Metro New Orleans DISers - check in!!! - 03/2009

Terry - have a great time. I am SO jealous and SO ready for my trip.

Lori - sounds like you're seeing some good places. I'm hopeful you can find a nice place that won't feel too far from home. Just make sure to stock up on fluer de lis stuff before you move - gaint flag/banner for the yard, maybe a fleur de lis-shaped door knocker and door bell, the whole kitchen set - oven mits, apron, salt and pepper shakers, spoon rest! :)

Jack - Poor Jack. I feel for him. I SUFFERED from strept throat when I was younger. It was almost chronic. I got it twice a year like clockwork. And it was always severe. I'm have sympathy throat pains now. Hope he feels better soon.

minkydog - have you considered a haunted tour? Those are pretty cool. I know more about uptown than than the quarter, but I've never eaten anywhere on Magazine St. that WASN'T good. And then you could go to the zoo. The Insectarium is new too. If you're going to cafe du monde you're already going to the best place :)

Did someone say pedi fours????? :)

Thanks for the suggestion. We haven't really explored the haunted tours because all the ones I've found so far require too much walking. We have some mobility issues and walking around for a couple hours at dusk on the (uneven) streets of New Orleans might be risky business. Is there a good riding haunted tour you could suggest?

Mind if I crash your thread for a moment? :hippie:

I had a major midlife crisis this year(I'm 52) and my sister(51) is headed the same way. The only treatment is a road trip to New Orleans.:rotfl:

We grew up in Pascagoula, MS, and Mobile, AL, so we have been to NOLA before. But this is just going to be a sisters trip, no kids, so we need some help. We'll be there Jun 8-11.

We're staying in the French Quarter and we already know we'll be going to Cafe du Monde, Jackson Square, the riverwalk, a cooking class, Saint Louis Cathedral, etc. We're not big drinkers, but I could be talked into a cocktail or two.

So if we were your out of town family, what would you suggest? We'd like to take a slowboat swamp tour. Not sure about the City tour though--I don't particularly want to go to the Katrina stuff. I've seen enough of that. Are there any life music venues that we MUST SEE? And where in the heck is the best authentic New Orleans food. I am NOT eating at Bubba Gumps again(DDs favorite :sad2:)

Help me out, sistas! I want this trip to be refreshment for two beaten down souls.:flower3:
welcome! and you're not a crasher - welcome!! I am so glad you gals are coming down here. there may be some swampboat tours that leave from downtown new orleans. all i know of offhand is the one in Lafitte. many of them are airboats which to me are somewhat scary....

bourbon at night has just some cool venues - there are so many in the paper every night it is hard to say which ones. Mulates has great cajun music; House of Blues has great acts but not sure what would be there on your dates. as for food - gosh - there is no such place as bad food in NOLA! across from Harrah's there is a place owned by the Big RIver Grille co from the Boardwalk at Epcot in Disney...Mother's has great poboys. I love a place called Cafe Reconcile on Oretha Castle Haley - not walkable but good home cooked/reasonably priced food. I eat there whenever I have to go in town for work. Antoine's, Ralph and Kacoos, Deanies all in the quarter are good.

Aquarium is nice...Insectarium is ok but I wouldn't necessarily go unless part of a ticket. Where'sPiglet did the NOLA thing when she came down and might have better suggestions. You can cruise down to the Zoo from the Aquarium and back again... or take the Creole Queen for a lunch/dinner cruise. OH Blaine Kern's Mardi Gras World is now on the Eastbank and is neat and not too much $$ - you get to look at actual floats (and eat some king cake)

a friend of mine does the haunted tours in the garden district but they are definitely walking ones. if you have the ability to get a scooter that might work. I know they are plentiful in Orlando; not sure about here but let me know and I will check some of my vendors to see if they rent...

hope that gives you some ideas!

minkydog, You are hardly a crasher! For something truly N'awlins within walking distance of the quarter is Cafe Mesparros on Camp.

For really good New Orleans music & good burgers head to Snug Harbor on Frechmen street!

Let us know if you need some friends to join you!

Morning all!

My sweet boy is feeling good today and the impetigo is looking so much better.
Thank you for all the get well wishes. I let him read them all.

Welcome minkydog!!! Hope you enjoy your trip to NOLA! The girls gave you some great recommendations.

I am packing our bags today.. we are running away to Westwego for a few days for a little family vacation :rotfl: :rotfl:.
Its not as bad as it sounds haha.. the state park is really really nice. Chad booked a cabin as a surprise for us, and we will spend a few days on the water. Im actually really excited. He knew I couldnt stay around town much longer without losing my mind and we arent going to Destin till end of July . Sweet boy !

Hope you all have a great day!

Minkydog- welcome! We spend more than enough time in your state or passing through- ask away. Sounds like it will be a fun girl getaway!

DD9 called us last night begging us to come home-my overly emotional child was upset b/c her granny raised her voice to her:scared1: to not hide the toothpaste from her sister at 11pm!! LOL

Anyway- we are heading to Kingwood today to see what some friends have said about this area, but it is more NE and above Lake Houston, which DH is not crazy about-we'll see.

Then HOME!!

The girls were telling us yesterday that we should be visiting home at least 8 to 9 times per year-b/c we have 7 neices and nephews who will have a birthday party we cannot miss, plus Christmas and summer drama camp at church.:thumbsup2 The new friends they make can have them any other time, they stated. Sounds good to me!

WE are gettng ready to head home after seeing a couple more places though-this has been a productive trip. NOW we gotta sell our home-ugh!

Lori

Omg I am having a DAY! Ohhhh it must be payback for having a mellow Tuesday.

I am hoping my internet is working at home so I can relax and catch up tonight. The last month or so, my internet has been very spotty.

Hi everybody!!! WOW! A thread for New Orleans area Dissers!!! I grew up in Marrero (went to Immaculate Conception School & Immaculata High); and moved to the Northshore about 14 years ago. I live in Bush, which is right outside of Covington (very close to the House of Seafood - most people know the House of Seafood buffet).

Anyway, I babysit for the Murphy quads on Saturdays. They are beautiful babies!!!! We have so much fun with them!!! Their dad (and mom) are great people - so sweet!!!! If you can help, PLEASE do! And please keep Mat in your prayers!!!!

Thanks!

I haven't had the time to read back... I kinda gave up when I would write up these long replies, push submit and my computer would shut down. I don't know that it won't do that this time, but a girl can hope.

Summer vacation starts around noon tomorrow, and not a single minute too soon I will tell you that. It has been a horrible year all around, starting with Gustav (and what a hurricane that sparks an evacuation and emergency food stamps means to our family for months) and just didn't seem to get any better.

I hope that everyone is doing okay, if this works I will read back tomorrow and comment away.

Welcome! I didn't get to read the DIS thread. Why was it deleted? I haven't read the whole story on the family yet, but what I've read so far it seems this family could use our support and prayers.:grouphug:

HI MOMMY!! :] I finally meet up with you on a thread!! I am so glad to see all these people praying for Mat!!

Anyone who wants more info on the family can go to www.murphyquads.com AND thank you again!!

Hi Tigerkat!!! My friend Laura grew up in Terrytown and lived on Euclid St, til she moved to Slidell. My DH's friend, Kenny, also grew up in Terrytown on Dunkirk.

I think the thread had information from either Tom Fitzmorris' site or nola.com, and it mentioned that a fund has been set up for the family. I guess that's why it was removed????

But yes, the family can definitely use our help and our prayers!!!!!

Welcome Magic2000! I live in Marrero, my DD graduated from IHS.

Jenny, Glad Jack is better! Have fun in Westwego! The cabins do look nice. There is a free concert at the Westwego Market tomorrow night, the band is 5 finger discount :confused3, I don't know what kind of music that is, but I can find out. They'll have food vendors out there too.

I have to say I am enjoying the heck out of summer so far! Alexis is so much more pleasant in the morning, when I don't have to wake her up for school. ;)

Lorie, I'm marinating a pork roast in your Criola. I think I'll smoke it on the grill sometime this weekend.

Lori, Glad the trip is going well, safe ride home!

Is anyone having trouble with the DIS running super slow? It's hanging up when I try to post.

Thanks, ya'll! You've given me some good ideas. We love New Orleans--my kids are jealous green that my sister & I are going and leaving them behind. I've been hearing about it all week. Guess i better bring them back some beignets, or I'll be in the Chateau Chien.

I'm having a lot of trouble with the DIS. Yesterday, I couldn't get to my freebies post! :mad:Hopefully, everything gets smoothed over fast!!

Like Magic2000, I am from Marrero, moved to Bush 14 years ago. ((I'm her daughter)) & now my husband & I live in Hammond! :] Anybody from the Hammond area? Any SLU lions??:yay:

Awww...thanks Kristina. :goodvibes What I got was the ticket called Audubon Experience and it's admission to the IMAX, Zoo, Aquarium, and Insectarium. You get a discount for buying it all together.

As for other NOLA ideas, I have none. Unless you are interested in checking out the various Targets and Wal-Marts. :lmao: Somehow I don't think that is on your list?

I'm having the WORST time getting up in the morning. Every morning, I have these weird dreams where in the dream, there's some scenario (it varies daily) where I'm being told in the dream that the alarm is NOT to wake me up. It's for some other reason. I am SO CONFUSED when I'm waking up...I don't know if I'm supposed to be getting up or not. :confused3:rotfl:

We had the Dance Festival this afternoon. The kids were nuts all day...so excited. This morning one of my kids got real violent and I had to deal with that. :headache: 21 more days... but who's counting? :rolleyes1
