I haven't been to WDW since 2010 and lots have changed. For the memory maker ....from what I understand it's a $149 fee, and then the WDW photographers take our pictures with their camera and the photos will appear on my MDE app?

What is a photopass?

How much is it to download the favorite pictures onto our computer?

Do I need to have a magic band as we will be staying at the Shades of Green.

I just saw the Frozen Ever After ride picture on another thread. But how on earth does that ride know I have a magic band? Do you scan your magic band somewhere before the ride starts?

The photographer will take your picture and then scan your Memory maker card if you don't have a MagicBand. The photos will appear in your MDE account. Ride photos for some of the rides, like Tower of Tower and Buzz will appear on monitors at the ride exit. You need to tap your Memory maker card to the touch point to save it to your MDE. Other rides like Seven Dwarfs Mine ride read the RFID chips in the MBs in order to link it to the MDE account. I don't know if it will link to a Memory maker card.

Photopass is the sales department for the Memory maker photos. It is free to download your pictures. You can edit for free, too. They sell the photos for a discount.

If you have a magic band, there is a chip in it that a reader identifies at a certain point during the ride, when the photo is taken. Then, it will appear on your account. Honestly, to someone non techie like me, it seems like magic :) The photographers will also scan your band each time you have a photo taken. On the 7DMT, you get a short video of you on the ride, I'm not sure which other rides do that. My DD5 loved watching the video over & over.

PhotoPass is the photo-taking service, which is free. I don't see how you think they sell the photos for a discount though - they cost $15 a piece.

Tower of terror uses a video too. Buzz light year in MK also but not really a video....animated of still photo.

wow --- today's technology is just amazing!!! I think I will go ahead and purchase the magic bands.

so free to download onto your computer but $15 if you want a film paper picture?

If you buy Memory Maker, yes, it's free to download all your pictures. If you don't buy Memory Maker, it's $15 per actual picture or download. If you buy Memory Maker, there's no reason to buy the pictures from Disney - just print them out yourself or take them to Target or Walmart (or any other store that has a picture printing service) or use a service like Shutterfly.

They only cost $15 each if you don't have Memory Maker. They cost less than $2 each if you do have it. That is what I meant by a discount. :)

You would have to get at least 75 pictures for it to cost less than $2 each, although that's certainly not hard to do, especially once you start editing and getting multiple versions of the same picture.

Kind of strange question - but will the photographers be out and about when it's raining?

You don't need a magic band for photo pass or memory maker.

The tickets you get at Shades of Green do the same thing as a magic band. You use either your ticket or your magic band to get through the park gates, when using fast passes, or to link your photo to you. Since you're not staying at a Disney hotel, you can't use either to buy merchandise in the parks or as a room key.

The only advantage to the magic band is the ease of use. it's right on your wrist. You don't need to dug around in your pocket or bag to find it. I stay at Shades of Green. I didn't buy a magic band when I visited the first year they came out. I used my ticket. But since I go frequently I now have an annual pass which comes with a free magic band and memory maker.

One a somewhat related note...

Does anyone know the resolution (image size) of the pictures that you can download? I tried to do a search and didn't find anything.

If you buy the memory maker. you can download you photos you want and then print at home or send to Walgreens or Sams to print them. You receive a letter that gives you the rights to print the photos.
