meat in a tube

I can't buy the meat in the tubes either - but my DH did buy this meat in a tube when we went shopping at the Commissary. I will not eat it!

I buy all my meat at Costco - but I did notice in Costco the other day they had ground beef in a see thru tube that was frozen. I think there were 4 tubes in a bag. I still couldn't buy that.

I've never heard of meat in a tube. I usually buy ground beef in bulk when it is on sale, and freeze it. Right now I must have at least 5 pounds frozen.

lol I saw this for the first time when visiting some of DH's family in WVa...I couldn't believe they sold meat that way and since then I've seen it in my local Kroger...and I will never ever ever buy it! It just seems wrong on so many levels!:sad2:

ok, i buy the ground chuck in a tube at kroger, i have the meat dept. to slice it into hamburger patties for me. saves me time and trouble from having to patty it out myself, great when i am having family over for a cookout. have bought the ground beef from there, it was to fat, but the ground chuck is just as good as the fresh ground stuff.

I too had a phobia about meat in a tube..my eyes just kinda glazed over it in the meat department. Like the OP said, maybe its because my mom never bought it.

Anyway, I did buy it once, and I will never do it again. For me, it was the texture I couldn't handle. Not like real fresh ground beef.

Now, I do by frozen chicken breast or tenderloins. They are so easy to throw in a skillet and they cook so quickly.

Wow...I buy it all the time! I only buy the one with the least fat. I love it, it tastes good, and lasts longer in the fridge than the fresh packaged stuff. It's still regular beef. Nothings different about it that I noticed. I buy it at Staters.

Ewwww. :snooty: I can't do it either. Meat in a tube totally grosses me out also. We first saw it several years ago while on vacation in New Mexico. Now it's pretty much all our grocery stores carry. I can't do it. I now buy all beef at a local butcher shop where they know exactly where the meat is coming from. It is slightly more expensive, but I really don't care! Am I am really tight with money!

hmmmm...i always heard the "tubes" referred to as "ground beef chubs". anyway, even if they are on sale, i buy the fresh ground lowest-fat store brand. higher fat percentage is just a waste of money - it all cooks away. and yeah, you do see those unappealling chunks of fat and other, even less appealing stuff in the high fat type. less chance of a recall, too.

Yes, around here at least, the "tube meat" is much higher in fat than what I buy out of the fresh meat case. I tend to buy 93/7 lean ground beef unless I am making burgers on the grill and then I buy something like 85/15.
The tube stuff is more like 75/25!

I think the white stuff is fat granules. I have bought it a few times for spaghetti, but stopped because it's nasty and doesn't brown well. Most ground beef/sirloin breaks up when you brown it..this stuff you have to claw at it with a fork to break it apart while you are cooking it..ugh.

Now, I hate to do this too.. but...I just buy a ton of it when it goes on sale. Walmart sells it cheaper in 5 lb increments, so I do that and split it up myself. Not the tube stuff, but the regular stuff.

At our Sam's the meat in a tube is ground chuck that is ground fresh daily at the store. We buy it all the time and it is the same as any other meat.

This cracks me up. My mom never bought the tube meat either, so neither did I. Then, budget consciousness got the best of me and I tried it when it was on sale. Here in Michigan at Kroger's they have 3 levels: round, chuck, and sirloin. I always buy the sirloin and it is just fine. It's never been brown when I opened it, and has always been fresh. (Fortunately, your nose will tell you when ground beef isn't fresh!). I use it all the time now. I like how easily it fits in the freezer :) , and it's always a perfect pound, which many recipes call for. So many of the stores near us started packaging their ground beef as more than a pound, like 1.4 pounds or 1.6 pounds. It's annoying. Not enough to split into 2 pounds and freeze, but too much for a one-pound recipe. The only difference I notice from the styrofoam packaged ground beef is that the tubed beef seems to be ground coarser.

I buy the ground beef in tubes from Costco -- Kirkland brand, with clear covering and 91/9, no additives. It's always tasted exactly like the ground I get at the butcher department :confused3 In fact, maybe he was lying, but the meat guy said it's the same stuff they serve raw in their meat department. But then, I've always had really good luck with Kirkland frozen brands -- their uncooked, tail-on shrimp is great (well, not better than fresh, but you can't even find that in the gourmet/natural stores around here...it's all previously frozen).

The Butcher was telling you the truth. The meat departments get the burger in great big tubes and just put them through the grinder before putting it on the shelf. Our local store used to carry irradited burger in the chubs. It did not have to be cooked to the normal 160 degrees. I never really cared for it.

I also buy the tubes all the time and have never had any problems. And it is good. I get mine from a local meat packing plant so it's always fresh and is even cheaper than the stores. They are 5lbs. each and I pay @$6.50 each. I usually buy 20-25 lbs at a time. I do alot of bulk cooking. So, I have used it for meatloaf, meatballs, tacos, pasta sauce. Because of the way it's packed, I find it will last longer in the fridge before you cook it. I don't think I could go back to buying smaller packs of ground beef at the store.

We eat deer............don't have to worry about recalls..........you can kill and process it yourself............very cheap and safe.

sorry Bambi
:scared1:

We used to eat that meat in a tube 20 years ago...
I think the quality has gone down in recent years...
:goodvibes
