Last year I had reconstructive surgery and my plastic surgeon told me not to waste my money on Mederma or other scar healing lotions. He said what really makes the scar fade faster is the rubbing, not the expensive lotions. He said Mederma seems to work, because people are rubbing, not because of something special in Mederma.
So as long as you are rubbing, it doesn't matter what you use. He said I could use any lotion or even plain old petroleum jelly (just to make it smoother to rub). Technically you don't need to use anything, just rub. Rubbing he said makes the blood flow to the area increase and healing faster. This even works on old scars he said. So I used regular lotion and it seems to have worked just fine.
