Measles contracted at DLR????

Vaccines work. It is obvious when diseases like polio and small pox have been almost eradicated. It really angers me when people choose not to get vaccinated. You are putting my child at risk because she is too young to get vaccinated. You are putting my friend's child who can't get vaccinated because of health reasons at risk. We are getting close to losing herd immunity because of people's choices. While I couldn't care less about most choices parents make, this one affects my child and her health.

So the only ones without an excuse about not getting vaccinated would be the two infants. And they probably wouldn't have caught it had the rest of the group who caught it been vaccinated. There is no conspiracy theory. There is no plan to control our minds through injections. They are there for our health. And when you don't get them, you put all of our health at risk.

You are completely ignoring the fact that there are some people who are medically advised NOT to receive certain vaccines - so yes, they do have an "excuse".

Also, none of us will probably ever know whether or not the "rest of the group who caught it" was vaccinated or not. It's private medical information. But most people ARE vaccinated, so the assumption that every last one of these people wasn't is probably premature at best.

And if you read the previously posted study, you'd understand that, at least according to highly skilled, highly educated researchers who do this for a living, there is scientific evidence that it's not necessarily the unvaccinated who are spreading it.

No conspiracy theory - just facts. Propaganda on either side of the issue doesn't keep anyone safer. Just sayin'.

Actually, there are two main points in that study that you are overlooking.
One, that study is only for pertussis. They are still actively saying you should get vaccinated, just more research needs to go into that particular vaccination. No correlation has been demonstrated for MMR.
Two, the key word is "newly vaccinated". Their thought is that newly vaccinated people may spread it to infants who are unable to get vaccinated yet. They are saying if you are newly vaccinated, there's a very small likelihood that you may spread it to infants. However, you won't spread it to already vaccinated people, and after some time, you won't spread it at all.

Not to mention I'd wait for further research and I'll have to re-read the actual paper instead of some guy's blog. For things to be concrete, we need multiple peer-reviewed studies and on more subjects than baboons.

I'll probably get flamed for this, but people who don't vaccinate their kids for "constitutional reasons" are idiots and I question their competency as parents. Don't put your kids and other kids at danger for your own idiotic beliefs (Not aimed at you MM by the way since I know you're having no say in this and are just peacefully arguing both sides).

:scared: Yikes! I was certain that was a link re: measles. I seriously goofed up!

Thanks for bringing the mistake to my attention. Here I was trying to spread valuable info and I ended up addressing the wrong disease entirely. Sheesh.

I really did read a study on measles! LOL! Evidently, that just wasn't it. :crazy2:

Some who choose not to vaccinate may very well *be* idiots - some of them probably aren't. There's really no way for us to know beyond the individuals we know personally.

I feel badly for newborns and babies with undeveloped immune systems who are taken to places like Disneyland where they are exposed to EVERYTHING.

Sure hope everyone involved in this outbreak is on the mend soon. My older siblings ALL had measles and said it was no big deal for them. I'm sure the experience varies from person to person.

I was just watching the news and there have been 17 confirmed cases to measles linked to the theme parks. The CDC is working to try and contact people but it's gonna take time. If you aren't feeling well and u weren't vaccinated u might want to get looked at. Sorry I don't know how to post links for Internet articles but I thought I'd pass on the info so u could research.

There is one in our small city that is said to have gotten Measles while at Disneyland too. I don't see it documented though.

Just pure speculation on my part..... but from the several school teachers in my family, most of whom are in Orange County schools, when there is an outbreak of measles in their schools it is usually from children who come from countries outside the U.S. where immunization shots are not as common, not from people who have refused immunizations.

Measles may not have been that big of a deal in the 1960's U.S. because we had means to deal with the disease. As recently as 1980 measles killed over 4 million people globally. Through efforts to vaccinate that number dropped to less than 60,000 worldwide in 2014. It is still a dangerous disease.

Is there a reason they don't get vaccinated once they get here?

Schools really should require it. (My son isn't old enough for school yet so I don't know what requirements there are.)

I know our school system does, if you are not vaccinated or have a really really good reason why you are not, then you are not allowed to enroll

In CA (not sure about other states) you have to show documentation of vax, OR you have to sign that vaccinations are against your personal beliefs. THIS is the opening for kids to go to school without vaccines.

Measles deaths happen almost exclusively in 3rd world countries. Even when there are "outbreaks" here death is very, very rare. Simply put, good healthcare, nutrition, sanitation, etc increases good outcomes. I would not be scared at all of having measles in the USA. Treat with megadoses of vitamin A and seek medical help if complications arise. In Africa, malnourished, no healthcare, no clean water, totally different outcome.

I had measles in 1967. It was horrible. I would not want my children to have to go through that. I remember my school halted school for 2 weeks because so many kids had it.

In CA, children must have proof of vaccinations to attend school, unless their parents sign a form stating it is against their beliefs. So, even a child coming from other countries would have to have vaccines or the waiver.

Interesting thing I have noticed in our area, schools in poorer areas have a higher vaccination rate than the more well off schools. And of course the private schools have as low as 50% vaccination rates.

Yeah, even if people don't typically die from it...I certainly wouldn't want to catch it. And I really, REALLY wouldn't want my son it catch it either.

I think there is a very large likelihood that the outbreak started with someone coming to the parks from outside of the US. Vaccinations are not so common or required in other countries, and Disneyland is most definitely an international attraction.

Having said that, if you are vaccinated, it "shouldn't" be a problem. I do worry about the younger infants who have not yet been vaccinated.

I was just at the parks on Friday and I was not worried or scared to be there whatsoever.

It is actually easier to get a kid in school with a vax waiver than fully vaccinated. When I enrolled my daughter in school, I only had her partial vax record because the other got misplaced. And we only had 2 days to get them in school. They refused to allow her to go to school with a partial record, so I asked for a waiver. They pulled it out from behind the desk, I signed it, and BOOM she's in school. I had my other kids full vax records, and they went through them with a fine toothed comb with me double checking dates and signatures and so on. It took forever. But the waiver? Super simple. That's an issue, IMO.

There are tons of people who don't and use waivers. I used a waiver this year for my 6th grader he needed one shot but I couldn't get an apt so I signed a religious form and waited a month. It was just that easy. To my knowledge about 10 percent of kids don't do vaccinations
