Sorry if this has been asked by any-one before, but for the life in me I just can't remember what we have done previously and don't want to get it wrong :)

My partner is diabetic and has to inject 2 types of insulin every day. As were are going for 4 weeks we have a pile of meds for him and have got the letter from the docs to confirm what he is on.

The day time insulin is in little viles which are popped into a pen and he has to inject this every time he eats.

Where are we allowed to put his meds (there will also be needles). I know he can carry some on board, but does any-one know how much?

I'm just thinking if our luggage doesn't meet us straight away I don't want him to run out so would ideally like to take a few viles in hand luggage.

You shouldn't check it. The cold temperatures in the hold aren't suitable for insulin. You can take it all on board as hand luggage with a letter from your doctor. Allow plenty of time for security!

I also travel with a fair amount preloaded serynges (heparin). Basically what security asked was "I assume you have the prescription ?" and when I answer "yes", they just don't even check ...

Insulin for diabetics litteraly mean life or death and would be a pain to get replaced, so that's not something you want to put in the hold.

As long as you have a medical prescription and a letter from your doc, there should not be any question

as PP mentionned, allow more time for security at your origin airport, and don't chance a tight connection in the US if you fly indirect.

My son is on 7 types of medication and we get a letter from the hospital noting all medication and why is has to be in hold. Virgin let us carry extra hand luggage with it all in. All the times we have been never been asked apart from our last trip in May, they went through it all, took a good 30 minutes, testing it all and making sure they were all correctly labelled etc x

Thankyou. I was just worried that if we took everything in hand luggage and they said we couldnt carry so much liquid on board we would be stuck.

was panicking thinking they may not believe us and wonder why there is so much and i dont think it helped that the letter from the doctor looks like it could have been done on any pc :/

Makes sense to take in hand luggage.

Thank-you

Take his repeat prescription chit, that should suffice. Don't put any of it in the your case for the hold though as it can get frozen in there.

Make sure and take your prescription with you as if anything did happen to your insulin it is much easier to get more if you have it with you (that goes for all drugs). We also use the frio traveling and for days out to keep our insulin cool enough.

My daily injection meds are supplied by Bupa Homecare and they provide a small cool bag with ice blocks, needles and travel container for used needles along with a letter explaining that the meds need to be in carry on and why.

Going through security I put the cool bag in the tray with the letter on top but was not questioned nor were they looked at in UK or USA security.

I had read that Disney resorts will provide a container for used needles so I asked at check-in and one was delivered to the room within five minutes, one less thing to pack.

As my meds need to be kept chilled for the journey home I gave bell services the ice packs two days before heading home to put in their freezer then on vacating the room got the ice packs and bell services put the cool bag with meds into their fridge until we left for the airport.
