Metro New Orleans DISers - check in!!! - 09/2009

NOMA is having a 30 Hour Party to close out the Disney exhibit. I'm SO GLAD I went last Wednesday. It was not crowded at all and I really got to take it slow and soak it in! :goodvibes

http://www.nola.com/arts/index.ssf/2010/03/post_14.html

From the article:
To accommodate last-minute crowds, the City Park museum will remain open for 30 hours, from Saturday at 10 a.m. to Sunday at 5 p.m., with special musical performances including: The Loyola Jazz Band, Saturday from 5 to 7 p.m.; The Shannon Powell Trio, from 8 to 10 p.m.; Mia Borders, from 11 p.m. to 1 a.m.; DJ Quintron, Sunday from 2 a.m. to 5 a.m.; and Ellis Marsalis, from 2 to 4 p.m.

Just signing on to let you guys know that Kodi's reaction has subsided. She's been sleeping off and on since we got home earlier due to the Benadryl. I'm watching her like a HAWK though. ;)

OMG I just had the scare of my life...I picked up Kodi from the vet in which she was groomed and received about 4 booster shots. Well by the time we got home she was panting so loud, rubbing her head all over the carpet. So after picking her up and looking closer at her I realized my babies eyes were swelling and she was itching. Dang she was having an allergic reaction to the SHOTS.... I drove so fast back to the Vet where they gave her 2 shots, benadryl and something else. They are unsure of which vaccine she's allergic to because they were given together. Now her file is labeled as being allergic to these so she can receive the preventative meds before the vaccines are given or we can give them to her individually to see which she's allergic to. She's sleeping beside me now on the couch. I"M NOT LETTING HER OUT OF MY SIGHT TONIGHT!

Lori - wow that is way too much for your DH to do all by himself. I too would get rid of those Birds of Paradise.

Scary!!! I would be just like you!

We got a quote to help us get those things down and trim a LOT of other stuff. He had a hard time figuring out a price. He called me today with a quote of $900!! He said that he was tossing b/t $900 and $1300 and he went with the lower b/c we were new in the house and he knows how much that can cost. He would trim back ALL of the trees, pull up bushes around the house(African iris??) that are RIGHT up against the house-we can keep some and plant them further out. He's gonna cut back all those crepe myrtles(so they wouldn't bloom this year, but next). And take down those Bird of Paradise(which I will try to save some). There is SO much other work Paul has to deal with(and me, but while roaches are out there, I will not be) that we are considering it. We have no grass, it is all eaten up and we need to put down sod. The bugman suggested bahaia grass b/c it is easy to keep up and bugs don't like it as much. The other areas that have landscaping are so thick that we'll eventually need to take care of that too. But maybe next year. I don't see us spending much time out there until fall anyway. One thing at a time. This is gonna be much pricier than we thought. It is wierd to depend on having to pay for everything- at home we had our brothers and my dad that would come over and do it all with Paul in a heart beat. We are VERY overwhelmed.

Terry - I can imagine how scared you must have been, hope she's OK now.

I have an appt with a cardiologist two weeks from today.

Good. I still hope it is nothing worrisome and you get some peace about it. I know it is aggravating though when you KNOW you feel something and it can't be figured out

Lori- if possible, get a landscape guy to thin out the bird of paradise. Those things cost a fortune. He may be able to break up the clump and they could be used throughout your landscape. Also, it might be a nice ice breaker with the neighbors to offer them a clump. Sheryl is right- the BOP will be breathtaking when it blooms.

I know but I think they are past saving In that spot. They are pushing in on the screen and the pool guy says when they start to bloom they will rip the screen. He said the people were crazy to plant them THAT close to it. I am SURE they will be gorgeous, but they block the sun on the pool and are a HUGE mess right now.
I think taking neighbors some of the clippings is a great idea. I will ask the landscaping guy(who ALSO works as a landscaper for Disney F/T) to try to save me some IF we use him. I think we may.
Just pray our cars last another year!!!:goodvibes

My mawmaw is gonna go tonight or tomorrow I think. She is barely ever alone and today she was left for about an hour when she was sleeping. The nurse came in a found her on the floor by the door, alive. Semi alert, she told the nurse (after being asked why she was there) that her husband and sister(both gone already) called her. Then again, on the phone, she told my cousin repeatedly to hold on b/c they were all in her room. Her late husband, sister, daughter, cousin and aunt.
I REALLY think it is cool that they are calling her home. I hope I die peacefully, called by my loved ones, when I am old.

The girls and i packed a bag. Paul is very distraught about if he can come with us or not. I HATE leaving him here b/c he misses home just as much as the rest of us. He feels guilty, which I wish he wouldn't, and stressed over all these extra expenses. I offered to work, again, but he really wants me home- and he says Disney isn't a REAL job:wizard::laughing: if I DID go work there cuz I would run out of the door every time I had to go to work. I said all jobs should be like that. And tell the bug guy, the handyman and the landscaper that and I bet they will laugh at him. They all have side jobs which means they can't be paid all that well at Disney!

If he cannot come home, I am hoping to bring him back a king cake, some Abita Amber(found Purple Haze at World Market) and maybe even crawfish if I can. Oh and a Saints Superbowl shirt!

I hope he can swing coming though.

Lori

Lori, that is cool that your grandma is being called home.
As far as your yard/landscaping goes... I saw the pictures and let me say OMG. First, you want as much sun on your pool as possible. The fact that it is screened in will already make it colder by about 10 degrees than one that is out in the open. (I am a picky swimmer, only swim in 86 degrees or higher. When it is a screened pool, my swim season is June-Aug instead of April-Oct) Bermuda grass is prettier, but you might want to look into St. Augustine grass. It was cheaper than Bermuda, but has the added benefit that it grows out and up instead of up and up, which means more time between needing cut. My grandparents have Bermuda and my grandfather has his mowed twice a week during summer compared to my mom's biweekly cut. Especially if you are gonna be doing the mowing. You might also want to start with grass seeds which is much cheaper and see what you get. I will admit that the Bermuda is noticably softer if you go barefoot, but I doubt you will.

I also think you need therapy to get over your roach fear... a night of watching Joe's Apartment! The first time I saw that movie, I couldn't take it, but eventually the catchy tune won me over and now I can at least stand to see the movie. I can only imagine what it was like the first time you saw that awful terminex commercial that had ppl breaking their screens since it looked like there was a roach on the screen.

I am feeling you on the less is more in the landscaping department. I stink at yardwork.

Cara- I think I need therapy too. Really. My fears are way over the top. The landscape guy said, "you know they don't bite, right?" after seeing one on the ground, dying. He commented on my looking all around me after-b/c I was making sure none were gonna get on me. I have been like this since :
1. I took a bubble bath with one and ran screaming naked down the hall with 2 younger brothers laughing at me- I was like , 12, so it was traumatic:eek:
2. I saw a Tales from the Crypt where there were thousands of crawling roaches all over this woman- death by roaches.:eek:
3. they chase me- no matter when I see one, it flies at me or runs toward me- and I run away and leave

Paul does the yard work. He likes mowing and making it look nice. He's not over the top about it, but he likes it neat. Paul is just very overwhelmed with work and getting the house in some kind of order and we are just trying to get things to settle. He is planning on doing a lot himself, but we also do not have a flat bed or a way to haul all of this off to a dump site.
We just need more of a head start. After a lot of this is done- we'll be able to keep it under control ourselves.

We are looking forward to jumping in the pool soon as it is warm enough!
The girls ask every time it is warmer than 70 if they can go in:cutie:. So I let them put thier feet in by the step. It's gonna be a blast once warm enough!

Anyway- watching "Star struck" for the 3rd time with the kids- then going to clean the van for a probable trip home this week.

Lori

I must have run you all off with my bitterness. Sorry.:guilty:
Won't talk about it any more. You'd THINK I'd be thrilled, but I am not. It took me about 6 months to get happy about Dallas.I have never handled change very well-and here we are again.

Many things , so far, have not been in OUR plans.

Gotta get to the DMV soon as we can find our marriage license- cuz I need that to get my license. Then I can head to WDW.:woohoo:

All 3 Birds of Paradise are DOWN:banana:

or whatever they are. They will keep coming back. Clippings are gonna be tough b/c the base of these things were life 5 inches wide. The roots are deep.

Lori

Lori, vent away. You didn't scare anyone off. It was such a beautiful day that I am sure everyone was enjoying it. You know how we get around here... chatter chatter chatter, the silence for a while till we have more to talk about :lmao:

I saw the Lightning Thief today and it was fantastic. I needed something to take Harry Potter's place, and I think I found it. I did read the book already, before I knew a film was coming, however, I picked it up to reread today and am enjoying it more the second time around. Not that I didnt like it the first time.

You didn't run us off. Lord knows we've all vented at one time or another. I just played lazy today. Tim left to go to his nephew's wedding. I had to miss it because of the shingles, however, as soon as Tim left with his mom, I jumped in my vehicle. I had to get out of the house!!! The 4 walls were closing in on me. All I did was ride around for about 15 minutes and then came home. He's been telling me to rest and I have been but Jeez Louise, I was about to go nuts!I feel so sneaky:rotfl:

it was sooo good! Ash read the book and I am starting it tonight. I feel the same- something to look forward too after HP!
I also just read The Last Song. I did not like some of his other stories(movies) so i was a bit nervous about reading this one- but it was AWESOME. I am not a fan of The Notebook or "something to Remember" with the girl with leaukemia who dies- sweet story, but just not my cup O tea. I am looking forward to the movie. I let Ashton read it. She said it was her first "real" book as in it wasn't like HP or Percy Jackson or Narnia.
I wanna go see Alice in Wonderland though, but Princess and the Frog plays at FW at the end of this month- we may go see it!

Cool! I think I need to do the same. I am ITCHING to get our passes. Still haven't had a minute to get to casting, but I did apply online.

I just have been venting a while and you all probably think I am crazy b/c we all LOVE this place right?

Lori

Morning all!

Can't wait for it to warm up a bit more this morning, dying to get outside.

Lori, call your waste management company. Our will come do a special big trash pick and that includes BIG piles of yard debris. Maybe yours does the same.

Saw Alice in Wonderland last week.. I really enjoyed it.

Loved seeing all the yard pics, lord it looks like a mess, but gosh I would kill to get my hands on it haha! I do enjoy hacking stuff up. I just trimmed back our banana plants, granted they werent as big as your mess. I have lots more to do today. Hopefully get to nursery for some new plants.

Hugs and prayers for your Mamma and hopefully Paul can make the trip. I know Chad would be upset too if I would have to make the trip alone.

ARe the bugs really that much worse there than here?
and I am DYING you are cutting back the crepe myrtles lol.

Had to pop in and see if y'all have been to The Grand Isle seafood place at Harrah's? OMG, we fell in love with this cute little place! We had raw oysters and grilled drum fish that were outstanding and the mix of tourists and locals is great! Big pours of $5.00 chardonnay and excellent Bloody Mary's made it a "must do again" type of place!:cool1::thumbsup2

I will let you know about the bugs! A lady down the street came by yesterday. She is from Pumpkin Center!! She has been here 4 years and SHE said it didn't seem worse to her. But she also mentioned about the house being empty and unkempt for 2 years. But we have really ony seen 1 outside one in my bathroom and that was before we moved in. I have been told by many others, not just Cara, that it gets pretty bad. But I am not sure what they compare it too.

As far as the crepe myrtles, the neighbors say they will still bloom this year. They showed us how far they cut thiers back yearly and it always grows back. So, we'll see. I honestly think they won't grow back till next year, but the neighbors say i will be suprised. We'll see.

Yeah, Paul is torn about coming home or not. My mawmaw is still hanging on though! heck, you never know. All I know is hospice says it is soon and her whole disposition is different.

Sounds fun!

Gonna go make jambalaya for my hubby- who is out there again with his own shiny new chainsaw.

We cancelled the landscaper-thank goodness! Where as his price was decent to us(esp now), we have a list of things we still need to get for that money to go toward-like a mattress for Ashton. Right now she is in Haley's room. Haley has 2 single beds in her room.

Talk to you later- Lori

Just checking in...

I have the windows open and shorts on! :woohoo:

I am going through old WDW pamphlets and brochures. One map per park per trip= reasonable. Ten maps per park per trip = :scared1:

Someone (not on here) just posted their Facebook status as "Going to see Alison Wonderland.." It's Alice in Wonderland, isn't it?? :confused3

They will bloom this year, my neighbor hacks hers off every year and they always come back, just not in a big pretty tree, I prefer mine being big beautiful full size trees.

I call Crepe Murder LMAO
http://grumpygardener.southernliving.com/grumpy_gardener/2009/02/what-concerns-p.html
Here is an article about pruning them.... just know if I was there I would be chaining myself to your trees right about now!! HMMM.. maybe ill go do that to the neighbors today, I see the husband out there with his clippers. :rotfl2::rotfl2:

Only reason I ask about the bugs is we spent 10 nights camping at fort wilderness and I swear we didnt see anything anymore than what we have at home.

We are a pretty buggy place here too, so I guess I just can't imagine it is that much worse , which is prob why the pumpkin center lady doesnt think it is that bad.

How neat you have a neighbor from here!!

Hey y'all,

Lori, Prayers that your MawMaw being called home is an easy & peaceful move for her.:flower3:

I've been looking at your yard & pool pics. I can understand why it is a daunting & overwhelming. BUT I can also picture it cleaned up & green! It is goiing to be awesome! I'm totally jealous of your pretty, clean, blue & covered pool! Especially with the huge amounts of money we are getting ready to dump into our backyard! We are close to picking the pool guy, then I'll have to take some before, during & after pics.

Terry, I'm sorry that Kodi had a reaction. Glad that you noticed right away & was able to get it taken care of it quickly. I have to wonder if there is a new vaccine they are giving the pups that is causing these allergic reactions. Our family has always been dog people & these incidents y'all have had are the first time I've heard of it. :confused3

Kathy, No we haven't been there! Sounds like we need to go!

I love this weather so much! :cool1: It had me scrubbing my patio table yesterday, something I probably shouldn't have done, cause I had a painful night. I picked up some herbs & want to get those planted today.

I need to go get our garden area ready. Last year I didn't plant soon enough and it didn't yield a thing. Right now, the area just looks scary! But first, I need to get some laundry done. I will use and appreciate the extra hour of light today.

Hey y'all!

I realize I haven't posted in forever, but I have been on FB a bit. Some mini-dramas going on around here, but nothing major, just annoyances mostly. Plumbing issues (just in time for the tax refund of course!), minor work issues with DH, and Erik cut three teeth in one week! Yep, that was fun- little guy did not take that well at all! I still haven't found a part time job yet but I'm now thinking I should give up on that until after our vacation because I don't want to get hired and then tell them I'm leaving for two weeks in about a month. (Disney in 48 days! :cool1:)

I think I may have a lead in getting Sienna in Hynes next year, maybe, so keep your fingers and toes crossed- I need the good luck!

We planted our creoles and a couple of hibiscus. Now we're waiting for the big garden show in City Park on April 10-11 to get the rest of our plants. We're ready to do some gardening!:flower3:

Bethany- I just did the park map cleanout last year- I can't BELIEVE how much I had saved from my 13 (:rolleyes1) trips. I kept one set of maps from each trip, which seems like a lot but I actually wound up throwing two bags full of extra maps, brochures, etc. My first maps are from my first trip in 1987...I'll have to see if I can scan them in the computer. They are so much fun to look at!

Cara- I'm glad Logan's arm isn't broken. I feel bad for Fletcher too- poor guy.

Lori- I'm sorry to hear about your mawmaw, but she is going to a better place. My grandmother is 93, so I can relate. She's lived a long, fulfilling life, but I'm sure my dad and sister will be thrilled to see her again. I commented already about the plants and your critter on FB, but I agree with Sheryl that I can see the potential in your yard- it is going to be beautiful! It is just overwhelming for you to see this just yet. :flower3:

Serena- So about poor Kodi! Glad she is okay!

Kathy- I've never heard of that place, but it sounds good! Thanks for the tip!

I have been on 13 trips too! :rolleyes1 I don't appear to have any maps from the 87 or 97 Disneyland trips or the 92 WDW trip. The others I have several from. I'm still putzing through them. They were all a jumbled mess...likely from multiple moves.

Let's add this video to the list of reasons I'm glad I'm not where I was last year at this time. http://www.ny1.com/6-bronx-news-content/top_stories/115166/bronx-wall-collapse-injures-two I used to walk by that tree in the video to get to the bus or train...which means anytime I went just about anywhere I walked down that street.

I am tired. Forget one hour...this weekend is 25 hours shorter for me than last! (I took a 3 day weekend last weekend!) Add to that, Anabelle woke me up at 4am by throwing up on my foot in bed. 4am the new time I think. I got a little more sleep after that, but not much. Turns out she ate the arm off of one of her stuffed animals. (NOT Mr. Bingle!)
