ok i know some areas (like my town) have laws about how many cats you can have. My aunts ex is making a big deal and claming that he heard its only 2. My aunt lives in a huge house with lots of room. Shes got 4 cats, two are hers, one belongs to her DD8, and one to DD9. The house never smells and there spoiled rotten (both cats and kids).
SO I know theres some law minded people on here. can anyone find me proof of the cat laws in menominee michigan? TIA and can we keep this from turning into a how many cats is too many argument?

I don't know about Michigan but most places do have pet limit laws. Ours is 2 or 3 but no one pays attention. At one point, we had a dog and 7 cats. We are down to 5 cats, no dog.:guilty: But, the cats always stay indoors, so it's not like they're running around messing up the neighborhood.

These laws are usually put in place to discourage animal neglect and illegal breeding and kennel businesses. The only thing I found from a city council meeting in Menominee say this: "Kennel: Any premises wherein any person engages in the business of boarding, breeding, buying, letting for hire, training for a fee, or selling dogs or cats in numbers in excess of three (3)."

This, and a lot of other info can be found here:CITY OF MENOMINEE, MICHIGAN about half way down the page, under ANIMAL CONTROL ORDINANCE. I didn't see anything about pet limits, but some strict licensing and spay/neuter rules for cats that have outdoor access.

I suppose this could be misinterpreted as not being allowed to own more than 3 animals, but it specifically states the part I bolded.

Why does your Aunt's ex care about this?

Hes trying to make her look bad and screw her over. hes a messed up man. ive contacted the humane society in the city and also contacted the mayor (personal freind)

He's going to have to go a lot farther than, "Uh, she has 4 cats", to make her look bad. Talk about grasping at straws!! I think he'll be seen for the nutter he apparently is! LOL!

I dont get what the issue is either, hes just a nut job but now my aunts worried, SO worried she sent one of the kids cats to visit grandma! what crap. poor kitten is never gonna get to sleep with grandma loving on him, grandmas got one older cat of her own (who hates people).

Menominee is our closest "big" town (10K people;) ), and while I don't know the ordinance, I DO know that the UP is largely a "live and let live" type area, aka if her cats aren't bothering anybody else, nobody else will bother her about her cats. She's probably legally "supposed" to license them (payable with her property taxes), but most people don't, honestly. They have a WONDERFUL animal shelter, who would probably be able to answer her questions. As long as her cats are clean, well fed, and not obviously diseased, animal control won't be too worried.

yooper, menominee is NOT a big town LOL. I grew up acrossed the boarder in marinette.

I don't know what you mean by "most" - do you mean a lot of cities? Because counties and small town simply do not have laws like this. In fact I've never heard of such a law because I've lived in small towns my whole life. It amazes me how different America really is. As citizens we need to remember how diverse America truely is.

HA he can kiss my yea Humane society in menominee Has NO CLUE about a cat limit law. Said it probally dosent exist

I didn't think it did, according to the ordinance. As long as she isn't running a kennel or boarding business, which she is obviously not doing!:)

nope shes just letting her kids live happy. Her youngest loves animials and was SOOO pissed that when i go on vacation (for work) that I WONT let her babysit my hamster. Then again her sister was the one who told me "ENnY If you squeeze it (a hamster) it pees"

When you hear about some really bizarre, silly, pointless law, ask yourself two questions:

1. Is there any obvious way that "they" (the law enforcement system?) could actually find out if someone was violating this rule?

and

2. If "they" found out someone was violating the rule, is there actually anything horrible "they" could do to you?

It strikes me that if there is a two cat or pet rule in this area, 1) what -- is every vet and pet store in the entire area secretly reporting clinic records or cat food sales records to law enforcement :lmao: :lmao: ??? Really?? Ya think?? and 2) what -- could a person get thrown in jail for owning three cats?? Really?? Ya think??

There certainly could be such a silly rule, but it seems pretty obvious (applying some common sense) that it is nothing to worry about.

themarquis - while I think the ordinance is silly, there are actually ordinances like that in various cities and towns. I happen to live in a small town that has such an ordinance, as does our homeowner's association (it is the same as the town ordinance).

Our ordinance states that a household may have no more than 4 pets, with no more than 3 being the same type. So, 3 dogs and one cat, or 3 cats and one dog, but not 4 cats and one dog.

And how do they know if you have the pets? According to the county, each vet must report each animal that is registered to your home when you take it in for shots, since you also have to pay for a county tag. Thus, the county knows when we are due for rabies shots, and even if your cat never goes outside, you will be fined if you do not get your rabies shot. This is also reported to the town you live in, and this is how they know how many animals you have.

I understand why the law is in place, I do believe some people do take on more than they should when it comes to caring for multiple pets, but it sure does get in the way of those of us that have the room in our homes and yards for more than 4 pets (though 4 big dogs would be stretching it!), and know how to care for our pets. We joke that our dog has more toys in her toybox than the children do! Yup, good life for pets in our home. Wish I had one more dog, though!

OP, if there is no ordinance directly addressing the number of pets, then your aunt should not have any problems. Good luck with that ex!
