Its bad enough when your child is sick at home, but when you are away, the stress level is over the top. I thought this post might be useful for those cruisers with chiildren...

No sooner had we began our decent into MCO, did my DD6 hold her hands over her ears and started crying in pain. Between sobs she managed to tell me that both of her ears had "cracked and burned". So our first question when we boarded the ship (Disney Magic 11/23, more on that in another post) was "can we see the doctor?". We were told that the medical facility would be open as soon as the lifeboat drill was over. So there we were in our lifejackets on deck with DD6 crying all the way through the drill. The CMs and the other families were really understanding when they found out why she was so upset. DD6 and I then headed for the medical facility while DH and DD10 returned all the lifejackets to our room. Due to virus on the 11/16 sailing, Disney had re-routed the way to the facility. So DD6 and I followed the hand drawn arrows through what seemed like unfinished dimly lit hallways to the back entrance of the facility. We were greeted there by 2 nurses who immediately went over to my DD and asked her what was wrong. One picked her up and held her while the other helped me fill out some preliminary paperwork. The waiting area was about 8 x 10 and consisted of a childrens size table and chairs in the middle with adult size chairs surrounding it. I was asked then if I wanted to see an "Medical Doctor" or a "Registered Nurse" and was explained the difference. I opted for the doctor and we were shown into an examining room. There a nurse took DD6s temp, pulse and heartrate and asked lots of allergy and medical background questions all while DD sat on my lap. She then explained it would be a short wait because someone had just fallen midship and the doctor was on the scene. She left us briefly and returned with a "bravery pin" for DD. I was then told it would be about another 20 minutes until the doctor would be able to see us. About 10 minutes later Doctor Willie came in (I forget what country he is from) and examined her. He said she had an inner ear infection in each ear, and couldn't blame her for crying because her ears were so inflamed they were purple inside. He gave me 2 options of treatments, explaining each of them in detail. Once that was decided, he left and in about 10 minutes returned with everything I needed for the next five days (including a conversion table because everything was in mls, not teaspoons). He said to bring DD back in three days to have her ears checked again. I thanked him and we were on our way. DH and DD10 were waiting for us in the waiting room talking about the great sail away party they had just been to. All in all I would say we spent about 45 minutes total in the medical facility. Everything was billed to our stateroom and we received an itemized receipt later that evening under our door.

Sorry this post was so long, but I thought it was important for everyone to know that your childen are in good hands with Doctor Willie and the medical facility on the Magic.

Hi Deb,

Thanks for posting that. It is wonderful as another mom to know that my kids will be in good hands if something happens so far away from their trusted pediatrician. It must have been horrible to see your daughter in such pain and a relief to have her cared for so quickly and so well.

BTW, I have a son with very, very sensitive ears. I don't know if your DD's are sensitive when she is not suffering from ear infections, but if they are I have found childrens "earplanes" to be a great help.

Hi Deb!

I've experienced the medical facility firsthand on TWO different sailings (for me, not my daughter, thankfully) and was very impressed both times with the quality of service and the follow-up care. The staff called me in my stateroom just to be sure the antibiotics and other medications were working, which was unexpected but welcomed.

I have seen the pediatric facilities and thought they were perfectly Disney. :) I'm glad they took good care of you and your daughter and I hope that she was able to enjoy the cruise after her medications started to work. :)

Oh Deb! I hope your DD had a good cruise once the antibiotics kicked in. The poor thing - what a bad way to start your trip!

I can't believe we did not meet on board. I never met disneydarwin either.

Hope you & your family had a Magical time.

Wow!! That's great to know.

I'm so sorry that your dd started her trip off with an ear infection, but glad to hear you were treated appropriately.

We also found the ships Doctor to be wonderful on our 2/02 cruise. I fogot to pack my DS12 inhaler, as he hadn't needed it in over a year. He developed an awful cough while on board. The doctor provided us with an inhaler and cough medicine for the duration of the trip. He even called the next day to see if he was feeling better. I was impressed.

On our next cruise 2/15/03, the inhaler and cough syrup will be packed!

Just my 2 cents.

DD had to visit the medical facility 4 days into our cruise. They were absolutely the best! Dr. Van Neitert was very kind and thorough. He had DD's complete trust and had our complete gratitude. DD had scarlet fever and possible rheumatic fever. All necessary precautions were followed and we never got the impression that she got anything less than excellent care. (Something to be said for paying out of pocket and not dealing with PCP'c, PPO's, HMO's and the like.) One awkward thing was, when we called the facility (numerous Times) we were given the impression that they really didn't want to be bothered. In hind sight, Maybe it was just my misread, because we certainly didn't feel that way upon arrival. Great job MAGIC Docs and staff!

Just curious...did you have to pay for the visit? If so, how much was it?

Thanks for the information. As a really paranoid Mom - it's nice to know that they have great medical facilities! :teeth:

kpgclark,

Yes we did pay out of pocket, $275 I bellieve. Well worth it for the piece of mind. Also many labs and medications were included in this fee. I think the "Just to see you" fee was $75. The charge was added to the room, and they gave us an itemized bill and it was EVENTUALLY covered in full by ins. Also, the company who handles the medical facility (NOT Disney, they contract this out) was extremely helpful getting my ins. to cover. Hope this helps.

Smiles!

You forgot to add it was an AFTER hours visit. DD came down with a high fever at 10:00pm or so. The costs included culture to determine type of infection, an EKG (fear or Rheumatic Fever) and meds.

GBG (tlgoblues BETTER half!)

Just curious if anyone knows.....

Some cruise lines offer Doc's free cruises for their services (and they get to bring their family).

Some cruise lines use locum tennums docs (rental docs from agencies).

Some (not many) hire their own.

Anyone know what Disney does?

I'm not 100 percent certain, but I think that the doctors and nurses on Disney are from an outside firm that is "hired" by Disney, as I recall seeing the name of the firm/agency on our bill. I used the medical facilities after hours after my kneecap popped off while dancing at the 70's party over a year ago, and they were great. They were very prompt, even though it was quite late, and when I got home, my ortho doc said they did a very good job with the "closed reduction." It cost around $700, which was fully reimbursed by our HMO.

Ouch that has got to hurt.:eek:What were you dancing to B52's Rock Lobster?;)

On our cruise last year, one of our tablemates was a traveling cardiac nurse. Out of curiosity she checked out the medical facility and reported back that it was the standard company who supplies medical care for the cruise lines (i can't remember the name). It's sort of like the way the spa is run, contracted out to a company that does spa services on cruise ships (steiner in that case).

I must be on a 70's music kick right now. I downloaded some Bee Gee's this morning. Now I'm going to have to download some Anita Ward!
