Its bad enough when your child is sick at home, but when you are away, the stress level is over the top. I thought this post might be useful for those cruisers with chiildren...
No sooner had we began our decent into MCO, did my DD6 hold her hands over her ears and started crying in pain. Between sobs she managed to tell me that both of her ears had "cracked and burned". So our first question when we boarded the ship (Disney Magic 11/23, more on that in another post) was "can we see the doctor?". We were told that the medical facility would be open as soon as the lifeboat drill was over. So there we were in our lifejackets on deck with DD6 crying all the way through the drill. The CMs and the other families were really understanding when they found out why she was so upset. DD6 and I then headed for the medical facility while DH and DD10 returned all the lifejackets to our room. Due to virus on the 11/16 sailing, Disney had re-routed the way to the facility. So DD6 and I followed the hand drawn arrows through what seemed like unfinished dimly lit hallways to the back entrance of the facility. We were greeted there by 2 nurses who immediately went over to my DD and asked her what was wrong. One picked her up and held her while the other helped me fill out some preliminary paperwork. The waiting area was about 8 x 10 and consisted of a childrens size table and chairs in the middle with adult size chairs surrounding it. I was asked then if I wanted to see an "Medical Doctor" or a "Registered Nurse" and was explained the difference. I opted for the doctor and we were shown into an examining room. There a nurse took DD6s temp, pulse and heartrate and asked lots of allergy and medical background questions all while DD sat on my lap. She then explained it would be a short wait because someone had just fallen midship and the doctor was on the scene. She left us briefly and returned with a "bravery pin" for DD. I was then told it would be about another 20 minutes until the doctor would be able to see us. About 10 minutes later Doctor Willie came in (I forget what country he is from) and examined her. He said she had an inner ear infection in each ear, and couldn't blame her for crying because her ears were so inflamed they were purple inside. He gave me 2 options of treatments, explaining each of them in detail. Once that was decided, he left and in about 10 minutes returned with everything I needed for the next five days (including a conversion table because everything was in mls, not teaspoons). He said to bring DD back in three days to have her ears checked again. I thanked him and we were on our way. DH and DD10 were waiting for us in the waiting room talking about the great sail away party they had just been to. All in all I would say we spent about 45 minutes total in the medical facility. Everything was billed to our stateroom and we received an itemized receipt later that evening under our door.
Sorry this post was so long, but I thought it was important for everyone to know that your childen are in good hands with Doctor Willie and the medical facility on the Magic.
