Does anyone know of anywhere I can get coupons for Mederma, it is so expensive. DD11 just got 14 stitches taken out of her knee and I want to minamalize the scar.

It is expensive, and I don't have any cupons, but i just wanted to say that from personal experience it is totally worth the expense!! It made a real difference in the scar on my leg (six stitches)

Did you have to use it for the full 8 weeks it says on the package? I am going to buy it tomorrow whether I can find a coupon or not. Thank you for the info

How long after you got the stitches out did you start using it?

I have tons of coupons and samples; CALL your peds. office and see if they have any samples. All the samples have coupons with them. I'd be happy to mail you some but I'm leaving in about an hour and I'd be mailing from WA state...don't know where you are or how long it would take to get there. PM me if your peds office doesn't have it.

Try the Walgreen's or CVS brand. I had both knees replaced and spent a good deal of time in physical therapy and this was a huge topic of discussion. The scaring never bothered me too much so I wasn't as dedicated as many of the other people, but the people that were really dedicated to applying it, found that the store brands worked just as well as the mederma. One lady had only used the Walgreen's brand and you really had to look to even find the scar on her knee.

Not trying to hijack the thread, but is there a certain time frame that the Mederma or walgreen brand needs to be applied?

I have several surgical scars on my shoulder when I had to have a prosthetic put in and then taken out for infection and then a new one put back in. The last surgery was around a year ago and the scar seems to be getting wider. Vitamin E isn't working.

There are generic/store brands of this that are MUCH cheaper. And it does work! If it is an older scar, you have to use for a longer period though.

My OB/GYN suggested using the Target brand, said it would work just as good as the real stuff. It worked well for me.

Last year I had reconstructive surgery and my plastic surgeon told me not to waste my money on Mederma or other scar healing lotions. He said what really makes the scar fade faster is the rubbing, not the expensive lotions. He said Mederma seems to work, because people are rubbing, not because of something special in Mederma.

So as long as you are rubbing, it doesn't matter what you use. He said I could use any lotion or even plain old petroleum jelly (just to make it smoother to rub). Technically you don't need to use anything, just rub. Rubbing he said makes the blood flow to the area increase and healing faster. This even works on old scars he said. So I used regular lotion and it seems to have worked just fine.

Thank you everyone for your fast responses, I am going to go tomorrow and look for the store brands and see what I can find.

Agree with Sameyeam -- my daughter had stitches over her eye and hospital said to follow up with Mederma but when I went to a dermatogist appointment with my little one, I asked her opinion. Was told that Vaseline (petroleum jelly) works better and is cheaper b/c its just there to keep the skin moist and rubbing helps.

My doctor told me the exact same thing and it is true!
3 years ago I had skin cancer on my nose and had Mohs surgery to remove it. It turned out to be much larger than expected and the incision was NASTY and HUGE. I don't know how many stitches I had but lets just say the wound started on the bottom of my left nostril and snake up the front of my nose to slightly below the top of my nose. I was really, really worried about a hideous scar. The doctor told me not to waste my money on Mederma or similar products. He said to just spend $1 on a small container of petroleum jelly (aka vaseline) and 3 times a day take a tiny amount and rub the area firmly but not too hard (it shouldn't cause pain) for 5 minutes each time. I had to do this for 3 weeks. The doctor said it was the pressure that would prevent the skin from lumping up and forming a scar. He said the petroleum jelly was just used to make it easier for your finger to glide over the area. It worked! Unless you look really super close you would never even notice anything wrong with my nose. I was shocked that it worked because it could have been horrible looking.

To minimize a scar, try Vitamin E oil.

Its in the vitamin aisle, and while a little more than vaseline, its really helped us with our various scars.

I used vitamin E oil for about 6months, several times a day. It worked wonders for 4 of my one inch scars on my shoulder. They're noticable but not ghastly. However on my 7in incision it didn't do a thing. The thing is VERY noticable. My doctor went through the same incision site 3 times though. Maybe that's the difference.

Oh be careful about staining clothing with any type of oils though. I had to soak my clothes in vinegar to get the oil marks out.

I've always been told by a family member who's a plastic surgeon that no topical creams are necessary for healing. The body heals itself and that creams are money wasters. I even asked about vitamin e-cream and was told ANY product for helping the skin heal and reduce scarring is money thrown out.
