Memphis area Dissers

Also check out websites for Memphis Rock and Soul Museum, and Beale Street Blues Museum.

Decent food and good music at Blues City Cafe on Beale (and they have a website)

The Residence Inn on Poplar Pike is between Germantown and Collierville, so farther away than Germantown. Walnut Grove @ Humphreys is going to put her right in the middle of that awful construction going on, on I240, ditto Primacy Parkway. I am not trying to be a downer, but those three caught my eye.

ETA: Isn't there a new hotel just off 385 at Hacks CrossRoad? I don't remember the name of it, though.

Edit again. The Marriott at Thousand Oaks has closed, and it was in a terrible part of town. Right at I-240 and Perkins, where we had already said don't stay near there.

The Hampton Inn on Peabody Place was always my go-to when we lived in Memphis. I lived on Mud Island and worked in Germantown, it can be 45 minutes at times.

If I were to do a trip to Memphis I'd go to
Memphis Zoo
Graceland (and yes, I've been at least a dozen times)
Rock and Soul Museum
Sun Studio
Stax Records
National Civil Rights Museum

Rum Boogie Cafe and Blues City Cafe on Beale are fun. Central BBQ is good for the food but I love Rendezvous for everything else.

You guys are awesome!! I will check those hotels in the morning. This was supposed to be a 3-4 day road trip up the coast to Maine, so pretty inexpensive. Now it's 6 days plus a flight plus a car rental so I'm looking for a clean, Reasonably priced hotel ( and I belong to Marriott's rewards program so I always check that chain first)

You've gotten good advice already - just wanted to second recs for:

Corky's or Central BBQ
Stax
Sun Studio
Graceland (you kind of have to go)

other favorite, fun restaurants are:
Gus' Fried Chicken
Soul Fish Cafe (in Cooper Young, a cute area)
Huey's (local burger chain)

I recommend the Holiday Inn, University of Memphis for a non-downtown location if you want something less expensive. It's part of the hospitality program and I've only had good luck there. I absolutely wouldn't stay as far away as Germantown or Southaven or outside of (or near) 240.

Google map it and you'll see.

Enjoy the trip. Memphis is a fantastic city.

Huey's is yummy!

Oops...right about the one on Poplar Pike....too far out. Also right about the Marriott on Thousand Oaks. I included the Humphreys and Primacy Parkway because their access to 240 is irrelevant to me...I am avoiding 240 at all costs right now. Easier and less stressful to just use city streets!

Yes, those of us who live here (I am in Olive Branch) know the city streets and can find ourselves a lot of alternate ways. But, I guess with a car/phone that has GPS, anybody could manage to do that; I keep forgetting, although I use it all the time.

I will also recommend the Rock and Soul Museum.

And I don't think I've seen anyone recommend visiting the Loraine Motel and also the Civil Rights Museum. Add that to your list.

Fairfield inn east/Galaria?

Ding, ding, ding....you have a winner here!

The only negative is that it is in a very busy area...but that can be a positive as well. It is next to Wolfchase Galleria Mall, and in the middle of a jillion store and restaurants, and 5 minutes from the interstate.

It is a nice hotel in a safe area.

National Civil Rights Museum just re-opened after a lengthy renovation, and is even better, and more interactive, than it was before!

Ok, VERY reasonable rates at the Hampton inn poplar. Would this be good? And the comfort inn downtown is also reasonable. Which one guys???

Okay, all of these are good, and all of these are in nice, safe areas.

Hampton Inn is right in the middle if the city, 1 minute from great Corky's BBQ, a couple of minutes from great Huey burgers, right on Poplar which is a main thoroughfare with easy access to everywhere. 15 -20 minutes from downtown (straight down Poplar heading west).

Comfort Inn downtown is close, of course, to everything downtown....Beale, river, Peabody, there's a Huey's downtown, all of the museums (rock and soul, Stax, Blues, etc), close to Rendezvous, trolleys.

All 3 are good choices...maybe check all 3 out on trip advisor??

Yup, have been looking on trip advisor & they all get good reviews. Advantage to the comfort inn, being able to get around to many things without the car (safe to be out in that area at night, like coming home from a club?). But is it "old"? If we stay further out, we always have to drive & park.

Definitely not old. Trolley stop outside on Main St. So you could leave the car parked and ride to Beale and the various museums.

Considering it is a "Blues trip", I personally would rank your 3 choices as Comfort Inn downtown first, then the Hampton, then the Fairfield Inn.

You have been an angel and so helpful. I think I will book the comfort inn. Price difference is not much & this trip is really all about DH & his love of blues. (He's been tolerating my love of Disney for years so his turn!)

I had friends who stayed there last year, and they had no complaints...and they loved the complimentary breakfast fare.

Walking or using the trolleys will definitely be handy.

I have lived in Memphis all of my 57 years. I have never been to Graceland, Stax museum, Sun Records or the Civil Rights Museum. I don't care for Beale St. or The Rendezvous"s ribs. That's why I'm in the process of moving to Florida. I'm like a fish out of water here. I'm a beach and theme park person. I don't care to stick around and see The Pyramid become the world's biggest bait shop (Bass Pro). I do like the zoo but haven't been in years. Some people love it here though so that being said hope you have a great trip!
