Message in a bottle (yeah)

remember that's just my opinion. Others may feel differently. Personally I would love to try this to see what happens, but I also feel that it's littering and I'm against that:)

Disney at the very least request that NOTHING be thrown overboard.

There might even be official rules or laws banning the same thing.

I would. If you can't from the ship, then do it from one of the beaches in a port. My daughter did this while visiting an island last spring break. She included her first name only and as an address we used her school. A couple of months later a letter arrived at her elementary school for her citing the coordinates of where the bottle had been found, and taking account the winds and water patterns where that gentleman thought it might next land. On her note she asked if anyone found the bottle to send her a message and date when they found it and send it back out to sea. We hope to hear again someday.

So yes, I'd chuck it over the side. If that was not permitted, I would sent it out to sea some other way. Wha a great learning lesson and an adventure too!

Inevitably someone is going to read this post and have a near heart attack and feel the need to post a thesis on the impact of bottle messages on the environment and various oceanic eco systems. They will then rant about "how is it a great learning lesson for you kid if you are teaching them to litter"...yada, yada, yada...

So before it gets ugly (because, let's face it, that's not unheard of on these boards), I'll pose the question that was always posed to me growing up...

"What if everyone did that?"

Just food for thought. I know not everyone does.

Keep in mind, I met my husband via a message in a bottle that was cast into the ocean during a childhood trip he took to the Jersey Shore so I'm really looking at this from both sides.

Oops, I forgot. I actually met my husband in college.

Is it okay to chuck one off the ship? pirate:

don't thnk so....you might get fined.

worst part of it....think of the trend you'll start for years and years to come. then those bottles become a littering problem. IMHO.

My question is this: where do you find a bottle that has an cap that can be opened and closed again with ease?? What is normally used? A ketchup bottle??? :confused3

Actually, when we cruised last Oct. 31, I ordered a welcome/birthday basket for my DS9 from Shirley, and included in it was a "message in a bottle" that you are supposed to put your name/address or whatever in and toss into the water. We didn't do it, but were thinking about it next cruise?? :confused3

I would think that just a regular 20oz plastic pop bottle would work.

I told you! :rotfl2:

Ooppsss....

When we sailed in January, I ordered the baskets from Shirley with the messge bottles in them and my kids wrote a note with my husband's work address and sealed it up and tossed them overboard. They love the thought that they may someday hear back from some remote place. I didn't realize that we were breaking any rules and we definately didn't try to hide what we were doing. I even took pictures!! Now that I know there is a rule, we won't do it again. I just wonder if it is in fact a DCL policy, why Shirley puts them in her cruise baskets. She specifically told us not to put our home address due to dangers to the kids but I think she would have told us if DCL prohibited this. Maybe it's not a rule??

At the very least I can specifically remember the on-board info channel "What's A Float?" requesting that you not throw anything overboard.

Perhaps Shirley should not be including those "bottles" in the baskets.
