Mediterranean Excursion Advice

We have done all ports on our own. In Naples, we took the hydrofoil to Capri then took it back to Sorrento after lunch. We then hopped on the train to Pompeii, spent the afternoon there, and made our way back to Naples and straight to the ship. It was a very busy day and we were told before our trip that we couldn't do it, but we did and with three young kids in tow. Capri is one of my favorite places in the world, so I highly recommend going there. The ship docked right by the hydrofoil, so it was super simple to find it and get on it. Have fun!

We have this book for our upcoming Med cruise, and it's awesome. We have a day in Naples, but will be touring Pompeii earlier in our trip, so plan to use his walking tour to go to the Archaeological Museum and back, see some of Naples, and hopefully take some pictures.

As for crime in Naples, it sounds like it's really no worse for tourists than any other area - pickpockets and purse-snatching. For more information, here's the State Department's page on the city: https://www.osac.gov/pages/ContentReportDetails.aspx?cid=21543

Great resources, thanks!

Taking the hydrofoil to Capri sounds awesome! What did you do in Capri?

Capri is an easy place to just go walk around. If you take the hydrofoil, you'll land at Marina Grande. You'll want to find your way to the funicular and up to the main area of the city. There is a picture-perfect square with small streets that branch out from here. I suggest going to Carthusia and buying some perfume first then finding a fun spot for lunch. My husband and I spent part of our honeymoon on Capri and at the time did the Blue Grotto. It's fun, too, but we didn't do this when we were on the cruise because our kids were pretty young at the time. I am entertaining the idea of staying in Sorrento a few days before our cruise next summer and will absolutely do the Blue Grotto with them then. Here is a link to my trip report from our day in Naples, which may be helpful for you: http://thefairygodblogger.blogspot.com/2011/07/day-8-10-year-old-promise-fulfilled.html?q=capri

Just be aware that there is no such thing as lines in Capri. It's crowd and jump on. I had wanted to love Capri when I went there on an "on your own" excursion (I just purchased the boat trip there and back to the ship), but it ended up being overcrowded, hot, and honestly the worst day of my trip.
