I also think that it's more because the bloggers and other Disney fan sites will want to go the first night and record what's going on. (that is the main reason why I'm going - to share experiences for the DIS and DIS Unplugged Facebook page).

Huh...no wait now. Unless you had your heart set on 12/9 you did not need to buy tickets right at 9 AM, it seems. Still glad I did, it's a new event, who knew what the demand would be?
