Metro New Orleans DISers - check in!!! - 09/2009

They will bloom this year, my neighbor hacks hers off every year and they always come back, just not in a big pretty tree, I prefer mine being big beautiful full size trees.

I call Crepe Murder LMAO
http://grumpygardener.southernliving.com/grumpy_gardener/2009/02/what-concerns-p.html
Here is an article about pruning them.... just know if I was there I would be chaining myself to your trees right about now!! HMMM.. maybe ill go do that to the neighbors today, I see the husband out there with his clippers. :rotfl2::rotfl2:

Only reason I ask about the bugs is we spent 10 nights camping at fort wilderness and I swear we didnt see anything anymore than what we have at home.

We are a pretty buggy place here too, so I guess I just can't imagine it is that much worse , which is prob why the pumpkin center lady doesnt think it is that bad.

How neat you have a neighbor from here!!

Ha! This girl we met across the street told me the EXACT same thing today! She said it kills her when people prune them-she said she hasn't ever pruned hers. She also said that she LOVES when they bloom and all the blooms "snow down-it looks like a princess movie!"
Ok, so we may not prune the ones on the side of the house- except maybe a little to get the branches from over the roof line.

Remember that Disney has exterminators and keep it up. BUT I am having a better outlook since the Birds of Paradise came down and things are pruned back. And they WERE BoP- they were White Birds of Paradise, not the smaller orange variety. We are learning a lot.

Now after my hubby gets all that done, we will be killing the chinch bugs that ate the lawn. Then doing seeds or plugs or maybe even sod.

Hey y'all,

Lori, Prayers that your MawMaw being called home is an easy & peaceful move for her.:flower3:

I've been looking at your yard & pool pics. I can understand why it is a daunting & overwhelming. BUT I can also picture it cleaned up & green! It is goiing to be awesome! I'm totally jealous of your pretty, clean, blue & covered pool! Especially with the huge amounts of money we are getting ready to dump into our backyard! We are close to picking the pool guy, then I'll have to take some before, during & after pics.
.

I am looking forward to hearing what you all get done.
I know you are getting the pool resurfaced.

It IS daunting and overwhelimg b/c Paul and I both have been used to a easy to take care of garden and yard. This is a lot of work- espo when you are on your own. But we are finding a couple neighbors to be very nice and helpful. One is helping Paul to transport the massive heap of foliage to the landfill next weekend. He has a flat bed trailer.
Otherwise, we'd be $900 lighter.

Any ideas on a "thank you" for that??

Hey y'all!

I realize I haven't posted in forever, but I have been on FB a bit. Some mini-dramas going on around here, but nothing major, just annoyances mostly. Plumbing issues (just in time for the tax refund of course!), minor work issues with DH, and Erik cut three teeth in one week! Yep, that was fun- little guy did not take that well at all! I still haven't found a part time job yet but I'm now thinking I should give up on that until after our vacation because I don't want to get hired and then tell them I'm leaving for two weeks in about a month. (Disney in 48 days! :cool1:)

I think I may have a lead in getting Sienna in Hynes next year, maybe, so keep your fingers and toes crossed- I need the good luck!

We planted our creoles and a couple of hibiscus. Now we're waiting for the big garden show in City Park on April 10-11 to get the rest of our plants. We're ready to do some gardening!:flower3:

Bethany- I just did the park map cleanout last year- I can't BELIEVE how much I had saved from my 13 (:rolleyes1) trips. I kept one set of maps from each trip, which seems like a lot but I actually wound up throwing two bags full of extra maps, brochures, etc. My first maps are from my first trip in 1987...I'll have to see if I can scan them in the computer. They are so much fun to look at!

Cara- I'm glad Logan's arm isn't broken. I feel bad for Fletcher too- poor guy.

Lori- I'm sorry to hear about your mawmaw, but she is going to a better place. My grandmother is 93, so I can relate. She's lived a long, fulfilling life, but I'm sure my dad and sister will be thrilled to see her again. I commented already about the plants and your critter on FB, but I agree with Sheryl that I can see the potential in your yard- it is going to be beautiful! It is just overwhelming for you to see this just yet. :flower3:

Serena- So about poor Kodi! Glad she is okay!

Kathy- I've never heard of that place, but it sounds good! Thanks for the tip!

Wow, Lorie, you all have been busy! At least Erik got all 3 in at once and maybe you'll have a little break. I sure do hope you can get Sienna into your school of choice!

I AM looking forward to having a nice yard, with a little less WORK written all over it. I am praying we took or are taking care of the possible critter issue before it happens. I am buying borax tomorrow for my walkway and entryway.
I had visions of campouts in the woods with the kids and pinics out there too- but when I heard about the reason for my phobia being rampant- it all went downhill in my mind and I was/am crushed. I heard you just need to spray the grounds really well to keep them at bay. We never had to do that at our house in Covington.

I love this house and hope this works out like we were thinking before we got it.

I did the same thing with all the WDW pamphlets before we moved. Weeded out.
And believe it or not, we are still weeding out- although no more Disney maps!

I am PROUD of Paul, who has stepped out of his box to help me be happier. He bought an electric saw to take down the dead stuff and prune. If you knew him well, you'd know this is out of his area of expertise. I was half laughing half really pleased with him that he did all this himself all day. Even when the saw's chain kept popping off, he kept going. Which is big for him, b/c 10 years ago he'd have given up, cursed it all, thrown it away and hired someone b/c he and power tools do NOT go hand in hand. he says every time he tried to use one they break or he ruins the project. I think he's never had the chance and his dad never did any of that either. He says God didn't gift him with the ability.

He even asked the neighbor if HIS wife had ever told HIM that she was proud b/c he was handling a big power tool. The neighbor kinda laughed at him, not sure if he was serious.:rolleyes1:laughing:

BTW- my mawmaw is STILL hanging on. I am glad but not sure how serious hospice was! Anyway- thanks ya''l'. Missing home so much, not good with change- but today was better and it was sunny and windy bit beautiful

Lori

Good morning:goodvibes

What a great, relaxing weekend. I caught up on my DVRs to be watched list: Friday we watched The Hurt Locker. It was very good and intense. I'd like to watch it again someday. Saturday we watched Harry Potter and the Half Blood Prince. Love Harry!

Yesterday, we ate at PF Chang's. They added a happy hour there with appetizers for $4. Darryl and I split 3 appetizers (crispy green beans with a delicious dipping sauce, chicken lettuce wraps and pan seared mushrooms) and then we split the salt and pepper calmari for the entree--delicious!!!

I'm going to go back now and read what I missed over the past few days. Ya'll have a wonderful day!

Lori- Laughing about that So.Living article that Jen sent, because I was about to dig it out myself! Put me firmly in the anti-crepe murder corner! It bugs me to pieces when I see what some of our neighbors have done to those beautiful trees. Guess I have to thank my DMom for that. We had 8 along the drive / front of the house that I had to help prune. HATED doing that chore years ago, but I sure did develop an appreciation for properly pruned crepe myrtles.

If the neighbors mentioned 2yrs worth of neglect, then I understand the overgrowth. Be patient & selective in the pruning. It's definitely OK to remove the branches that are up against the house. If they haven't started to green up yet, you should still see flowers this summer. And kudos to DH for entering the brave new world of powertools!

So awesome that your neighbors are being neighborly! I know gifts of food are tricky, but I bet they'd appreciate some LA home cooking.

Prayers being said for your mawmaw.

So, I see I'm not the only map-hoarder. I've got folders of them from all of my past trips. Don't know why I've saved them. I do admit it's fun to look back at the old ones to see how much things have changed. Just think how different the MK map will look in just a little while once all the Fantasyland updates & addtions happen!

Yardwork was on the agenda for both this past weekend & next. Got to take advantage of our limited free weekends before baseball kicks into gear. Thank goodness the weather was gorgeous! The kids asked to eat lunch outside yesterday.

Lorie – Can’t believe your trip is getting so close and congrats on the lead on Hynes, keeping fingers and toes crossed!!!:goodvibes Poor Erik, cutting three teeth in one week, yikes!:scared1:

Bethany – How is Anabelle feeling?

Lori – You should be very proud of Paul for going outside of his box and doing this for you, he’s a great guy.:thumbsup2 Continued prayers for mawmaw.

Mary – Glad y’all had a relaxing weekend! I’m trying my hardest to get Johnny off of his butt and finish some of the work on our house that’s been “pending” for a few years. Managed to get some painting done yesterday…..:rolleyes1

I’ve never had the calamari at Chang’s, have to try that next time!

Hey y'all!

So of course there is a roadblock with Hynes...she still has to be tested for being "gifted". This is going to sound really bad, but I really don't think she's gifted. Just a normal kid, and even then I wonder sometimes if she's normal. And I think it's ridiculous to test a 3 year old for being "gifted"- don't they usually even out by first grade and then you really know who's gifted and who's not? :confused3 DH thinks we should have her tested anyway because you never know. Funny though, in googling to find a child psychologist to do the testing, I found someone I used to be friends with in high school (we carpooled) that is a child psychologist who does gifted testing! Maybe that's a lead....:scratchin

Hey y'all,

It was a nice weekend. I scrubbed the patio table & planted some of my herbs, but didn't work too hard on cleaning up out there, with the upcoming backyard work there's not much point.

Mary, I have "The Hurt Locker" in from Netflix, didn't get to watch it this weekend, but will try to this week.

Lorie, I understand about the gifted stuff. Back in the days, when we had Angelina in Montessori pre-school everyone seemed to think their child was gifted. I myself used to go back & forth with "she's gifted - she has a learning disability"! There was ONE child in her school who was truly gifted & if you spoke to him for just a few minutes, it was easy to see the differences.

Since you "know" someone who does testing, I would follow through on it. The guidelines for being gifted are all over the place, so it's really worth checking into.

Terry, How is Kodi? Any other problems from the shots?

I , Lori AESW., presently of Clermont, Florida;), hereby promise to not commit crepe murder any more. HOWEVER, as a result of badly planned planting of previous owners, there will be 5 crepe mytles that are exempt from this promise b/c they are too close to the screen and house. Healthy pruning and clipping of branches over the roof are to be allowed.

Signed, Lori AESW.

I am looking forward to days of being showered by petals like a princess.:rotfl:
We DO have 23-24 crepe myrtles on our LOT.:scared1:

Lorie- praise be the normal kids! Even if she IS gifted, which would blessing, I think it is best to treat her like she is normal . Some moms get crazy when they find they have a gifted kid. I mean, they SHOULD be proud and mentioning it in pride is one thing, but pressuring thier kids with it is another. Anyways................

They have lots of buy one get one free grocery deals here. I am going to a workshop tonight about saving on groceries. It s at Panera Bread. I have never been there before.

I am also hunting down the marriage license so I can go get my drivers license.

I am not sure if I am ever gonna get back into school mode. We've done a bit- math and language arts, but looking forward to days where we are in a groove and doing everything we need to get done. We'll be schooling year round to catch up- even though we do that anyway. Just less time off in summer and December.

I was coming here to say the same thing, I'd check into it.

WOOO HOOO.. I love you Lori!!! God bless the trees!

Panera Bread, YUMMMY!! Shoot I wish we had those kind of deals here, what a neat class to go to .

Panera Bread! YUMMMMM Yay for the saved trees! Anyone want to figure out what I have in my yard, I am ready to kill it all and start over. Two years of neglect (sound familiar) and then two more years of ppl who don't know what to do by tried has our landscaping looking horrid. Granted, I could just kill MIL who planted IVY... what was she thinking???? It is taking over everything.

Lorie, as a mom to one, maybe two (jury is still out on the youngest) gifted child, all I can say is this... gifted is highly overrated! I hope she gets into Hynes for your peace of mind. And for the record, five years ago if you told me that one of my two oldest were gifted, guess which one... I would have picked the wrong one, so you never know. Doesn't hurt to find out. Well, Fletcher would disagree with me since he said being gifted is a curse, but that is only because he can be a very lazy somebody.:rolleyes1 (I mean who DOES their homework, and then hides it all over the house because it is too hard to unzip a backpack and drop it back in there??? I am still finding finished math homework from last year! :scared1:

I LOVE Panera!! We had them in Denver but when I moved to NYC in 2005 they did not have them there. I kept saying I wanted a Panera. Well, at some point they did open one in the Bronx and I went fairly often. My favorite is the smokehouse turkey panini with the broccoli cheddar soup. They have a "You Pick 2" menu where you can get half a sandwich and a bowl of soup together as a meal. It comes with an apple, French baguette piece, chips, or some other wheat bread piece. I always got the baguette piece and I'd dip it into that soup. YUM! :goodvibes Okay now I want to go. It's on my list of places to go when I'm in NYC. :rotfl:

Panera, pizza, and Cinnabon. :lmao:

Hi everyone, today was my 1st day at the new job..boy is it going to be an adjustment for me. I'm used to planning and organization well not this group..folks walk in all the time so you stop what you're working on to assist them then you forget what you were working on lol then you have all these darn meetings too.

I work 4 10's which means I get every Friday off!!! :woohoo:

Wow Lori that's ALOT of CM's....the previous owners mustve really liked them.

Lorie I will keep my fingers crossed for Sienna getting into Hynes.

Sheryl Kodi back to her sweet self again. :)

ok I'm very tired so ttyl

I had broccolli cheddar soup in a bread bowl- it was a LOT of bread on that plate, but i ate very little of it cuz i was soo full!

There seem to be quite a few around here- we must have the same taste b/c I was debating b/t the same panini and the soup.

Cara- post pics! Ya'll sound like us- not too into knowing what to do with plants huh?;) Time is something it needs that we don't wanna spend on it.

I ofter wonder just how much "gifted-ness" can be detected so early. Early speech, early reading - sure, but I also think some of that balances out as they mature. Definitely follow your lead! Maybe it's a sign!

Oh, and portocall, I had to laugh at your son's homework habits. I know of many who act similarly. At least he DOES his hw. Some of the gifted kids I knew growing up couldn't be bothered with it because they didn't see the point in reviewing something they already knew.
Regarding MIL's ivy -make Roundup your friend unless you have somebody dedicated to keep it in check! Ivy's pretty to look at in someone else's yard.

I hereby accept your promise, and grant you an exclusion ;)! TWO DOZEN crepes???? Jeez Louise! I do hope they're not of the type that get really big (like Natchez), or we'll have to reconsider that exclusion!

Panera Bread - I think the closest one I've seen is in a mall along I-10 headed to Gulfport / Biloxi / Mobile. I haven't been there, but I'm thinking it's a good thing based on the good reviews I've read!

Morning Y'all,

ANOTHER pretty day out there!:goodvibes
I wish I hadn't spent most of yesterday in the dr's office! I waited 3 hours!!! To get x-rays & have injection into my knee. Today I get to take DD to have her back & hip injected. Fun times. :sad2: I also need to get my patootie in gear, I just realized my brake sticker expired last month & I really need an oil change too.

I'm trying to figure out how to keep my ivy, but kill the cat's claw that's also growing in that spot. It's been pulled up twice & it's coming back again. It looked really pretty climbing up the brick last year. But then it got under the eaves of the house & grew into & out of the siding. Also got on the back door, I scrubbed it but it really got into the wood.

Hey y'all!

The gifted testing appointment is made (this Thursday ) and I nearly fainted when they told me the cost ($625 :scared1:), but fortunately my wellness account is going to cover it. I am going to be a nervous mess until Thursday...they evaluate us for an hour (DH is not thrilled) and then Sienna for 2-3 hours. This seems very extreme- I hope it is worth it!

Erik is crying- BBL!

Good luck Lorie- if it is meant to be , it'll all work our beautifully!

Ok, so I read Paul my promise and he said to make sure you all know his murder of the Birds of Paradise(Bird of Paradises?) was a crime of passion..................or manipulation!:goodvibes He needs a happy wife, whose happiness depends on as much a roachless existence as possible. So a bugman in place, less roach loving palmy type mostly dead Birds of Paradise, all foliage and bushes cut back from the house, and those plug in thingys all about the house- should just about be everything we can do in our power to live a hopeful roachless existence IN my house.

I am feeling better and on my way to Disney casting in a few. Finally.

Lori

Just popping in to say hi! I haven't read back so I'm seriously behind; my computer at home died, so I'm very limited in time and access. It will probably be that way for a while. The money I was gonna use for a computer is now gonna go to eye surgery for my dog. I'll try to stay in the loop, but we'll have to see how well that works!! Hugs to all!

Hey y'all. I've missed a couple of days.

Lorie- good luck with Sienn'as testing. If she turns out to be in the normal range, thank God because with Rie having learning disabilities, I'd take normal :). The kid's pictures in your signature are adorable:cloud9:

Rie is doing very well. I miss that girl like crazy. Happy to say that my depression with her being gone has lifted after reading her letters. She's getting a handle on her problems, thank God.

Lori, I'm glad you won't murder anymore crepe myrtles!:rotfl:

Sheryl, I hope you all start feeling better.

Serena, sorry you're having organizational problems in your new office. Hopefully since you're organized, the rest of the office will use you as a role model.

Terry – New jobs are such a huge adjustment, I will keep you in my prayers that the transition gets easier every day.

Sheryl – How is Angelina feeling?

Lorie – Good luck on the testing, that is a hefty price but I’m sure it will be well worth it!

Lauri – Sorry your computer died, really miss you around here and on the WFD thread.

Julie – I’m so glad to hear you’re feeling a bit better and that Rie is doing so well but I know how hard this is for all of you. Keeping y’all in my prayers.:grouphug:
