. It was really cool to hear about the new things on the ship. Much like Quiltteddy had originally said she wanted to not know everything...I now know most if not all of what we will see and do. But I think it will still be fun...as i'll be experiencing it...not just watching it on a screen. needless to say it was cool seeing the Dream in Europe...covered in snow. Yes snow! Pretty crazy.

The next thing we did was an exclusive to the Concierge guests. I've read a couple of TR's that talked about wanting to book Tea with Wendy and being unable to because it wasn't offered. Apparently they are changing it to Disney Friends Tea...and the Concierge cruisers were the only ones invited. I had no idea what this was going to be about...nor did I expect to dress up like a princess. I'm thinking this one might have been better if you had girls...which I did not.

We all got these crown making kits....we had cookies and a tea pot on our table. As they don't want anyone burned...and because kids don't like tea, the pots had apple juice in them. Snow White greeted us as we came in, and Dopey joined her as well. they showed us how to make the crowns and then how to drink our tea. Then they did the do-si-do dance. No I didn't participate. :)

Then we got pictures with Snow White and Dopey.

DSC_0641.jpg

So we got to do it again. Our kids should know by now that if they don't do it right the first time they just do it again. Sheesh!

The day was quickly winding down. Again...so sad. Back to the room to get dressed for our last night. We were in Animators. Now...if I like my servers I like to play a joke on them. I'm sure it's the last thing they need...and they probably roll their eyes. But we sent in the 4 kids with $5 each for Maggie and Terry. Their job? To give each of them $5, tell them their parents couldn't make it and that we told them they needed to tip them. Obviously this would be mean if it were true...but funny since it's not. Nick was supposed to text us once they were seated. He did...and said that Kathryn had given us up to Terry and Maggie...that was pretty good, but as we rounded the corner and out came Terry...He looked at us like only Terry could look at us and said "come on, stop fooling around, I KNEW you weren't skipping Dinner". The Jig was up.

But I still thought it was funny. We tipped both of them as well as Wit (our head server) very well as they really did a terrific job...so I was more than happy to hand them their envelopes. Hopefully they appreciated the amount.

One last dinner picture of the ladies

DSC_0644.jpg

Our whole group (I can't remember if I had already posted this...But even if I did it's a cool picture. We will definitely remember Maggie, Terry and Wit for some time and hope to see them on future cruises.

After dinner we had to make a decision on our pictures. We ended up only buying our embarkation photo..and that's it...but I did try to pinch a couple by taking pictures. I know other DISers have been successful...as you can see I was not!

DSC_0645.jpg

DSC_0648.jpg

But we have our own Nikon D50 which is what the cruise used to use...so our pictures turned out fine.

OH, another rant. In the past...when you did the formal pictures in the lobby, etc....they would take your picture and then take another with your camera if you wanted. for some reason they don't do that anymore...that annoys me. Disney has always been good about that...not sure why that changed. So be aware of that....not much you can do. I still think the shutters concept is flawed..they print out so many pictures that get thrown away...if you could just pick and choose they would save money and maybe...oh I don't know, charge less??? But I digress...

We headed up to the pool one last time...which was fantastic. Two things...one the pool was heated (unlike my Mulan fiasco), and the ship was really rocking so there were some really cool waves in the pool. I honestly really enjoyed that...and highly recommend it.

I didn't think the girls were going to show up...but finally they did...one last night of flirting with the girls and boys. It's like watching humanity squeezed down into pint-sized packages. Very entertaining!

finally, though, it was time to go back to the room...last night in the squeaky stateroom...

DSC_0649.jpg

And a dinosaur awaited us!

Next up: Chapter 11, the final chapter!

Thanks once again for suffering through...we are almost there. And soon I have to start a pre-trip report for our July trip on the Dream! :lmao:

Well, quite frankly, we didn't want to subject you to being tossed and dropped (can't risk our door not being properly decorated), so we purchased some wheels which DH will affix to the one end of the trunk (thus giving you some much needed air holes that would go unnoticed) and we are planning on rolling you onboard with us. That's excellent. sounds like I'll be riding in style. I always look at all those little kids who get to roll around in strollers...and I'm always jealous. So now I'll be like them. I do weigh in the 200's...so Quiltteddy Hubby will get a workout! :cool1:

DZ

Hi DZ - about tipping. Do you hand the tip envelopes to your servers at the start of dinner on the last night or after dinner? What about your stateroom host/hostess? What if you don't see hi/her that last night? Do you leave it in your cabin? Leave with Guest Services? Any ideas? Thanks again for your all your input.

.Now...if I like my servers I like to play a joke on them.

Shocking! Geeze, I would have NEVER pegged YOU as a practical joker. :lmao:

Well, like I've previously said, after discovering just how high maintenance you are, we had to make a few changes. But, hey, I can roll with the best of 'em! Make sure you are behind the building no later than 12:00 pm. We are due to arrive between 12:00 and 12:30. If we are not there, you should wait patiently. Yes, I know, "patiently" is apparently not in your vocabulary either, but better you than me. :cool1: Hopefully as we drag you in, they won't think we are alcoholics.

On a final note, I'd like to really thank you for such an entertaining TR. When I return I can start my own thread put up a picture of me and hubby and then simply refer the rest of the TR to your thread! :cool1:

Seriously, though, it was quite the entertaining read! You also basically FINISHED it!!! :goodvibes

Dang, our door is gonna look great when you get done with it!!

you can do any number of things. If you charge it to your room they will give it to everyone after the cruise. We like to give it them personally, especially if they have done well.

I think the servers expect it on that last night...so we like to give it to them then. We actually had to leave our stateroom one in our room as he changed floors so wasn't around on debarkation day....that's the first time we've done that.

Again, I like to give it them in person....then you can shake their hand and thank them personally for making the cruise magical. If they don't make it magical...then don't. how's that for wishy washy? :thumbsup2

thank you for being the most entertaining contributor to any TR I've ever done. Well, ok I've only done three...but you have kept me going...and I might even finish it tomorrow. that is a miracle in and of itself!

I'd wish you a happy cruise, but since I'll be in the box I'll just do it in person. :lmao:

I'm picturing someone who hasn't read all of our banter trying to figure out what the heck we are talking about! :rolleyes1

My pleasure....I think we pretty much have the same comical personality and therefore it was easy. Just think of how you can strut your stuff if you do finish it tomorrow! :woohoo:

Yes, you will be and you can.....assuming we actually UNLOCK it once we get you in there! :rotfl:

OMG, your final comment literally made me just burst out laughing! Can you imagine what is going through their head?!?!? Probably also wondering how far back we go too.

Although I'm not sure anyone other than Quiltteddy is still reading this (I imagine quite a few folks had some serious injuries from falling asleep and having their heads hit their keyboards. Somewhere, someone from the ER departments of the local hospitals should thank me for writing my Trip Reports! :lmao: ), but I shall push on. Perhaps today I will complete my trip report. Considering I never finished my Christmas one...that is a pretty big accomplishment.

So I shall try.

I do get to post my favorite picture of the whole trip. Unfortunately for you it won't be until the end of today's installment. :thumbsup2

on Debarkation day you have a choice of going to a sit down restaurant and being served by your servers, or to go up and hit the BBBBBBBBBBBB. This choice is really simple...if you liked your servers you go there...if you don't you go to BBBBBBBBBBBBBBB. As I've mentioned before, we didn't like our servers on our Christmas Cruise...so on that cruise we went to the buffet. And ironically we saw our server from Palo who was working there and whom we had loved. I forgot about that until just now. Maybe I could finish the Christmas TR. Hmmm...I'll have to think about that and see if DW still has the notes. :thumbsup2

Anyhooo, clearly we liked our servers so it was off to breakfast. We brought the remainder of our alcohol, which was quite a lot. Now, there is a certain irony to that because you would think I would learn my lesson and on the next cruise be smart about the amount of Beer I'm bringing onboard. However, our next cruise will be with a different set of friends...and my buddy drinks more than our neighbors did...so being the good friend that I am, I will find it necessary to imbibe along with him which means I'll have to think about how the heck I judge how much beer to bring onboard. This is something I will address when I begin my pre-trip report for our July cruise! :)

They seemed happy to receive the alcohol, particularly the various froo-froo drinks I had bought for DW. No idea if they really didn't care or not..but there it is. :)

In past cruises we had always taken our luggage with us (and our neighbors had to because they had to debark early due to a flight), but in this case we were spending the day in Los Angeles so we weren't in a hurry. So we left our luggage in our room and then hit breakfast sans luggage. That was nice. :)

Then we headed up to our room to get our stuff. Really sad leaving our big room knowing that there is a vast possibility that we will never see a room this size on a ship ever again.

DSC_0663.jpg

One more shot on the balcony

And then it was time for our biggest vacation tradition...wander around and take pictures. We also squeezed in one last game of foosball as a family.

DSC_0666.jpg

Foosball...dang we need to get one of these

DSC_0667.jpg

Well...of course we would take a picture here. And Quiltteddy I'm not pleased that you guys will be ordering my pizza in a few short days!

DSC_0669.jpg

Aw, aren't they cute?

DSC_0671.jpg

By goofy's galley. I think DW is the only one that ever got anything from the galley, but...

DSC_0672.jpg

Yeah, I was at the ice cream place at least once a day. oh, and I would have this day if they had it turned on! :thumbsup2

DSC_0674.jpg

One last soda...and look! I'm not using my own plastic cup! :lmao:

DSC_0679.jpg

And the family picture in the atrium

so a funny one about that. As you all know I was not pleased with our Concierge...I frankly don't think he did squat for us. But of course I felt obligated to tip him. I had money in the envelope but didn't see him the last night. I had determined in my head that if I saw him before we left the ship I would give it to him...otherwise I wouldn't since he didn't do anything for us. Mean? maybe...but I also feel like he should have stopped by on debarkation morning and said goodbye...but he didn't do that.

Then we walked into the atrium to take the picture above and guess who was right behind the status of Ariel? Yup. Thomas. So he got his money...and we got a picture out of the deal. Actually if you think of it that way, we probably paid about the same amount for him to take our picture as we would have in shutter. :woohoo:

The floors are all assigned a character (apparently. I didn't know this to be honest...but DW's notes specifically say that it does...and I learned long ago to defer to her judgment because if I don't I will be proved wrong :) ). So we had a bit more time to kill (we were Tinkerbell). So we headed to Diversions to wait it out and play a game or two.

Shortly thereafter it was time...our group was announced and off we went.

DSC_0681.jpg

A good and bad sign

DSC_0682.jpg

Back in the USA!

DSC_0685.jpg

Quick picture by the back of the ship (to the exasperation of the CM working there...she clearly wanted us gone. :)

DSC_0686.jpg

Here is our section!

We found a porter...he found our luggage...and in less than 15 minutes we were off the ship and loading the luggage into DW's dad's car.

I won't bore you with the rest of the day except to say we did go to In-N-Out (Double Double baby!) again. So don't miss that...very important. Get that Quiltteddy???

I'm trying to think of anything else that I have not shared with you as far as tips. I think one of the best is to understand that you don't have to bring your whole closet with you. Figure out what you are going to pack...and then reduce it by 1/2. That should be about right.

But above all, have fun. This is your cruise, you paid to go on it, and deserve the vacation. If your servers don't work for you...talk to your head waiter right away. But on the flip side, don't be an ugly American...ugh...that annoys me about as much as anything.

One other thing...I did finish Cruise Confidential...for the several who asked if it would ruin your image of cruising the answer is no. Go for it...it's a very entertaining delightful and enlightening book...and you will even more agree with my feelings on ugly Americans. :)

So with no further ado...my favorite picture of the whole trip:

DSC_0688.jpg

We stayed in a hotel Sunday night and flew home Monday. The hotel had two double beds. So we each got a kid in our beds...and let's just say our kids are not good bed buddies. I got Connor who kept beating me up through the night (not sure why), and DW got Nick who kept throwing his arm over her. I guess he is ready for when he grows up! Needless to say neither of us got much sleep. At some point DW gave up and hauled a bunch of pillows into the bathroom and read in the tub. Pretty ingenious. :)

So I think that's it unless anyone has any questions. I'm enjoying this so I might just go back and finish my Christmas cruise just to say that I did. And then look for my pre-trippie coming up soon.

thank you all for suffering through this with me...hopefully you enjoyed it, I know I enjoyed the feedback.

for all of you headed out on a cruise in the next few weeks let me leave you with this sentiment:

I HATE YOU

:)

Just kidding. :thumbsup2 Now that was vicious! enjoy your trips!

EXCELLENTE!

I thoroughly enjoyed your trippie! I wish I could write.

We're off to DL in 9 days! What was I thinking going during spring break?! :scared1:

Thanks again,

Hi Meredith...it's DW this time...I am very jealous of your trip to DL! That was my home away from home growing up in Orange County! And to top it off...tonight/tomorrow we are supposed to get a Noreaster!!! This weather sucks! I hope you have a magical time though and it isn't too crowded.
