Metro New Orleans DISers - check in!!! - 09/2009

ok, so I have an idea in my head to see a few of you all before our move, I know I mentioned it already, but.....:

***NOMA for Disney art(November, maybe week before Thanksgiving) I can organize this if I know exactly who wants to go if we can nail down a date. I have decided not to organize a field trip for our homeschool assoc for it- they need to many details that is too hard to do with not knowing how many and such. My girls and I will do this with or without Paul and also with you! I want to tell NOMA we are a bunch of Disney gals coming to visit and go at a time we can see the most. They are showing the classics on the big screen at some point(Cinderella, Snow White, etc) among other stuff.

I am game....not sure about Aly though especially if it's during the week, not sure about missing school.

It was one month yesterday I lost my furbaby and I thought about you. It still hurts but having vacation coming up will help, I'm sure, even if it will be a very different trip than ever before with my bum ankle.

 Fingers crossed that all goes well on the trip.

Hope Kyle is doing ok.

Peggy, This is going to be the trip of all trips! Kat & I will be meeting a bunch of dis-friends, lots of dining & wineing with them too.

Sounds exciting! :woohoo: Take lots of pics, ok?

Hi gang today has been super busy.

ALY MADE the cheerleading squad!!!!! :cheer2::cheer2::cheer2:

Congrats! :yay:

Congrats to Aly! Good Luck to Mom! It's gonna be a fun ride. Especially if she can keep up with gymnastics as well!

Lori - the house we bought, we actually were driving thru the neighborhood with our agent and she called their agent from the driveway! It was a family with a 5,3 and 1 yr old and they had just finished a birthday party for one of the older kids. She agreed to let us in the front door and apologized continually about the mess (it wasn't that messy). We loved it and put in an offer a few days later after a 2nd look. I guess what I'm saying is that when the right people come in, a little mess may not matter. And I'm hoping and praying that it will happen soon.
As far as NOMA - I work during the week, but I'm off Friday after Thanksgiving as well as the weekend.

i've got no news for ya'll, except to say that I'm already depressed that there's not another trip planned. We have the money, but it wouldn't leave us a big enough cusion that I'd be comfortable. Also, we need to make sure there will still be an "us" and "we" for the long term future. I don't want a looming Disney trip making that decision for me.

 I know how you feel. I feel good knowing we have a trip planned, even if its a year away.

Ankle update - My Dr. doesn't feel comfortable giving me an injection since the area is so close to the achilles so he's sending me to an orthopedist tomorrow morning. I'm starting to think the scooter will be my only option.:sad1:

:goodvibes At least the doctor was honest with you. Can you imagine if he had attempted it and messed up your achilles? :scared: I know you don't want to deal with the scooter, but at least you'll be at WDW with a bunch of friends! And trust me - they won't be worrying about those five pounds OR the scooter!

Snick is ok- no thyroid issues, still waiting on the blood thickness results.

Bethany- thanks for the heads up. It is seriously becoming more real now and after WDW i refused to show the house for the week after.

It looks SO good that i am considering asking the next people who do not put an offer on it to tell me what they didn't like.

It's like living in a hotel-no toohbrushes, soap, razors, garbage food, books- nothing is out-I am staging it like a pro. It is a PITA. i have 2 bins specially for new towels and one to put the stuff we use in it- then haul it to the van with all the dirty clothes, school books, mail, and stuff we accumulate on the table on any given day.

I'm glad Snickers does not have thyroid issues. I've never heard of giving dogs green beans.

I don't think that it would hurt to ask a buyer's opinion, especially if you word it the right way. Not sure what that would be though...

Ohhh, I remember those days. We moved to Colorado the summer before 8th grade and then back to Washington a month into 11th. We would do "Clutter Control" which meant putting EVERYTHING away. :headache: Fortunately, at that first Washington house we had an unfinished basement and it was okay to have boxes down there. At that move, my Dad went ahead and lived in Colorado while we stayed behind until the house sold (to finish out the school year).

When we moved from Colorado back to Washington, it happened really fast. Since we were already a month into school, we all moved up together before the house sold so we could transfer earlier in the school year. We took what fit in the minivan and drove up, leaving everything else behind (but oh so TIDY...no cleaning!!) and we lived in a furnished apartment for two months until the house sold and my mom flew down to supervise the moving company.

As for renting vs buying in Houston...that's a tough one. Since you intend for the move to be temporary, I think it'd be easier and likely cheaper (at least in the long run) to rent. Also, if I recall correctly, property taxes in TX are very high because they don't have some other tax (income?). Also, renter's insurance is usually quite cheap.

I've missed you guys! Hope everyone here is doing great. :grouphug:

I'll be in your neck of the woods real soon. And.... I made it thru the day and the Gator fans were pretty nice about it. :rotfl:

I've missed you too! I was going to ask you about the Gator fans. :rotfl:
We've been getting together as a (partial) group fairly often. Maybe we can plan a little something while you're down here. Something cheap LOL with all the holidays coming up and a lot of WDW trips. :lmao:

I know I just got back, but I'm still jealous of ya'll getting ready to go.

bethany - how'd anabelle do with her shot?

i've got no news for ya'll, except to say that I'm already depressed that there's not another trip planned. We have the money, but it wouldn't leave us a big enough cusion that I'd be comfortable. Also, we need to make sure there will still be an "us" and "we" for the long term future. I don't want a looming Disney trip making that decision for me.

I'm a weebit jealous too!

She didn't react to this one! :yay:

 I hear you on the money. I also have enough money to take a trip, but if I used it, then I would have a smaller savings account. At this point, I'm not willing to do that.

I'm trying to make the savings account BIGGER...like, a LOT bigger, so we can get a house at some point. It will be awhile, especially because I hear now they want 20% down payments. :headache: And you can't just have a 20% down payment. You also should have that much or more in an emergency fund. It looks impossible! So basically, you need 40-50% of the house price in liquid savings to be truly financially stable enough for a house?!?

ok, so I have an idea in my head to see a few of you all before our move, I know I mentioned it already, but.....:

Just to clarify, before we move to stinkin Texas-my heart is HOME and always will be:sad1:. This is getting tooooo real. Still not sure if renting would be a good thing for us.

I'd LOVE to go to that with this group! It'd have to be in the evening if it is a weekday up through Nov 20.

Did you also want to do another painting? Or pottery?

I think you've clarified that before. ;) I'd love to tell you it will get easier after you move like it did for me, but I can't. You don't want to move, I did. I already had friends before I moved down :grouphug:, I don't know if you do over there. I CAN tell you that it will all be okay!

Serena - GREAT news for Aly!! :cheer2:

I found out I might not get the money owed to me by NYC Dept of Ed until 26 months after I have resigned. Yes, you read that correctly. I wonder if I've officially resigned yet. :rolleyes1

Remind me not to wait this long between posts next time!

I'm glad Snickers does not have thyroid issues. I've never heard of giving dogs green beans.

I thought the vet was a little nuts when he first suggested it. But it worked, and that's what matters. I'm tempted to try it myself!

26 months!?! After a burst of involuntary laughter, I sit here shaking my head. Will they pay you interest? And when will you know if you have resigned?

I am sitting here sick to my stomach and shell-shocked. Kyle called earlier and told us that last night after he'd dropped Mariah off at her dorm he was back in his apartment complex parking lot talking with her on the phone before heading up to the apartment and he heard some crashing noises. Before he could even realize what was going on his driver side window was being bashed in while he was sitting in the car. He had glass everywhere and cuts on his face. Some idiot was on a drunken rampage smashing in random car windows. Long story short, he's OK, the idiot was caught, thank God the police were there quickly.:sad1:

Glad Kyle is OK!

Did I tell you he got to rat poison when I was in Foley with my mom, when Paul was showing the house. Paul put them in the garage when it was raining and he couldn't put them outside. We had some OLD rat poison out there apparently b/c Snickers then brought the pouch to Paul, who was on the phone with me telling me about the showing. I freaked and knew he'd need Vit K immediately b/c rat poison IS coumadin in high quantities and makes you bleed from the inside and then it is too late.

They brought him in and $75 later after induced vomiting(peroxide), a shot of Vit K and scrip for Vit K for 2 weeks-and he was okay-shewww! Today he went for his follow up-check his blood thickness(CPK?) and we find out results Monday. He definitely had it in his tummy and hopefully not further down. he is a brave puppy and gave us NOT a lick of trouble taking his meds plain- and I KNOW vit K is NASTY. He is the best dog. Hershey would have SO given us issues. Todays labs , plus some was $125-so it was a $200 issue.
wow glad your doggie is ok too!

I am going to miss you so! but glad we are all here to stay in touch :) Grayce's 10th birthday is 11/22. We would love to go = I am also off that Friday and Saturday after Thanksgiving

we are maybe going to look into the Shrine Circus which is the week fo Thanksgiving as a party for Grayce's birthday. if we can do it, you gals and kids (and big men kids) are invited too!

Hi gang today has been super busy.

ALY MADE the cheerleading squad!!!!! :cheer2::cheer2::cheer2: She is so excited. Thank you all for all of your good thoughts. :) I told her she may have to chose between gymnastics and cheerleading and she looked at me as though I had 3 heads. :rotfl2:

YAY ALY!!!

and Bethany - NY never ceases to amaze me...26 months :scared1:

IMHO and Paul's too-NOT true, my friend- you can get an FHA loan with as little as 3.5% -5% down with good credit. I looked at apt prices and we can get a house for the same or less as our monthly note, even after thier exhorbitant (sp?)property taxes and PMI. After our current home loan is paid off, we will be pretty much starting from scratch again. We have enough to put down 10%-15%, but we won't be-besides, the market is a buyers market and it will eventually go back up and even off- buying a home now is very smart b/c you can get a good deal on a home. We decided that we are going to put some cash aside for a car- which will be needed in the near future and we wanna get a good used car and be able to NOT have a note.

I WOULD agree that it is SMART to have a little padding in your savings once you have a house for upkeep!

Oh and NOMA is closed on Mon and Tues- so any other time is fine. Opening day is the 18th- if it is opened the day after Thanksgiving, that may be an option! Unless we have black friday shoppers- but I avoid that at all costs!

Sounds great but this is either the week you plan to go (Thanksgiving)we'll be at WDW or the week before that which will be cuckoo for cocoa puffs busy.

Kat, how's your ankle?

Lori

I think if I knew I was only going to be in a place for 2 years, I'd still want to rent just so I wouldn't have to deal with the buying/selling process.

3.5%-5% would be awesome. We only have that right now for really low end houses...not sure I want some of what I've seen in that price range. :scared: I would have but paid for a masters degree out of pocket, moved, and now we have a car loan. Also, my DH is still not working and we are tight on the one income. :headache:

Somebody was telling me, and I forget who it was and I hope they are wrong, that even with good credit they are making people have 20%. The banks aren't accepting 10% anymore. :confused3 I haven't really looked into it just because we aren't even close to ready. I was thinking maybe next year but it's looking more like 5 years away if she is right. If you are right then maybe 18 months. But either way, we'll likely have missed the buyer's market. :headache:

I can't do a weekday unless it would be the Wednesday before Thanksgiving. Black Friday won't work for me...my family will be here.

As for the sick day payout, the contract says three equal payments 2 months, 14 months, and 26 months out. The school secretary said she forwarded the last version of the letter to the person that was supposed to get it. I dated it August 31, just like all the others, so two months SHOULD be 10/31. I think its ridiculous. No, I'm pretty sure they will NOT pay interest, and I only have 7 days they are paying me...and I could really use that money NOW because I'm really hoping that 14 and 26 months from now my DH has a job!

The other money they owe me is a grant. I got the first email about this back in about January. They are STILL processing the paperwork. This one is lump sum, assuming I'm worthy enough in their minds to get it. :headache: Last year, I found out around September I was getting it, and got the money something like the day before I came down here (I flew down on 10/17). :headache: I should be able to roll over the pension money too....sounds like another headache and Paperwork Fiesta in the making. :headache:

Have a good day everybody. I just made myself a bit grouchy with this post. :headache: Hopefully my vent didn't make anyone else grouchy. :sad2: I haven't had a good long vent in a while.

Peggy – Kyle is OK. Poor kid has to deal with trying to get his window replaced when he should be devoting all of his time to studying for mid-term exams.:sad2:

Lori – I agree with Lauri, when the right people come along a bit of a mess won’t matter! I, too, avoid shopping on Black Friday. I think that would be a great day!

Bethany – That NYC Dept of Ed is a freaking joke! UNBELIEVABLE!!!! Don’t ever apologize to us for venting my friend.

Julie – Ankle is no better. I have a 9:00 appt with the orthopedist, praying for a miracle.

Morning Y'all,

Kathy, I'm praying for you!

Bethany, To think that your NY friends were telling you that you were crazy to move down here! :upsidedow

Lori, I'd like to do the museum. I can do the week of Thanksgiving with Alexis or the week before but without her.

Lori, I hate to tell you but that's correct they are requiring 20 % down right now. A friend of DD's was buying a house went all the way through the process then at the last minute, the bank told her that NO they would not accept the 1st time home-buyer credit towards the downpayment. Then they added that she also needed the estimated amount of a full year of homeowner's insurance deposited also. I think it's fine that they have tightened up the loan requirments, but dang tell people in the beginnning of the process just what those requirements are!!

Terry, YAY!!!!! :yay::cheer2: Congratulations Aly! I'm happy for her, now prayers that you both can handle it all. :flower3:

WooHoo! Ortho did X-rays, all negative. The bursa sac is inflamed so he gave me a cortisone shot and says I should be good to go on Saturday!!!:yay:

Thank you-

Oh and NOMA is closed on Mon and Tues- so any other time is fine. Opening day is the 18th- if it is opened the day after Thanksgiving, that may be an option! Unless we have black friday shoppers- but I avoid that at all costs!

Lori

Hi Lori, the NOMA website has the opening date as Nov. 15th. Hopefully, this is correct because I'm thinking about taking our little travel group on either the 15th or the 16th.

November 15, 2009 - March 14, 2010
Dreams Come True
Art of the Classic Fairy Tales from the Walt Disney Studio
(organized by NOMA) (EWF Galleries)

I am finally all caught up with reading these 25 pages. This may be a very long post with a lot of quotes!!!

Kathy - sorry about the ankle stuff. I had to have an ecv at WDW in 2006 when I had aspiration pneumonia (no fever or infection) for about 8-10 months. It was a lifesaver.

Reggie wouldn't keep still.

peke.jpg
What a cutie pie!

Sheryl - can't believe all that Alexis has been through with that appendix. I had mine out as an emergency at WDW and went to CP two nights later.

. She admitted to me she didn't have a hotdog b/c they looked scary(the red ones-blech, cough cough blech).....
In my brothers defense(???)- it was about the bottom line- he paid 19 CENTS a pack!!!
I hate the sight of those RED hot dogs. One thing I do not mind about my dad not living here is the yucky food he used to bring home because it was so cheap.

I’ve had fraudulent charges on both my debit and credit cards many times and it is a royal pain in the butt. But I can’t imagine how much more difficult this will be since it involves family.
That has just happened with an ex-friend of mine - hate to say ex but she has gone totally out of control. Oxycontin and alcohol. Now it turns out she has had credit issued in her daughter's name and run it up. I can't imagine someone doing that to their own child - who is a single mom with not a lot of money.

And this decision will be better for his health as well (the stress was really getting to him).
I had a couple of jobs that were just miserable because of the stress. Later in my career I used to tell people that I only had one career objective - "Not to hate to go to work in the morning".

Had a huge scare this afternoon....Johnny's blood pressure was 200/110, he started on a new bp med this week. He had to leave work and go to the Dr and thank God it was a medication issue, he didn't follow the Dr's directions....Whewwwwwww, big scare.:guilty:
Good news is the BP meds work almost immediately.

Oh no!:headache: I am gonna miss my bugman!!:rolleyes1
I love my bugman. We tried to do it ourselves for a while - didn't work. I hate those big critters.

Just call the phone number on the summons. They can tell you what you need to do. If there's no number, call the courthouse. It's been my experience that the women who work there know at least as much as the lawyers and more than the judges sometimes.

Oh and I didn't want to post this but my dermatologist thought that I might have skin cancer but I don't!!! She lasered about 40 spots on my face. I thought they were freckles but she said they were precancerous. My face looks like it was peppered with buckshot:rotfl:. Wonder if it will take out a few wrinkles?:) That would be welcome lagniappe.

When I got back to New Orleans in Sept. for a couple of days to hurricane proof my place I found a letter that I was supposed to use for jury duty in Arkansas. I went down and registered in May. I was supposed to call in every Wednesday for 6 weeks. I never did it - forgot all about it. Wonder if there is a warrant out for me?

I had laser treatments for broken veins on my face about 10 years ago. It looked like I had about 200 portwine stains the size of a pencil eraser on my face. It was awful - but it worked.

Bethany, :lmao: Girl you are too funny! NOW you understand the need for cool air!
It is cold here in Arkansas - but I have the temp set at 65. So nice after my dad keeping it at 85!
When I read about your brother, I want to slap him! Shame on him:mad:.
Lots of people have that reaction to him. I'd rather at least try to be a nice person than to be so rich and miserable.

Bethany- Let me warn you about the weather here....it will be hot as hell forever, with people saying "when is it going to get cooler already???!!" and them BAM!! it is cold, literally overnight. It is like fall runs past us in a brief minute or two. You wake up saying "damn, I missed fall again this year! Maybe I'll see it next year...."
So true!

That is just so awful. I that when I was in Austin just returning from a 6th street restaurant. We saw a young man on the sidewalk with blood all over his shirt. He was being helped - but it made me think of what might have happened to Kyle.

Just an FYI...those little glass pieces are pesky. He'll be finding them for years, even after you THINK you've cleaned them all out. :headache: The wind blew out two of my car windows once (no one was in the car at the time) and I was finding glass crumbs about four years later.
My sister went through a windshield 25 years ago, and she still has tiny pieces of glass that come up on her face every few years!

Hi gang today has been super busy.

ALY MADE the cheerleading squad!!!!!
Great news!

Paul has been talking with the relocation specialist that is assigned to us and he is pretty adamant that he is correct about our situation. I read him your responses and he agrees that what Sheryl said is correct, but that is for a specific situation of someone try to take advantage of the tax credit.

We wouldn't be using 1 1st time home buyer credit- Paul already started the ball rolling and the mortgage broker(where he works) told us all we needed for an FHA loan was 3.5-5% down. And that is correct, you cannot use that 1st time home buyer credit toward your down payment. It is a tax credit on next years taxes. And it is a normal occurence to pay 1 years worth of insurance at closing. With homeowners you have to pay a year ahead which is why you pay it at closing and have it escrowed from you monthly payments from the start so you have it for year 2 and so on.

I know we will get a discount on our percentage rate from the bank he works for, and they pay our closing fees on a house we buy(not sell).

We'll see and I promise to let you know how it goes and if we were wrong!(Or if HE was wrong:rolleyes1;))

I will call NOMA about the day after Thanksgiving

Oh, Snickers labs came back and he needs more vit K and more labs in a couple weeks. His blood is still kinda thin. They do not seem to be worried but obviously it was in his system pretty good. he is acting fine.:woohoo:

I just wish we KNEW if we'd only be there a couple years- we have NO idea what the future may hold! He has told them multiple times that our wish is to be SE- LA to FLA- so they know and other than that we need to accept the move and see what happens.

Hey all, I don't have time to read back, but I did see that Aly made the cheerleading squad! Way to go Aly!!!

Since Logan's incident, all has been pretty calm around here. Fletcher got sick on Sunday, sore throat, chills, fever, stomach ache... thought we were gonna spend our Columbus Day holiday at the doctor but when I got up at the crack of dawn to check on him, he was playing the Wii like nothing happened. I figured it was safer to keep him home than bring him to the doctor with all that is going around. So glad that Spencer isn't due for any vaccinations this year, I don't think I am doing any well visits for a while.

Kid's recoveries are amazing! It's great that Fletcher is feeling better.

Morning!!!!! Rie goes back to school today. Fall Break is over. 35 days 'til our trip. I have to print out journals, make transfers for the hoodies, etc.

Yesterday, I went to CATOS and there were the cutest warm ups-zebra and giraffe jackets with solid black pants and then a black argyle zip up jacket, so these are going in my suitcase along with my knit jeans for the WDW trip.

Have y'all tried the knit jeans from Coldwater Creek? They are fabulous and very flattering.

Hope y'all have a great day:cutie:.
