First, a little background. I am not a runner. Maybe it's the times when I was a kid and had PE and could not keep up with the other kids during our 30 minute runs, maybe it's the side aches I sometimes get or the alleric reaction I have when I run outside (of course Seattle is usually cold and has a lot of pollen).
There is a treadmill in the apartment's communal fitness center and I have been eyeing it woefully each time I am on the elliptical machine. One day, I decided I'd try to conquer it. I got this workout from Self.com which begins slowly with about 3.5 to 4.5 mph and finally works up to 7-7.5 mph and 5-5.5 mph recovery. I'd do fine until the 7 mph part where my heart rate would spike and I'd have to slow down. I was always so disappointed that I'd work up to the pace, then I couldn't even complete it.
Anyway, I put it on hold to work out everyday with the Biggest Loser CardioMax and PowerSculpt which is pretty intense, but I'm on level 1 and since I've been doing it everyday, I can see a difference.
Well yesterday I ate a few things I wasn't proud of (a 3 Muskateer's Bar and some yogurt pretzels
), so I decided to add a second workout to that day. I mustered up my courage to get on that treadmill and pushed myself hard. When the 7 mph part came up, I just pushed myself through it and guess what? No 190 bpm heart rate where I would have to stop and I WAS ABLE TO COMPLETE IT! I can't say it was easy, but it was definately on my level. I was so proud of myself last night I was gleaming and when I got on the scale this morning, I noticed I didn't gain a pound from the candy breakdown yesterday afternoon.
