Based on the reviews, it sounds like the Insectarium could be part of a fun road trip for us. The Advocate had a good article on it in yesterday's paper. I think we'll give it a little while, however, to let the initial crowds wind down.

Kathy - love the new wheels! I'm really starting to like the new smaller crossover-type vehicles. If they could come up with one that has decent gas mileage plus reliability, I'd probably look hard at them for my next vehicle.

lucas - If you're still lurking, I think you'll be in town for a wedding the same time as one we're attending. I know it's a slim chance, but I wonder if it might be the same one? The one we're attending is on the 28th. You can pm me if you don't want to share the specifics.

shovan - Have you figured out if the sunscreen reaction is to a specific ingredient? I know a couple of people who use a brush-on type sunscreen & love it. The sunscreen is in powdered form, so it's not greasy at all, and is stored in the handle of the brush. It's almost like a make-up style applicator. I know one of the users has skin / allergy issues, and this sunscreen was strongly recommended by the dermatologist. I have no idea how expensive it is (especially since it's probably not available OTC), but if you have sensitivity issues, it might be worth it. No idea how it would hold up in the pool, however. I can find out the name if you're interested.

Christie, We were there during the President's Day weekend & it was very crowded! I think President's day is Feb 16th & Mardi Gras is the 24th next year.

cajunmommy, No I haven't seen a dermatologist for it yet, so I don't know. Whatever's causing it, is also in self-tanning products, I can't use those either. I've spoken to my G.P. & my pharmacist. So far, I've tried three different sunscreens they have recommended & all three still gave me a rash. The last one the pharmacist said was recommended by dermatologist, was just as bad & it cost $29! If you have a chance to ask your friend, I'd appreciate it. Thanks!

I responded to your thread, but I wanted to say that the mixed reviews sort of represent a cross-section of people's overall opinions of New Orleans: They either love it or they hate it. You'd have to visit to see for yourself.

I also think that they differing opinions are those people who live here vs. those who don't. Since we live here, we're used to the dirt, crime and "lewdness". It is what we are accustomed to. Someone from a more sanitized part of the US may come here and be shocked at what they see. But ya know, to each his own. But I think that anyone who has lived in Europe wouldn't blink an eye at our "lewdness".

Sounds like a very "refreshing" experience of the US

My good friend and I have gone a day of plantation touring for my birthday every year since I turned 19, so we've seen lots of plantations.

Here are my top three:
1) Laura- This tour focuses on the realistic side of plantation life, not the "Gone With the Wind" life often dramatized by Hollywood. The tour also focuses on the life of the family who owned this plantation for many generations- a very colorful family. Also, Disney fans will love this: the reason the house was saved from ruin was because a man named Alcee Fortier recorded interesting tales that he overheard the workers telling while he was visiting in the 1870's- these tales are known as the Br'er Rabbit tales, which were used to make the movie Song of the South and of course Splash Mountain in WDW. The tour can also given in French if you speak it.

2) Houmas House- While not as intersting as Laura, IMO, it is the most beautiful. Beautiful home, furnishings, and stunning grounds. You can also get a cocktail over in the garconniere- I like a cocktail while I tour. For all the Bette Davis fans, the movie "Hush, Hush Sweet Charlotte" was filmed here.

3) The Myrtles- The most haunted house in the US. While it isn't the most beautiful or interesting, the sheer suspense at possibly seeing a ghost keeps things entertaining. I believe in ghosts, and this place gave me the heebie-jeebies the entire time I was there. This is in St Francisville, which has some other lovely homes to visit as well. Rosedown Plantation isn't too far away, which has huge grounds and plenty of gardens and outbuildings to explore.

I also like Oak Alley plantation, which gives more of that "Gone With the Wind' type of tour. They also serve mint juleps on the veranda. It is close to Laura, so they can both be easily toured in one day together.

Thanks soo much! I´m really getting excited about this new vacation strategy of ours. We had originally planned on spending a week in the Florida Keys prior to Orlando, but then decided we wanted something totally different

But my car is only about 2 years old so no new car for me yet. I have thought about selling it though. It's a 2006 Pontiac Vibe - bright red. It's really cute, but I never drive it. It only has about 7000 miles on it!

on another note - I am kind of nervous because I have this pain on the right side under my rib cage. I am prone to hypochondria (just nervous everything is something major) then minimize and don't worry about it. could be one of 20 different things - maybe gall bladder? just had a friend who had hers out last week - maybe it is sympathy pains? hope it is nothing major...just keep me in your thoughts please!

FYI - when I had gallbladder problems it was hideous, agonizing, "I think I'm going to die" pain. I've had a twitch under my rib cage and it was always just sort of a pinched muscle -went away with no treatment.

Okay, since you really don't think I am cooky(I sort of think I am!!) when my child gets sick, you won't find it yucky to tell you that Ash had diarrhea issues this morning. Yay!!!
I can tell YOU that i have secretly checked her belly the past 2 nights in her sleep, for spleen enlargement. None.

I want to see Evergreen. My family lived on that plantation way back in the day.

They do not do tours anymore from what i understand, but b/c of my family history, we have been allowed tours in the past. I had contacted them a year ago and heard nothing though.
